Essential Oils as a Potential Treatment Option for Pediculosis.

Pediculosis is a prevalent ectoparasite infestation caused by lice. The head louse (Pediculus humanus capitis) and body louse (Pediculus hum … ntal toxicity and minimal environmental residual activity. In this study, we focus on the essential oils derived from 22 plant genera, their constituents, and the major factors that play important roles in the effectiveness of these oils in the treatment of pediculosis. Furthermore, we discuss the advantages and limitations of the mentioned essential o …

Anti-inflammatory effects of essential oils from Mangifera indica.

Mangifera indica is widely found in Brazil, and its leaves are used as an anti-inflammatory agent in folk medicine. The aim of this study is to perform composition analysis of essential oils from the M. indica varieties, espada (EOMIL1) and coração de boi (EOMIL2), and confirm their anti-inflammatory properties. Twenty-three volatile compounds were identified via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in two essential oils from the leaves. Paw edema and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity were evaluated using the carrageenan-induced paw model, while leukocyte migration was analyzed using the …

Antimicrobial activity of essential oils against Staphylococcus aureus biofilms.

The present study was aimed to evaluate the potential of essential oils to remove the foodborne pathogen Staphylococcus aureus from food-processing facilities. The effectiveness of 19 essential oils against planktonic cells of S. aureus was firstly assessed by minimal inhibitory concentration. Planktonic cells showed a wide variability in resistance to essential oils, with thyme oil as the most effective, followed by lemongrass oil and then vetiver oil. The eight essential oils most effective against planktonic cells were subsequently tested against 48-h-old biofilms formed on stainless steel.…

In vitro antibacterial activity of some plant essential oils.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of 21 plant essential oils against six bacterial species. METHODS: The selected essential oils were screened against four gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris) and two gram-positive bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus at four different concentrations (1:1, 1:5, 1:10 and 1:20) using disc diffusion method. The MIC of the active essential oils were tested using two fold agar dilution method at concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 25.6 mg/ml. RESULTS: Out of 21 e…

Achyrocline satureioides essential oils from southern Brazil and Uruguay.

The essential oils of the aerial parts of Achyrocline satureioides (D.C.) Lam., a regional medicinal plant, from different collection locations in the South of Brazil and Uruguay were examined by GC and GC-MS. Monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were the main fractions of both the oils from Brazil and Uruguay. The oxygenated monoterpenes and sequiterpenes were at much lower percentage in both samples. The Uruguayan samples have 1,8-cineole which is not present in the Brazilian samples and has not been reported in other samples from Brazil. The results indicated a high biodiversity of th…

Antimicrobial activity of essential oils and other plant extracts.

The antimicrobial activity of plant oils and extracts has been recognized for many years. However, few investigations have compared large numbers of oils and extracts using methods that are directly comparable. In the present study, 52 plant oils and extracts were investigated for activity against Acinetobacter baumanii, Aeromonas veronii biogroup sobria, Candida albicans, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia col, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serotype typhimurium, Serratia marcescens and Staphylococcus aureus, using an agar dilution method. L…

Systemic toxicity of dermally applied crude oils in rats.

Two crude oils, differing in viscosity (V) and nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) content, were evaluated for systemic toxicity. In the Crude I (low V, low N, low S) study, the material was applied to the clipped backs of rats at dose levels of 0, 30, 125, and 500 mg/kg. In the Crude II (high V, high N, moderate S) study, the oil was applied similarly at the same dose levels. The crude oils were applied for 13 wk, 5 d/wk. Exposure sites were not occluded. Mean body weight gain (wk 1-14) was significantly reduced in male rats exposed to Crude II; body weight gain of all other animals was not adversely…

Solubility and reactivity of sulfur dioxide in various oils.

Physical-chemical interactions of SO2 and soluble particulate matter have been documented in the potentiation of acute respiratory effects in animals. The possible role of such interactions between SO2 and oils will be examined similarly. By a simple electrochemical technique, the solubility of SO2 in various oils (including motor oils) could be isolated from the chemical reactions. Except for the medicinal mineral oil, large differences in both solubility and reactivity were found among the oils. In these oils, far more SO2 reacted than dissolved.

Analysis of volatile organic compounds in Irish rapeseed oils.

In recent years, consumer demand for health benefitting, pleasant-tasting rapeseed oil has increased, and so has production. Ireland's climate and agricultural background can support the production of high-quality rapeseed oil. Volatile organic compounds (VOC) can give rise to highly distinctive flavours in rapeseed oils, produced during crop growth and generated during processing. This study performed VOC and sensory evaluation to determine if correlations exist. Samples of Irish rapeseed oils from 6 different producers were analysed. Compounds detected in the oil samples consisted of acids, …

Essential oils and cluster headache: insights from two cases.

Essential oils with proconvulsive properties are known to cause seizures and may worsen migraine. Here, we report two cases of cluster headache temporally related to the use of toothpastes containing essential oils of camphor and eucalyptus.
