Nutrition implications for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

Prenatal alcohol exposure produces a multitude of detrimental alcohol-induced defects in children collectively known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Children with FASD often exhibit delayed or abnormal mental, neural, and physical growth. Socioeconomic status, race, genetics, parity, gravidity, age, smoking, and alcohol consumption patterns are all factors that may influence FASD. Optimal maternal nutritional status is of utmost importance for proper fetal development, yet is often altered with alcohol consumption. It is critical to determine a means to resolve and reduce the physic

Intestinal permeability and nutritional status in developmental disorders.

CONTEXT: Autism is a developmental disorder with a possible connection between dietary components and triggering or worsening of symptoms. An altered intestinal permeability might allow absorption of incompletely digested peptides (gluten and casein) that could produce opioid-like activity on the brain, causing significant changes in behavior. OBJECTIVE: To assess the intestinal permeability and nutritional status of participants with developmental disorders to determine if changes in the intestinal mucosal barrier and/or injury to the intercellular junctions have occurred that might justify

Indirect calorimetry in the nutritional management of eating disorders.

The caloric prescription, a key component of the nutritional therapy of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), may be empirically prescribed, or based on predicted resting energy expenditure (REE), yet adaptive changes in the metabolic rate may render both methods unreliable. Indirect calorimetry measurement of fasting REE was obtained in 32 patients with AN (n = 21) or BN (n = 11). Predicted REE was calculated according to the Harris-Benedict equation, and empiric caloric prescriptions were made by experienced physicians. In the AN group, mean measured REE was significantly lower tha

Nutritional therapy for pregnant women with a metabolic disorder.

Nutritional therapy is essential for a normal reproductive outcome in phenylketonuric women. In homocystinuria, fetal outcome is good in women whose disorder is responsive to vitamin B6 therapy and is poor in women whose disorder is unresponsive to therapy. Pregnancy in galactosemia is rare because of the almost universal ovarian dysfunction present in female patients with this disorder. Transplantation of the fertilized ovum is a promising possibility for these women. In women with MSUD, there has been only one case of pregnancy reported to date.

Common nutritional disorders in the elderly: atypical manifestations.

Nutritional problems are commonly seen in elderly persons living in both community and institutional settings. Multiple interacting medical problems, age-related physiological changes, and low socio-economic status are just some of the factors placing the older person at greater risk for nutritional problems. Nutritional inadequacies often have a slow and insidious onset; many of the presenting features mimic changes of normal aging. Absence of clear-cut signs and symptoms may easily lead to a delay in the diagnosis of these potentially serious yet easily reversible conditions. Practicing phys

A CEREBELLAR DISORDER IN CHICKS, APPARENTLY OF NUTRITIONAL ORIGIN.

Growing chicks maintained on a diet consisting of milk powder, casein, starch, yeast, cod liver oil, salts and filter paper develop ataxia, tremors, retraction or twisting of the head, clonic spasms of the legs, and stupor. These symptoms may appear suddenly, usually between the 18th and 25th day, and may end in death. If recovery takes place, the chicks may go on to normal development. Definite lesions are found in the cerebellum of the affected chicks. These consist of edema, necrosis and hemorrhages. Hyaline thrombi are found in the capillaries in and about the degenerated areas.

Nutrition Management in Patients With Chronic Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders: A Systematic Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to systematically review effects of nutrition interventions on outcomes in patients with chronic gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders. There is currently a lack of evidence-based guidelines for nutrition management in this group, likely a result of the rarity of the conditions. METHODS: A systematic review of all study types to evaluate current evidence-based nutrition interventions was performed using Medline, Embase, and CINAHL databases. Two independent reviewers participated in the process of this systematic review. A total of 15 studies and a tot

The importance of nutrition in aiding recovery from substance use disorders: A review.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is a prerequisite for health; yet, there is no special nutritional assessment or guidance for drug and alcohol dependent individuals, despite the fact that their food consumption is often very limited, risking malnutrition. Further, the premise is examined that malnutrition may promote drug seeking and impede recovery from substance use disorders (SUD). METHOD: A narrative review addressed the relationship between substance use disorders and nutrition, including evidence for malnutrition, as well as their impact on metabolism and appetite regulation. The implications of

Eating disorders: current nutrition therapy and perceived needs in dietetics education and research.

OBJECTIVE: Research was conducted to obtain a profile of nutrition therapy currently in practice for patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia/bulimia (mixed diagnosis) and to identify the areas of dietetics education and research regarding eating disorders that need more attention. DESIGN: A cross-sectional correlational survey was conducted by mailing a questionnaire composed of open- and closed-ended questions to US dietitians who work with patients who have eating disorders. SAMPLE: Of 199 dietitians selected from a list of 495 representing all geographic areas of the

Prevalence of eating disorders among dietetics students: does nutrition education make a difference?

Several studies have indicated that college students majoring in dietetics have more problems associated with food than do students majoring in other disciplines. If this is true, dietetics students may need more counseling and education on eating disorders, especially because many will eventually be counseling others professionally. To assess the prevalence of negative eating behaviors among college dietetics majors, surveys based on the Eating Pattern Questionnaire were distributed to college women with majors in dietetics and other selected disciplines at a medium-sized California universit

Advances in Cardiolipin Analysis: Applications in Central Nervous System Disorders and Nutrition Interventions.

Cardiolipin (CL), a unique dimeric phospholipid predominantly enriched in the inner mitochondrial membrane, is a crucial determinant of mitochondrial structure and function. Its content, fatty acyl composition, and oxidation state are associated with mitochondrial bioenergetics, dynamics, and cellular signaling. Disruptions in CL metabolism are increasingly implicated in the pathogenesis of various central nervous system (CNS) disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury. This narrative review summarizes rece

Nutrition and Nutraceuticals in Neuroinflammatory and Brain Metabolic Stress: Implications for Neurodegenerative Disorders.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A steep rise in the incidences of neurodegenerative disorders could be the combined effect of several non-genetic factors such as increased life expectancy, environmental pollutants, lifestyle, and dietary habits, as population-level genetic change require multiple generations. Emerging evidence suggests that chronic over-nutrition induces brain metabolic stress and neuroinflammation, and are individually known to promote neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and Huntington's disease (HD). Although the association of

Metabolic bone disease in gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic disorders and total parenteral nutrition.

Privational vitamin D deficiency is assumed to be uncommon in the developed countries because of the routine fortification of foods with vitamin D. Malabsorption of vitamin D and calcium (especially in an environment of reduced sun exposure) therefore accounts for the majority of cases of metabolic bone disease seen in patients with various gastrointestinal disorders in the United States. Yet recognition of this often asymptomatic bone disease is unsatisfactory and frequently delayed for months or even years. This results in severe irreversible bone loss, putting patients at increased fracture
