Malnutrition in India: status and government initiatives.

Malnutrition, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), refers to deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in a person's intake of energy and/or nutrients. It is well-known that maternal, infant, and child nutrition play significant roles in the proper growth and development, including future socio-economic status of the child. Reports of National Health & Family Survey, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, and WHO have highlighted that rates of malnutrition among adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women, and children are alarmingly high in India. Factors responsi

Nurturing and nourishing: the nurses' role in nutritional care.

AIMS: Researchers collaborated with clinicians, consumers and dietitians to develop a policy defining how nurses could support their patients' nutritional care. BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of hospital malnutrition has been reported in Australia, Europe and the UK. A patient's nutritional status can deteriorate during admission. Malnutrition can increase complications, length of stay, mortality rates and health care costs. As the nursing role has become increasingly complex, traditional nurturing activities such as serving the patients' meals have devolved to other categories of staff leavin

Indian nutritionists and international nutritional standards: concepts and controversies.

This paper explores how Indian nutritional scientists and policy planners have influenced the formulation and interpretation of standards of nutritional status. It draws on diverse published evidence by Indian scientists on three controversial issues: (1) the validity and applicability of international nutritional standards to India; (2) the so-called protein gap; and (3) the 'small but healthy' hypothesis. The paper concludes that Indian scientists have had considerable influence in international nutrition and food policy debates. Moreover, their positions seem to have been motivated more by

Assessing the implementation of national sodium reduction policies in Nigeria: an interim qualitative evaluation of stakeholder perspectives.

INTRODUCTION: Population-wide dietary sodium reduction is a global priority and a highly cost-effective strategy to lower blood pressure and reduce cardiovascular disease risk. In response, the Nigerian government launched the National Multi-sectoral Action Plan (NMSAP) in 2019, recommending evidence-based policy actions including limiting sodium in processed foods, restricting food advertising especially for children, promoting public awareness, integrating nutrition education in schools, and front-of-package labeling. We conducted a qualitative study to examine progress, barriers, and facili

The Nutritional Assessment of Bureau of Prisons Mid-Atlantic Region Commissary Offerings.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has both formal policies and internal guidelines for commissary food items that aim to increase access and provide nutritional information for individuals who experience incarceration. The purpose of this research was to determine (a) the nutritional assessment of commissary offerings by the BOP Mid-Atlantic Region because little is known about the foods offered in commissaries, (b) if the BOP commissaries align with recommended packaged snack food and nutrition standards, and (c) if they follow their own policies and standards for healthy commissary food of

Nutrition in Midwestern State Department of Corrections Prisons: A Comparison of Nutritional Offerings With Commonly Utilized Nutritional Standards.

Improvement in nutritional care in correctional institutions may reduce the burden of related chronic health conditions. Even when nutritional standards are used, inconsistent use of standards and lacking regulations may be leading to inappropriate or inconsistent nutrition care in corrections. Midwestern state department of corrections' menus revealed excessive calorie offerings and low offerings of vegetables on male and female menus, and low fruit and dietary fiber offerings on male menus. A majority of vitamin and mineral offerings met recommendations when reported; however, they were inco

U.S. Immigration Policy Environment Contributions to Maternal and Child Health in the Latino Population.

Latino families in the United States experience persistent maternal and child health (MCH) inequities driven by a fragmented immigration and public benefits policy environment rather than inherent health differences. Although most Latino children are U.S.-born citizens, many live in mixed-status families in which immigration status determines eligibility for health care, nutrition assistance, and other essential services. This narrative policy review examines U.S. immigration and public benefit policies from 1965 to 2025 to assess how eligibility rules, enforcement practices, and policy instab

Applying traditional K-foods to official development assistance programs for micronutrient deficiency nutrition support.

Micronutrient deficiencies are a major public health concern in low- and middle-income countries, where conventional supplementation and fortification programs are often limited by low bioavailability, fragile supply chains, cultural resistance, and poor long-term adherence. This research note proposes a food-based alternative model that leverages selected traditional Korean foods (K-foods)- gim (dried seaweed), kimchi (fermented vegetables), and cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste)-as culturally adaptable and nutritionally dense components of official development assistance nutrition strat
