Nursing Assessment, Education, and Care of Extremely Premature Neonates with Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

The care of extremely premature neonates with suspected or confirmed diagnosis of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a frequent challenge for pediatric nurses. It is important for nurses to have adequate knowledge of the normal postnatal changes in cardiovascular and pulmonary function to recognize any adverse symptoms. Nurses caring for these vulnerable neonates must have a thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of a PDA in order to assess, plan, and implement patient-centered care. Recognition of characteristic symptoms of PDA in a timely manner is essential for optimal management and

Discrepancies in oral mucositis pain assessment in pediatric oncology: Implications for nursing practice.

OBJECTIVE: Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent and clinically significant complication of chemotherapy in paediatric oncology, often resulting in substantial pain and functional impairment. Despite its prevalence, discrepancies in pain assessment across informants may contribute to suboptimal symptom management. This study examined differences in OM-related pain ratings among children, parents, and nurses, and evaluated agreement between two validated pain assessment instruments. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed with 45 children receiving chemotherapy in a paediatric hemato-oncolo

The study aims to proactively analyze the chemotherapy drug management process, focusing on the nursing role: identifying error modes and proposing improvement interventions. A quality improvement project was conducted at an Onco-Hematological Department, applying a systematic and prospective approach to evaluate the critical phases of the chemotherapy drug process. A risk analysis was conducted using Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA). A multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals with experience in the sector mapped the process, identified potential failure modes,

Implementation of Nursing Protocols for Penicillin-Allergy Assessment in a Sexual Health Clinic.

Penicillin-allergy assessment within sexual health clinics is critical for timely, safe, and effective syphilis treatment among marginalized populations who experience multiple barriers to care. It is also an important public health measure to support antibiotic stewardship in populations at high-risk for antibiotic use. This report describes a quality improvement project in a sexual health clinic that used nursing protocols for penicillin-allergy assessment with a validated risk scoring tool (PEN-FAST) and direct oral amoxicillin challenge. In the first year of protocol implementation, just o

Nursing Assessment of Vascular Complications after Cardiac Catheterization through the Distal Radial Artery.

BACKGROUND: Distal Radial Artery (DRA) is a new arterial access for coronary catheterization. Assessment of the vascular complications of this new procedure is important in the provision of nursing care to cardiac patients. The aim of this study was the nursing assessment of vascular complications of DRA in angiography and angioplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative longitudinal study was conducted on 315 consecutive patients who were candidates for coronary catheterization via DRA from 2017 to 2020 in three hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Patients who had palpable DRA and were capable an…

Development and psychometric evaluation of the nurses' elder abuse assessment scale.

This study aimed to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a nurse-administered instrument for the structured assessment of indicators potentially associated with elder abuse. Scale items were generated through literature review and expert evaluation, yielding a content validity index of 0.878. Each nurse assessed one unique older adult. Exploratory factor analysis included 373 nurse-older adult dyads, and confirmatory factor analysis included 334 independent dyads, totaling 707 assessments. Older adults were required to communicate effectively and be clinically suitable for asses

Magnet Status in Nurse Practitioners' Care Assessments and Hospital Recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Nurse practitioners (NPs) are a growing segment of the acute care hospital workforce, yet little is known about how organizational factors, such as Magnet designation, influence their workplace experiences. OBJECTIVES: We examined whether employment in a Magnet hospital was associated with NPs' strong recommendation of their hospital and whether this relationship was explained by NPs' assessments of care quality, patient safety, and care transitions. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed data from 774 NPs across 425 US hospitals using the 2024 Penn Nurses4All Survey

Training needs of community nurses in the assessment and management of urinary continence.

The wide-ranging and demanding role of community nurses is widely recognised. They need to be able to assess and manage a multitude of medical symptoms, general health issues and social factors. As a result, it is essential to have an expansive knowledge base as a starting point. However, the challenge of working in the community, often alone, also means needing a high level of expertise to tackle some challenging and demanding situations. It is essential to recognise this when exploring the training needs of community-based clinicians, as training needs assessment, and any subsequent plans to

Validated Tools for Assessing Anxiety and Depression in Nurses: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses experience substantial anxiety and depression; robust, validated instruments are needed. We aimed to identify tools used to assess these conditions in nurses. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in December 2024 and registered in OSF and PROSPERO. MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, and PsycINFO were searched for quantitative studies (2014-2024) in English/Spanish that included nurses only and used standardized measures. Two reviewers screened and extracted the data; quality was appraised with JBI checklists, narrative synthesis only. RESULTS: Twenty-two studies (n = 10,710 nu

Optimizing Nurses' Time: Reducing Assessment Frequency in General Care.

BACKGROUND: Nurses represent a limited resource in the hospital environment. For decades, inpatient nurses have conducted head-to-toe assessments in roughly the same manner. At Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, the practice has been twice-daily head-to-toe assessments, without reviewing the benefit of this frequency (vis-à-vis once daily) for patients, staff, and the institution. PURPOSE: This quality improvement (QI) project in a general care setting explored whether decreasing comprehensive physical assessments from twice daily to once daily was associated with changes in patient safety

Indicators of maladaptive emotions in patients with cancer as assessed by oncologists and nurses.

PURPOSE: The clinical management of patients with cancer by oncologists and nurses needs to differentiate between maladaptive emotions that do require professional mental health care and adaptive emotions that do not require such care. Previous qualitative research identified six symptoms as potential indicators of maladaptive emotions. These included lingering, increasing or extreme emotions, emotions that interfere with daily life or with treatment, and unexplained somatic symptoms. The present study tested the validity of these symptoms as indicators of maladaptive emotions in patients with

Pain assessment and interventions by nurses in the emergency department: A national survey.

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the knowledge, perceptions and factors influencing pain assessment and management practices among Australian emergency nurses. BACKGROUND: Pain is the most commonly reported symptom in patients presenting to the emergency department, with over half rating their pain as moderate-to-severe. Patients unable to communicate, such as critically ill intubated patients, are at greater risk of inadequate pain management. DESIGN: This cross-sectional exploratory study used survey methodology to explore knowledge, perceptions and factors influencing pain manage

A model program for teaching nurses breast assessment and cancer screening.

The increasing incidence of breast cancer in the United States is well documented in the literature. Associated with this rise is a need for additional health care providers who are well versed in the detection of early breast cancer and who are dedicated public advocates of self-examination skills. To meet this challenge, approximately 300 nurses throughout the U.S. and Europe have attended a course designed at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center during the past decade. This article provides an overview of the program, including demographic data describing nurses who completed the course during 1989.
