OBJECTIVE: To study the feasibility of breast conserving treatment in breast cancer patients with nipple discharge.
METHODS: Retrospective analysis were carried out in 7 cases of breast cancer patients with nipple discharge who were treated by central segmental resection with latissimus dorsi myocutaneous transfer.

The authors present the diverse etiology of nipple discharge, which background may be a tumor. They discuss the checkup ways of nipple discharge and review in detail the galactographic technique and evaluation. The examination of pathologic nipple discharge is essentially based on contact cytology, x-ray-, and ultrasound mammography. Consequently, galactography is applied by filling the ducts with contrast material. The final diagnosis is rendered by histologic examination, following the operation. Breast enlargement with bloody discharge is very rare in childhood. We report a two year-old boy with breast enlargement and bloody discharge. Because of persistent bloody discharge, subcutaneous mastectomy was performed. The specimen showed histologic changes identical to those seen in adult mammary duct ectasia. We suggested that the infant's own endocrine system is responsible for breast enlargement and mammary duct ectasia, possibly occurring as a result of a mechanism similar to that in adults.

Serum prolactin levels were determined in 25 women who underwent galactography on account of pathological nipple discharge. The test samples were obtained immediately before galactography as well as 5, 10, 15 and 30 minutes after. There was no significant change in serum prolactin levels following galactography.
