Heterotopic Ossification Following Arthroplasty for Femoral Neck Fracture.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a frequent complication following hip surgery. Using data from the Hip Fracture Evaluation with Alternatives of Total Hip Arthroplasty versus Hemiarthroplasty (HEALTH) trial, we aimed to (1) determine the prevalence of HO following total hip arthroplasty (THA) for femoral neck fracture in patients ≥50 years of age, (2) identify whether HO is associated with an increased risk of revision surgery within 24 months after the fracture, and (3) determine the impact of HO on functional outcomes. METHODS: We performed a multivariable Cox regression analysi

Heterotopic ossification formation after fractures about the elbow.

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a well-known sequela after an elbow injury and is widely studied given the associated morbidity. The anatomic location of HO development for specific elbow injuries has not been reported. The purpose of this study was to describe the precise, anatomic location of HO development after different peri-articular elbow injuries. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed for patients with peri-articular elbow fracture and/or dislocation who underwent an elbow contracture release. The injuries were grouped into coronal shear distal humerus/AO

Comparing Heterotopic Ossification in Two Cervical Disc Prostheses.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis using data from randomized clinical trials. OBJECTIVE: To compare the occurrence of heterotopic ossification (HO) between two cervical disc prostheses. Clinical outcome and range of motion (ROM) were also evaluated. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cervical arthroplasty was reported to be able to maintain the segmental ROM. However, controversy exists since the difference of the occurrence of HO concerning cervical prosthesis is still huge. METHODS: Patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy with arthroplasty for a cervical radiculopathy due to a her

A Rare Finding in Dupuytren's Disease - Heterotopic Ossification.

We present the case of a severe and long-standing Dupuytren's contracture where intraoperatively an ossified nodule was encountered within the diseased tissue. Histologically palmar fibromatosis in contact with cartilaginous tissue with central ossification could be confirmed, compatible with metaplasia. Our finding suggests that metaplastic activity inherent to longstanding, severely diseased Dupuytren's tissue can lead to heterotopic ossification.

'Bony' cubital tunnel syndrome caused by heterotopic ossification.

We reported a rare case of cubital tunnel syndrome caused by heterotopic ossification after burns. The ulnar nerve was encircled by bony tunnel structure which cause nerve compression, resulting in ulnar nerve lesion. Our case sheds light on possible etiological association which may help clinical management.

Heterotopic mesenteric ossification of ileostomy - "intraabdominal myositis ossificans".

UNLABELLED: Heterotopic mesenteric ossification is a rare clinical entity with less than 40 reported cases. Moreover, heterotopic mesenteric ossification around a stoma is described in fewer cases. CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old male patient, who underwent a sigmoidectomy two years ago for a sigmoid colon cancer, was admitted in our Department in order to be investigated for a local recurrence of his disease. Because of unresectable pelvic lesions, the patient was taken in the operating room for a palliative double barrel ileostomy. The patient presented two weeks after the ileostomy clini

Heterotopic Ossification: Basic-Science Principles and Clinical Correlates.

➤ Heterotopic ossification occurs most commonly after joint arthroplasty, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, blast trauma, elbow and acetabular fractures, and thermal injury.➤ The conversion of progenitor cells to osteogenic precursor cells as a result of cell-mediated interactions with the local tissue environment is affected by oxygen tension, pH, availability of micronutrients, and mechanical stimuli, and leads to heterotopic ossification.➤ Radiation and certain nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications are important methods of prophylaxis against heterotopic ossification.➤ Well-p

Osteoblasts Have a Neural Origin in Heterotopic Ossification.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the process of bone formation at a nonskeletal site. Recently, we showed that the earliest steps occur in sensory nerves. We now extend these studies by identifying unique osteogenic progenitors within the endoneurial compartment of sensory nerves. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We asked: (1) What is the nature of the osteoprogenitor in the endoneurium of peripheral nerves? (2) How do osteoprogenitors travel from the nerve to the site of new bone formation? METHODS: HO was induced by intramuscular injection of Ad5BMP-2-transduced cells in mice. Osteoprogenit

Extensive heterotopic ossification in patient with tubercular meningitis.

Tubercular meningitis is a severe form of central nervous system tuberculosis with high morbidity and mortality. Apart from neurological deficits, musculoskeletal involvement is also seen in very few cases in the form of heterotopic ossification around immobile joints. A 35-year-old male case of tubercular meningitis with left hemiparesis presented with multiple joint restriction of range of motion. On clinical examination, palpable firm masses around multiple joints with painful restriction of movements were seen. X-ray films of multiple joints revealed heterotopic ossification over left shou

The incidence of heterotopic ossification after hip arthroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive techniques to treat femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), snapping hip syndrome, and peritrochanteric space disorder (PSD) were developed to reduce complications and recovery time. Although a multitude of studies have reported on the incidence of heterotopic ossification (HO) after open procedures of the hip, there is little known about the rate of HO after hip arthroscopy. HYPOTHESES: The incidence of HO after hip arthroscopy is comparable with that after open surgical dislocation of the hip and can be reduced with the addition of indomethacin to an existing nons

Experimental model of heterotopic ossification in Wistar rats.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a metaplastic biological process in which there is newly formed bone in soft tissues adjacent to large joints, resulting in joint mobility deficit. In order to determine which treatment techniques are more appropriate for such condition, experimental models of induced heterotopic bone formation have been proposed using heterologous demineralized bone matrix implants and bone morphogenetic protein and other tissues. The objective of the present experimental study was to identify a reliable protocol to induce HO in Wistar rats, based on autologous bone marrow (BM

Heterotopic ossification after minimally invasive rotator cuff repair.

Heterotopic ossification is a common phenomenon after spinal cord injury, head injury, neurologic disorders, burns and other trauma, and joint arthroplasty. Periarticular ossifications after shoulder surgery have been known to occur since the 19th century, at an incidence of up to 27%. After arthroscopic and minimally invasive shoulder surgical procedures were introduced and came into broad use, reports about heterotopic ossification became very rare. We describe here a case of heterotopic bone formation in the subdeltoid fascia after arthroscopic subacromial decompression, acromioclavicular j

Heterotopic ossification revisited: a 21-year surgical experience.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is an infrequently encountered complication of a burn. A retrospective review was undertaken to evaluate our treatment and results. Forty-two patients were identified with HO during 21 yrs. Mean age was 38 yrs. Mean total body surface area and third-degree burn were 55% and 37%, respectively. The elbow was the most frequent site (>90%), and 44% were bilateral. The next most common sites were shoulder, hip, knee, and forearm. Greater than 90% of patients had ventilator support and intensive care unit length of stay 58 and 79 days, respectively. HO was first suspect

Heterotopic ossification after hip surgery in cerebral palsy.

Heterotopic ossification is a post-surgery complication occasionally observed in patients with infantile cerebral palsy. In the majority of the cases such lesions are found at the hip after surgery on the skeleton and the soft tissues. At our Institute in the last five years, this complication has been observed four times, in 39 patients, who underwent mainly soft tissue releases because of flexion and adduction contracture of the hip. In these cases, as in a further patient with myelomeningocele, the periarticular heterotopic ossification appeared in the hip after tenotomy of the ilio-psoas a

Heterotopic ossification after acromioplasty and distal clavicle resection.

A retrospective review of acromioplasty and distal clavicle resections disclosed 40 cases in which postoperative ectopic bone formation caused recurrent shoulder impingement or acromioclavicular joint pain. Symptomatic lesions either encroached on the supraspinatus outlet or were located in the acromioclavicular interval and were large in size. The incidence of symptomatic heterotopic ossification occurring after acromioplasty or distal clavicle excision was 3.2% and was disproportionately seen in patients with chronic pulmonary diseases (p < 0.05). Heterotopic bone formation could not be corr

Ketorolac prophylaxis against heterotopic ossification after hip replacement.

Three hundred three patients undergoing total hip replacement were enrolled in a prospective, randomized, double-blind clinical study of heterotopic bone formation. All the procedures were primary arthroplasties done for osteoarthritis using an anterolateral approach. Patients with spondyloarthropathy, previous surgery, or previous head or pelvic trauma were excluded. A total of 152 patients received 60 mg of ketorolac intraoperatively and 30 mg every 8 hours for 5 doses postoperatively; another 151 patients received no prophylaxis for heterotopic bone formation. Patients in each group had sim

[Traumatic myositis ossificans. Posttraumatic non-neoplastic heterotopic ossification].

Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is a nonneoplastic, heterotopic ossification of soft tissues i.e. skeletal muscle, tendons, aponeuroses and fascia. It is often encountered in young male athletes participating in contact sports as a result of a single or repeated contusion. MOT tends to be solitary, localized and well circumscribed with a self-limited growth potential that may culminate in regression. The pathogenesis of MOT is still enigmatic. Recent animal experiments have led to a theory that mesenchymal connective tissue cells, undergo metaplasia induced by trauma and probably osteogen

Heterotopic ossification in a finger following head injury.

A case of digital periarticular heterotopic ossification is described. Such cases are extremely rare and diagnosis may be delayed. Spasticity, possibly in association with minor trauma, may contribute to the development of the process. Little experience exists of the management of such problems and a mobile joint may be difficult to achieve.
