Olfactory neuroblastoma in a goat.

Nasal tumours are uncommon in goats, with lymphoma, enzootic intranasal tumours and polyps being the most commonly reported. Nasal neuroectodermal tumours are rarely described and olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB), an infrequent neuroepithelial neoplasm originating from the cribriform plate, is poorly documented in this species. Herein we report the clinical presentation and necropsy findings of an 8-year-old goat with a confirmed diagnosis of ONB. The goat was presented in respiratory distress following a history of chronic respiratory noise and an intranasal, right-side infiltrative mass was det…

Primary Neuroblastoma of the Thymus.

Primary neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor in children and may occur anywhere along the sympathetic chain, but most commonly occur in abdominal/retroperitoneal region including the adrenal glands, followed by the thorax. In children, the most primary neuroblastomas in the thorax are in the posterior mediastinum. We present herein an extremely rare case of primary neuroblastoma of thymus in pediatric patient.

Solitary Neuroblastoma in the Scapula.

Majority of primary pediatric neuroblastomas occur in the abdomen, followed by posterior mediastinum. A 7-year-old girl presented worsening pain in the left shoulder, and a CT image of the chest revealed osseous destruction in the left scapula, suggestive of bone tumor. A biopsy was performed. Pathological result was consistent with neuroblastoma. A 123I scan with SPECT/CT images was performed, which showed only increased activity in the left scapula without any other foci of abnormal activity elsewhere.

Neuroblastoma of the Iris in Children.

Neuroblastoma of the iris is an extremely rare clinical entity. An otherwise healthy 2-month-old male infant presented to the oncology clinic with a nodular whitish iris lesion in his right eye. The excisional tumor biopsy was consistent with a pathological diagnosis of neuroblastoma with differentiation and negative MYCN gene mutation. Further systemic evaluation revealed a right adrenal mass with no metastatic lesion. The biopsy of the adrenal lesion was also consistent with neuroblastoma. After four courses of chemotherapy, the adrenal mass was completely resected. The patient underwent two…

Immunology and immunotherapy of neuroblastoma.

PurposeThis review demonstrates the importance of immunobiology and immunotherapy research for understanding and treating neuroblastoma.Principal resultsThe first suggestions of immune system-neuroblastoma interactions came from in vitro experiments showing that lymphocytes from patients were cytotoxic for their own tumor cells and from evaluations of tumors from patients that showed infiltrations of immune system cells. With the development of monoclonal antibody (mAb) technology, a number of mAbs were generated against neuroblastoma cells lines and were used to define tumor associated antige…

Olfactory neuroblastoma in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 12.5-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was presented for evaluation of dyspnea. Physical examination suggested upper airway disease. Computed tomography revealed the presence of a nasopharyngeal mass. Biopsies obtained via rhinoscopy led to a diagnosis of olfactory neuroblastoma. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Olfactory neuroblastoma (or esthesioneuroblastoma) is a rare malignant neoplasm that arises from olfactory neuroepithelium. It was first described in human medicine in 1924. Clinical signs are variable, and diagnosis may prove challenging as this tumor, which is a dif…

The laparoscopic approach of neuroblastoma.

Neuroblastoma is one of the most common solid tumors, and the biopsy and excision of this tumor are often required as part of a planned multimodal treatment. In 1995, Holcomb and coworkers first reported endosurgical procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric malignancies; however, the usefulness of laparoscopic procedures for abdominal neuroblastoma is still unclear. Twenty-five laparoscopic biopsies for advanced abdominal neuroblastoma and nine laparoscopic excisions for localized abdominal neuroblastoma performed at Saitama Children's Medical Center were evaluated. The laparosc…

Olfactory neuroblastoma in a horse.

An 11-year-old thoroughbred gelding was euthanatized because of right nasal cavity tumor. The tumor consisted of round to oval cells with a scanty cytoplasm and hyperchromatic nuclei. Homer-Wright rosettes and pseudorosettes, as well as microcysts were seen. Neoplastic cells were immunoreactive to vimentin, S-100 protein, and neuron-specific enolase, glial fibrillary acidic protein and microtube-associated protein in varying degrees, indicating neurogenic nature. Based on these findings, this tumor was diagnosed as an olfactory neuroblastoma. Since this type is an uncommon tumor showing histol…

The many faces of neuroblastoma.

Neuroblastoma is a common tumor in childhood. It arises in the adrenal gland or in various extraadrenal primary sites of the sympathetic chain. Clinically, it may present as an abdominal mass or as disseminated metastatic disease. We studied 52 patients with neuroblastoma, and the typical and unusual radiographic features of the disease are presented.

Thoracic neuroblastoma of the neonate.

Five cases of neonatal thoracic neuroblastoma were either clinically asymptomatic or presented as uncharacteristic respiratory distress. Chest radiography demonstrated a spectrum of abnormalities varying from a lobulated, apical thoracic mass with or without evidence of expansion, to a spindle-shaped paraspinal soft tissue widening, or a homogeneously dense hemithorax. In the newborn a neoplasm in the posterior mediastinum most likely represents a neuroblastoma, either primary or metastatic. In a high percentage of cases the primary tumour as well as possible skeletal metastases have an increa…

Peptichemio in neuroblastoma at relapse.

Peptichemio (PTC), a multipeptidic complex of m-L-phenyl-alanine mustard, was administered to 39 children with neuroblastoma at relapse. The compound was given in two 5-day cycles at dosages varying from 1.0-1.5 mg/kg/day. We were able to evaluate 29 of the initial 39 children for PTC effect; 21 of them had received PTC as first therapy following diagnosis. Ten patients underwent other chemotherapy for relapse before PTC. Three patients were off therapy when relapse occurred. Subjective improvement was observed in 18 cases (62%). Eleven patients (38%) experienced an objective regression, which…

[Neuroblastoma of the olfactory nerve].

The histopathology of neuroblastomas of the olfactory nerve, especially the difficult differential diagnosis is described by means of our own observations, and compared with other less differentiated malignant tumours of the inner nose. Ultrastructural results are presented, histogenesis and classification of olfactory neuroblastomas in neuroepithelioma, neurocytoma and neuroblastoma are discussed. The literature is reviewed, whereby clinical symptoms, therapy and prognosis of these tumours are described.

Prognostic factors in neuroblastomas.

The clinical and histological factors affecting prognosis for 70 patients with neuroblastomas were tested with regression analysis. Generalized tumor disease was found to be of primary importance. Significant predictors for prognosis in patients without distant metastases were operation, with or without other therapy, age less than one year and histology. When all recorded factors were analyzed the explanation value only reached 0.42. This indicates that the variation in prognosis depends upon other factors as well.
