One hundred patients, 35 with spinal cord injury (SCI) and 65 who were ambulatory, underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). Success of complete stone excision, operative morbidity and mortality were compared in the two patient populations. Stone size and complexity were evaluated by X-ray and a single-stage PNL was done using general anesthesia, bi-planar C-arm fluoroscopy, Amplatz renofascial dilators, and two guide wires. Eleven percent of the patients had previously-placed percutaneous nephrostomy tubes for hydronephrosis and/or pyonephrosis. In the ambulatory group, 98.5% (64/65) were

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a standard surgical procedure for kidney stone removal. Totally tubeless PCNL is a variation in technique in which neither an indwelling ureteric stent nor a nephrostomy tube is placed postoperatively. This meta-analysis compares the efficacy and safety of totally tubeless PCNL with standard PCNL.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and clinicaltrials.gov databases were searched until January 2025. The primary outcomes were stone-free rate, operative time and hospital stay while secondary outcomes were hemoglobin (Hb) drop, total compl

Introduction: Intrarenal pressure (IRP) generated during percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) may have the potential to cause renal damage and/or sepsis. It has been suggested that mini-PCNL (mPCNL) can further increase IRP but that a suctioning sheath may mitigate this elevation. We sought to measure IRP throughout the PCNL process, randomizing patients getting mPCNL to receiving two different mPCNL sheaths, one suctioning and the other nonsuctioning, and then comparing them with patients undergoing standard PCNL (sPCNL) using a 24F sheath. Patients and Methods: Twenty patients meeting the eli

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common postoperative complications of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL). Besides the significant threat to the patient's life, they represent a surgical, financial, and stressful burden to the healthcare systems. Duration of the procedure, bacterial load in urine, severity of obstruction, and presence of infected stone directly increase the incidence of UTI.
AIM: To identify the perioperative predictors of postoperative UTIs in patients undergoing PNL in Assiut University Urology Hospital, Assiut, Egypt.
METHODS: A prospective study w

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the safety and effectiveness of one-stage percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for the treatment of calculous pyonephrosis have been proven. In order to further reduce postoperative pain and hospital stay, we first proposed and practiced the idea of one-stage tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy for calculous pyonephrosis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed of case data of 30 patients with asymptomatic calculous pyonephrosis treated in our center with one-stage PCNL from January 2016 to January 2021. Patients were routinely given 20 mg of furosemide a

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has become the gold standard for the treatment of large kidney stones > 2 cm and stones in the lower calyces > 1.5 cm. Despite the miniaturization of instruments and the greater expertise of urologists, serious complications can still occur. One of the most dangerous complications is intestinal perforation. Current database analyses report colonic injury in 0.3-0.8% of all cases. These injuries can be treated with either conservative management with long-term drainage and parenteral nutrition, or an exploratory laparotomy with primary closure or creation of

A 35-year-old female patient presented with swelling pain at left waist for 1 month. Left renal pelvis stones were found and standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy was successfully performed. Two weeks later, the patient suddenly suffered massive bleeding presented with gross hematuria. Rupture of ectopic renal artery pseudoaneurysm was identified by computed tomography and angiography of the renal artery. Emergency selective angioembolization of one branch of the artery was performed. To our knowledge, this is the first report of ruptured ectopic renal arterial pseudoaneurysm.

INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the treatment of choice for large, extracorporeal lithotripsy failure stones and those in the inferior calyx. Despite the development of new techniques and the increasing experience in recent decades, complications may still occur. Colonic perforation is one of the most dangerous and rare complications of PCNL, which may lead to peritonitis and sepsis. We present our 18-year experience on the diagnosis and management of colonic perforation during PCNL.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 5260 PCNL procedures performed between M

OBJECTIVES: Percutaneos nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the gold standard for treatment of urinary stones larger than 2 cm and refractory to ESWL. Nowadays most debate about surgical technique is related to the positioning of patients. We report our expe- rience on prone PCNL with split-leg variant (SL-PCNL) MATERIALS AND METHODS: 30 consecutive patients underwent prone SL-PCNL. Preoperative stone size was deter- mined by measuring stones longest diameter on CT scan. In cases with multiple stones, stone size was determined by the sum of each stone diameter on CT scan. Patients evaluated con- sisted
