Orthodontic procedures improving periodontal prognosis.

The wide range of interrelations between orthodontics and periodontology shows that besides the preventive significance in the mixed dentition, another focal point is the comprehensive rehabilitation of periodontally affected patients. With increasing experience in the field of adult orthodontics, setting therapeutic limits becomes increasingly difficult. It is impossible in principle to define in exact metric terms the probing depth or attachment loss up to which orthodontic tooth movement is feasible. The fact is rather that the orthodontic-periodontal treatment goal can be defined only afte

[Health relevance of malocclusions and their treatment].

Malocclusions are among the most common human diseases impairing oral health. The present paper gives an overview on their etiology, prevalence, and consequences. It further presents the corrective and preventive potential of orthodontic treatment and gives information on the treatment-associated legal framework in Germany. The use and quality of the orthodontic health service will be described in the international context. The etiology of malocclusions has genetic, epigenetic, functional, and environmental components, which can seldomly be differentiated on the individual level. Comparison of the Effectiveness of Fluoride Varnish and Fluoride-Releasing Adhesives in Preventing and Managing White Spot Lesions During Fixed Orthodontic Treatment, and Evaluation of Patient-Reported Outcomes: A Randomised Controlled Trial 1 Year After Debonding.

BACKGROUND: White spot lesions (WSL) may appear on teeth during fixed orthodontic treatment. Professionally administered topical fluorides play a key role in preventing such lesions. However, the evidence for their long-term efficacy and patient-reported outcomes is limited. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to evaluate the efficacy of topical fluorides (varnish vs. adhesive) in reducing the incidence of white spot lesions (WSLs) during and after 1 year of fixed orthodontic treatment. The secondary objectives were patient-related outcomes, including perception of WSLs and adverse effects o

Clinical Applications of Probiotics in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, scientific interest in probiotics in oral health has grown exponentially. This systematic review aims to analyze the effectiveness of probiotic use in dentistry, specifically in two areas: orthodontics and pediatric dentistry. METHODS: Forty studies (RCTs, systematic reviews, clinical and preclinical studies) published between 2001 and 2025 were selected from the literature (PubMed) to evaluate the impact of probiotics on clinical, microbiological, and patient-specific parameters. RESULTS: Results generally indicate that the most observed effect is the reduction

Orthodontic diagnosis in young children: beyond dental malocclusions.

Orthodontics is more than merely diagnosing and treating dental malocclusion. It also includes diagnosis and treatment of facial/skeletal problems, upper airway obstruction (mouth breathing), temporomandibular dysfunction, and abnormal myofunctional habits. These assessments should be made in all patients but especially in children as young as age 5 to take advantage of facial growth. If problems are diagnosed early and preventive measures are instituted, many facial and dental problems may be minimized or averted.

MGDS case presentation: hypodontia with retained deciduous teeth.

This case, which was presented as a log diary for the 1997 Diploma of Membership in General Dental Surgery (MGDS) examination, describes the examination, treatment planning, and subsequent treatment of a patient displaying mild hypodontia with retained deciduous teeth and lateral excursions guided by group function. It incorporates preventive treatment and management of early interproximal caries, prerestorative orthodontics, reorganisation to a canine-guided occlusion using conventional and adhesive cast restorations, and management of an occasional clenching habit.

[Guidance of tooth eruption in the support areas using proximal grinding].

This article brings a description of a procedure for interproximal slicing. When persistence of the second deciduous molar occurs, the premolar is likely to be blocked in his eruption, while the canine is guided out of the dental arch; in these conditions it might be necessary to perform a slicing mesially of the second deciduous molar. Beforehand one should check for the posterior tooth-size and eruption pattern or sequence of each quadrant.
