[Localized bilateral and symmetrical neurofibromatosis].

INTRODUCTION: We report the first case of bilateral neurofibromatosis localized distally on the lower limbs. CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old woman presented about 20 nodular lesions of the plantar and both lateral aspects of both feet which developed progressively after age 30. Histology examination evidenced neurofibromas. Clinical features and laboratory results enabled us to eliminate von Recklinghausen disease in this mother of 3 children. DISCUSSION: This observation allowed us to situate symmetrical and bilateral neurofibromatosis in the Riccardi classification for genetic counselling. We c

[Digestive hemorrhage in a patient with multiple neurofibromatosis].

Neurofibromatosis is an autosomal dominant trait with variable expressivity clinically defined by the coexistence of multiple cafè au lait spots, subcutaneous neurofibromas and Lisch nodules. Hemorrhage from intestinal neurofibromas or related tumors may be life-threatening because often inaccessible and therefore difficult to locate. The Authors report a case of gastrointestinal hemorrhage in a 68 year old patient with neurofibromatosis who had an episode of melena from duodenal ulcer endoscopically detected 5 years earlier. Endoscopy failed to discover the site of bleeding; this was successf

Ras signaling and therapies.

More than 25 years have passed since activating mutations in Ras genes were identified in DNA from human tumors. In this time, it has been established beyond doubt that these mutations play a direct role in causing cancer, and do so in collaboration with a number of other oncogenes and tumor suppressors. Oncogenic mutant Ras proteins are resistant to downregulation by GAP-mediated hydrolysis of bound GTP, and therefore signal persistently. Efforts to develop therapies that block Ras oncoprotein function directly have failed. The high affinity of Ras proteins for GTP has discouraged attempts to

Neurofibrosarcoma - complicating neurofibromatosis-I: case report and review of relevant literature.

SUMMARY: Neurofibromatosis I is a multi systemic genetic and progressive disorder. Malignancy is one of the several complications and frequency of neurofibrosarcoma is significantly higher in NF-I patients. Neurofibromatosis was noted at 2 years after birth and overtime became malignant for which a below the knee amputation was done at the age of 29 years. Malignant transformation probably occurred prior to excision of the tumour at 26 years. Recurrence within 18 months is suggestive of inadequate excision and of a slow growing tumour. Diagnosis was missed despite previous presentation to othe

Neurofibromatosis as a gateway to better treatment for a variety of malignancies.

The neurofibromatoses (NF) are a group of rare genetic disorders that can affect all races equally at an incidence from 1:3000 (NF1) to a log unit lower for NF2 and schwannomatosis. Since the research community is reporting an increasing number of malignant cancers that carry mutations in the NF genes, the general interest of both the research and pharma community is increasing and the authors saw an opportunity to present a novel, fresh approach to drug discovery in NF. The aim of the paper is to challenge the current drug discovery approach to NF, whereby existing targeted therapies that are…

The impact of a virtual mind-body program on symptoms of depression and anxiety among international English-speaking adults with neurofibromatosis.

The neurofibromatoses (NFs) are a set of incurable genetic disorders that predispose individuals to nervous system tumors. Although many patients experience anxiety and depression, there is little research on psychosocial interventions in this population. The present study examined the effects of a mind-body intervention on depression and anxiety in adults with NF. This is a secondary analysis of the Relaxation Response Resiliency Program for NF (3RP-NF), an 8-week virtual group intervention that teaches mind-body skills (e.g., relaxation, mindfulness) to improve quality of life. Participants …
