Proteomics in Patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Systematic Review of Observational Studies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a disease of unknown pathophysiology, with the diagnosis being based on a set of clinical criteria. Proteomic analysis can provide significant biological information for the pathophysiology of the disease but may also reveal biomarkers for diagnosis or therapeutic targets. The present systematic review aims to synthesize the evidence regarding the proteome of adult patients with FMS using data from observational studies. RECENT FINDINGS: An extensive literature search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, CENTRAL, and clinicaltrials.gov from incept

Prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of congenital cataract: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Congenital cataract (CC) is the primary cause of treatable childhood blindness worldwide. The establishment of reliable, epidemiological estimates is an essential first step towards management strategies. We undertook an initial systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence and other epidemiological characteristics of CC. PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched before January 2015. A meta-analysis with random-effects model based on a proportions approach was performed to determine the population-based prevalence of CC and to describe the dat

DESIGN: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. DATA SOURCES: The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases were searched from their inception to 25 May 2024. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR SELECTING STUDIES: We included observational studies from peer-reviewed English-language journals that examined tinnitus presence or severity in adults aged 18 years or older, including associated prevalence estimates. Non-epileptic paroxysmal events in Rett syndrome: A systematic review of case-based and observational evidence.

AIM: To systematically review and characterize the spectrum of non-epileptic paroxysmal events in individuals with Rett syndrome (RTT). METHOD: We conducted a descriptive systematic review of observational evidence. Searches were conducted across the PubMed, Embase, and OVID databases for studies published from January 1962 to September 2024. Eligible studies included case reports, case series, cohort studies, and small clinical trials that described non-epileptic events in individuals with clinically or genetically confirmed RTT. Data were extracted on study design, participant characteristi

Sarcopenia and health-related quality of life: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The decrease of physical abilities and functional decline that can be caused by musculoskeletal conditions such as sarcopenia, can lead to higher levels of dependency and disability. Therefore, it may influence patient reported outcome measures (PROM), such as the health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to provide a comprehensive overview of the relationship between sarcopenia and HRQoL. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) were followed throughout the whole process of this work. A protocol was pr

Evaluation of formaldehyde as an ocular irritant: a systematic review and Meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to use meta-regression to evaluate the safety of the maximum allowable dose of formaldehyde in terms of eye irritation symptoms. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of literature published in the PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases. We selected clinical trials, cohort studies, and case-control studies that compared eye irritation between patients exposed and not exposed to formaldehyde. Eighteen of the 2561 studies retrieved met the inclusion criteria. Data were extracted using structured forms and study quality was

Mortality in bullous pemphigoid: A systematic review and meta-analysis of standardized mortality ratios.

There are inconsistent data on mortality rates in patients with bullous pemphigoid (BP). Trends in mortality in BP throughout the years are yet to be established. The aim of the present study was to study the mortality in BP patients relative to the general population and to estimate trends in standardized mortality over the past 30 years. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies in Medline, Embase and Scopus (1823-2017). Reference lists of included studies were also searched for eligible studies. Quality of evidence was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Sc

The prevalence of onychomycosis in psoriatic patients: a systematic review.

We systematically reviewed all available literature concerning the prevalence of onychomycosis in patients with nail psoriasis and the distribution of pathogens causing onychomycosis in this specific group of patients. Databases searched were Pubmed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Controlled Clinical Trial Register. All studies reporting on the prevalence of onychomycosis in nail psoriasis were obtained, and quality assessment was determined by the STrengthening the Reporting of OBservational studies in Epidemiology checklist. Literature search revealed 720 studies, of which 10 studies met the inclus

Orexin receptor antagonists in the treatment of insomnia associated with psychiatric disorders: a systematic review.

Insomnia is highly comorbid in patients with psychiatric disorders, including depression, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, and should be treated as an independent condition. Dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs) have been investigated as a treatment for chronic insomnia. The objective of this systematic review was to examine evidence for two DORAs, lemborexant and suvorexant, as treatments for insomnia comorbid with a psychiatric disorder. We searched PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase from their inception until January and April 2023, and included studies examining suvorexant and l

Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists: A New Frontier in Treating Alcohol Use Disorder.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), which were originally developed for managing type 2 diabetes by enhancing insulin secretion and reducing appetite, have emerged as promising candidates in alcohol use disorder (AUD). These medications offer a dual mechanism of action that aligns with the multifaceted nature of addiction by targeting both peripheral metabolic and central reward pathways. This review focused on the current clinical trials and real-world evidence regarding the effects of GLP-1RAs as novel therapeutics for AUD. We also discussed early but

Target Trial Emulation or Target Trial Approximation?

Target trial emulation has contributed to improvements in the design and interpretation of observational studies aimed at causal inference. By encouraging researchers to think explicitly about the design of a hypothetical randomized trial, it has helped identify and address avoidable design flaws. However, the framework cannot overcome biases and limitations inherent in observational data. Despite the aim of emulating a randomized trial, observational data cannot reproduce random treatment assignment or blinding, and may not necessarily provide greater generalizability than a randomized trial.

Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology Enhanced Prevalence and Incidence Criteria (STROBE EPIC): An Extension of the STROBE Statement.

Prevalence and incidence are fundamental metrics with numerous applications in epidemiology. The Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guideline lacks specific items for reporting studies of disease prevalence or incidence. To address this gap, the STROBE Enhanced Prevalence and Incidence Criteria (STROBE EPIC) extension was developed in accordance with established methods for reporting guideline development. The authors generated an initial list of reporting items, conducted a modified Delphi process, and convened a face-to-face consensus meeting to con
