The role of Poison Control Centers in radiation accidents.

In the days after the nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl (USSR) in April 1986, the Dutch Poison Control Center had to answer questions concerning possible health effects caused by (over)exposure to ionizing radiation. These questions were similar to questions asked regarding exposure to toxic agents after chemical accidents. It is obvious that the experience and practical approach of a Poison Control Center in handling toxicological problems can be used in problems concerning ionizing radiation.

An increased frequency of structural chromosome aberrations in persons present in the vicinity of Chernobyl during and after the reactor accident. Is this effect caused by radiation exposure?

About a week after the reactor accident in Chernobyl, a number of German citizens returned to the Federal Republic of Germany from different places of residence in the U.S.S.R. Chromosome analyses of these individuals show a surprisingly significant increase in dicentric chromosomes in comparison to the laboratory control. Acentrics are nearly twice as frequent as dicentrics. Centric rings are also in evidence. Chromatid breaks do not significantly differ from the control with the exception of 1 place of residence. The frequency of aberrations is too high to be induced by absorbed doses calcul

Cancer Throughlines: 40 Years After Chernobyl Disaster, Research on Cancer Impact Carries On.

On April 26, 1986, Reactor Number 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded, releasing massive amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere. Exposed children contracted papillary thyroid carcinoma at elevated rates, and on the eve of the 40-year anniversary, many studies are now focused on the transgenerational health effects of the disaster.

Nuclear Cogeneration of Methanol and Acetaldehyde from Ethylene Glycol Using Ionizing Radiation.

Despite offering low-carbon and reliable energy, the utilization of nuclear energy is declining globally due to high upfront capital costs and longer returns on investments. Nuclear cogeneration of valuable chemicals from waste biomass-derived feedstocks could have beneficial impacts while harnessing the underutilized resource of ionizing energy. Here, we demonstrate selective methanol or acetaldehyde production from ethylene glycol, a feedstock derived from glycerol, a byproduct of biodiesel, using irradiations from a nuclear fission reactor. The influence of radiation quality, dose rate, and

In situ long-term reductive bioimmobilization of Cr(VI) in groundwater using hydrogen release compound.

The results of a field experiment designed to test the effectiveness of a novel approach for long-term, in situ bioimmobilization of toxic and soluble Cr(VI) in groundwater using a hydrogen release compound (HRC)--a slow release glycerol polylactate--are described. The field experiment was conducted at the Hanford Site (Washington), a U.S. Department of Energy nuclear production facility, using a combination of hydrogeological, geophysical, geochemical, and microbiological measurements and analyses of water samples and sediments. The results of this experiment show that a single HRC injection

[The hormonal functions regulating carbohydrate metabolism in participants in the cleanup of the sequelae of the accident at the Chernobyl Atomic Electric Power Station with a neurocirculatory dystonia syndrome].

Radioimmunoassay revealed in participants of Chernobyl disaster sequelae preclinical changes of some hormonal functions: moderate increase of the basal concentration of blood insulin, somatotropin, C-peptide against the background of persistent hypercortisolemia. Increase of the level of "hyperglycemic" hormones (cortisol, somatotropin, C-peptide) is explained by adaptative and compensatory reactions of the body in response to lesioning effects of ionizing radiation and other negative factors of the Chernobyl accident. Relative hyperinsulinemia is, apparently, compensating the total hyperglyce

Incidence of legal abortions and congenital abnormalities in Hungary.

The annual and monthly distributions of congenital abnormalities and pregnancy outcomes as confounding factors were evaluated in Hungary in reflection of the accident at the Chernobyl reactor. The different congenital abnormality entities and the components of fetal radiation syndrome did not show a higher rate after the Chernobyl accident in the data-set of the Hungarian Congenital Abnormality Registry. Among confounding factors, the rate of induced abortions did not increase after the Chernobyl accident in Hungary. In the 9th month after the peak of public concern (May and June, 1986) the ra

The prevalence at birth of congenital malformations in communities near the Hanford site.

The authors examined the prevalence of congenital malformations among births in Benton and Franklin counties, in southeastern Washington State, from 1968 through 1980. The Hanford Site is in this area and serves as a major employer. In addition, various agriculturally and chemically related activities are in the area. Hospital and vital records were used to identify 454 malformation cases among 23,319 births; this yielded a malformation rate of 19.6 per 1,000 births, a rate similar to those reported in other studies. The rates of specific malformations ascertained during the first year of life

Mortality of workers at the Sellafield plant of British Nuclear Fuels.

The mortality of all 14,327 people who were known to have been employed at the Sellafield plant of British Nuclear Fuels at any time between the opening of the site in 1947 and 31 December 1975 was studied up to the end of 1983. The vital state of 96% of the workers was traced satisfactorily and 2277 were found to have died, 572 (25%) from cancer. On average the workers suffered a mortality from all causes that was 2% less than that of the general population of England and Wales and 9% less than that of the population of Cumberland (the area in which the plant is sited). Their mortality from c

Childhood cancer near German nuclear power stations.

In 2008, the Kinderkrebs in der Umgebung von Kernkraftwerken (KiKK) study in Germany reported a 60% increase in solid cancers and a 120% increase in leukemias among children living within 5 km of all German nuclear power stations. The study has triggered debates as to the cause(s) of these increased cancers. This article reports on the findings of the KiKK study; discusses past and more recent epidemiological studies of leukemias near nuclear installations around the world, and outlines a possible biological mechanism to explain the increased cancers. This suggests that the observed high rates

Americium Inhalational Exposure with Successful Chelation Therapy.

Americium is a man-made metal produced in very small quantities in nuclear reactors. Americium-241 is one of the radioactive isotopes of americium and has commercial applications, including use in smoke detectors. This is a case report of an occupational inhalation of americium-241, treated with both effective external decontamination and the use of diethylenetriamine pentaacetate to promote decorporation. This experience is significant because of the potential for americium or similar radionuclides to be used in "dirty" bombs or other radiological dispersion devices to cause large-scale radio

A self-organized sandwich structure of chromium nitride for ultra-long lifetime in liquid sodium.

The development of fast neutron reactors with improved efficiency and sustainability, being a tangible solution to the large-scale utilization of nuclear energy, serves as a critical step prior to the commercialization of fusion energy. These reactors use liquid metal coolants, which can weaken the durability of metallic components. Conventional design of protective coatings counts upon thermodynamics, which often overlooks the kinetic factors such as structural evolutions, resulting in deteriorated coating properties. Herein, we present a novel interface-engineering strategy involving the con

A review of probability of causation and its use in a compensation scheme for nuclear industry workers in the United Kingdom.

The assumption that any additional exposure to ionizing radiation leads to an increase in the risk of stochastic health effects implies that some cases of these effects will be caused by exposure incurred occupationally. The main health effect expected to arise in the exposed individuals is cancer. Such radiation-induced cancers cannot be distinguished from the far larger number of background cancers, and, therefore, causation must be assessed statistically. The probability of causation methodology has been developed to ascertain the likelihood that a particular cancer may be attributed to a p

[Nutritional status and radionuclide contents of food rations of rural population in the Ukrainian region controlled after the Chernobyl AES accident].

Chemical composition, energy value and 137Cs and 90Sr content in daily diets were assessed in rural population from the region controlled after the Chernobyl accident. As shown by low urine excretion of vitamins (thiamine, ascorbic acid, riboflavin, N1-methylnicotinamide), the population suffer from vitamin deficiency, especially in winter and spring. Levels of the radionuclides rose 1.3-19.7 and 3.4-24.8-fold for 137Cs and 90Sr, respectively.

Chromosome analysis in a population living in an area of Germany with the highest fallout deposition from the Chernobyl accident.

Chromosome analyses were carried out in 1989 in peripheral lymphocytes of 30 persons from the region in southeast Bavaria (Berchtesgaden) that received the highest radiocesium deposition (> 42 kBq/m2) in Germany. These persons belonged to a group for whom body burdens of radiocesium had been surveyed in 1987. Chromosome analyses had been performed by Stephan and Oestreicher for members of the same group in the period 1987-1990, and these authors have reported elevated rates of chromosome aberrations. Pohl-Rüling et al. (1991) have, likewise, concluded that there have been increased rates of ch

A cytogenetic study of men occupationally exposed to uranium.

Blood lymphocyte cultures from two groups of workers occupationally exposed to uranium were examined for asymmetrical chromosome aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs). Significant increases in both cytogenetic endpoints were seen. For dicentrics this appeared to be particularly associated with exposure to soluble uranium. The external radiation exposure experienced by these men was insufficient to explain the increase in dicentrics, and irradiation of lymphocytes by internally deposited uranium would have been minimal. As the SCEs were also raised, the genotoxic effect is likely to
