[Calcifying odontogenic cyst. Report of a case].

It is presented a case of odontogenic calcifying cyst associated to an odontoma and to an impacted tooth treated by descompression. After 4 (four) years control there was no sign of recidive and the tooth was brought back to its original axis of eruption.

Quantitation of lactoferrin in odontogenic cyst fluids.

A competitive enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method was used to measure the concentration of lactoferrin in fluids from 36 odontogenic keratocysts, 15 dentigerous cysts, and 30 radicular/residual cysts. Keratocyst fluids contained significantly higher concentrations of lactoferrin than fluids from the other two types of cyst (p less than 0.001); but the range of values obtained within each group was large. Although lactoferrin represents a larger proportion of the total protein in keratocyst fluids than in dentigerous or radicular cyst fluids, lactoferrin concentration is not an abs

The follicular primordial cyst - odontogenic keratocyst.

Primordial cysts are often associated with unerupted teeth. Superimposition may result in a 'dentigerous cyst' appearance radiographically. There is usually no direct connection between the cyst lining and the follicle of the unerupted tooth. These have been termed envelopmental primordial cysts. In some instances, however, the primordial cyst actually surrounds the crown and the cyst lining is attached to the neck of the tooth in a true dentigerous relationship. We have called these lesions follicular primordial cysts. That portion of the lining immediately adjacent to the neck of the tooth c

Glandular Odontogenic Cyst: Case Series.

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an uncommon and aggressive jaw cyst with a high recurrence rate. It may grow into a large size. Diagnosis of the cyst is challenging since it may be confused with some other jaw cysts and malignancies. Treatment methods vary from conservative surgery to radical bone resection. In this case series, we briefly present five cases of GOC diagnosed and treated at our clinic. Thorough histopathological diagnosis and long-term follow-up are necessary in patients with GOC.

Glandular odontogenic cyst: A rare entity.

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an uncommon developmental odontogenic cyst of jaws with a relative frequency between 0.012 and 1.3%. GOC is very rare and only 111 cases have been documented in the English literature so far. Generally, this cyst is encountered in the anterior areas of the mandible and is more common with a wide age range, the mean age being 49.5 years and has a tendency to recur. GOC is often misdiagnosed because of its overlapping histopathological features with that of other odontogenic cysts such as lateral periodontal cyst (LPC) or botryoid cyst and central low-grade Mu…

Glandular odontogenic cyst: systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the principal features of "glandular odontogenic cyst" (GOC), by systematic review (SR), and to compare their frequencies among four global groups. METHODS: The databases searched were the PubMed interface of MEDLINE and LILACS. Only those reports of GOCs that occurred in a series in the reporting authors' caseload were considered. All cases were confirmed histopathologically. RESULTS: 18 reports on 17 series of consecutive cases were included in the SR. GOC affected males twice as frequently and the mandible almost three times as frequently.

Characteristics of calcifying odontogenic cyst in Taiwanese.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) is a rare type of odontogenic cyst. This retrospective study analyzed the clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic features of COC in Taiwanese. METHODS: Ten cases of COC in 2 male and 8 female patients with a mean age of 29 years (range, 11 to 48 years) treated from January 1985 to December 2002 were included. Microscopic slides, clinical histories, and radiographic features of these 10 COC cases were reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: COCs occurred in the maxilla in 3 cases and in the mandible in 7 cases. COCs were associated with i

Odontogenic tumors that mimic a dentigerous cyst.

Hyperplastic follicular tissue and a dentigerous cyst are the two most common entities associated with the crown of an impacted tooth. However, other diagnostic possibilities, including odontogenic tumors should also be considered in the differential diagnosis of a pericoronal radiolucency. This article presents three cases of radiolucent lesions that were histologically diagnosed as an odontogenic tumor, and stresses the importance of histological evaluation of all pericoronal radiolucencies.

These results suggest that lactoferrin in fluid from odontogenic cysts is derived from infiltrating neutrophils and that its presence in aspirated fluids is not a useful diagnostic marker for odontogenic keratocyst.

Radiographic characteristics of the calcifying odontogenic cyst.

4 additional cases of calcifying odontogenic cysts (COC) were reported, together with the radiographic interpretation of 138 cases from the literature. From the review of the literature and of our own cases, the root resorption is one of the most common diagnostic findings as is cystic radiolucency accompanied by radiopacities. Other radiographic characteristics, such as loculation, tooth divergency and bone resorption were emphasized.

Expression pattern of hypoxia-related genes in odontogenic cysts.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to reveal the effects of hypoxia-associated signaling in odontogenic cysts. DESIGN: The expression levels of genes involved in the hypoxia-associated signaling pathway were determined by quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method. RESULTS: As a result, it was found that phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) expression was low (p = 0.037), and the expression levels of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PIK3CA) (p = 0.0127), hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF1A) (p < 0.001), and HIF1A antisense RNA 1 (…

Transformation of Odontogenic Cysts to Neoplasms - A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts have the potential to transform into neoplasms. However, the characteristics of those which transformed to neoplastic tissues have not been well described and the exact causes of that phenomenon are not yet clear. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe characteristics of odontogenic cysts that transformed into neoplasms and to look for their potential etiologies. DATA SOURCES: English-written studies indexed in PubMed, Science Direct, and Proquest were assessed using keywords verified by Medical Subject Headings: 'Odontogenic Cyst' and 'Neoplastic Cell Transfor…

A Comparative Immunohistochemical Expression of TRAP in Odontogenic Cysts.

INTRODUCTION: Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is an acid phosphatase metalloprotein enzyme expressed in osteoclasts and is related to bone resorption. The molecular mechanisms involved in the different behavior of odontogenic keratocysts have not yet been fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to compare TRAP expression in odontogenic keratocysts, radicular cysts, and dentigerous cysts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we selected 60 samples, including 20 cases of each one of the odontogenic keratocysts (OKC), radicular cysts (RC) and dentigerous cysts

Endoscopic modified medial maxillectomy for odontogenic cysts and tumours.

The persistent hyperglycemic microenvironment in diabetic wounds causes dysfunction of repair cells, resulting in impaired angiogenesis and disorganized extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition. Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) derived from hypoxia-challenged chorionic plate mesenchymal stem cells (CP-MSC-sEVsHypo) have been explored as novel acellular therapeutics. However, the effects of oxygen tension during culturing parent cells on the pro-regenerative efficacy and mechanisms of CP-MSC-sEVs have not been systematically investigated. In addition, their rapid clearance and limited interacti
