Cervical instability as an unusual manifestation of Hajdu-Cheney syndrome of acroosteolysis.

Acroosteolysis is a disease that primarily affects distal areas of extremities, with osteolysis involving the phalanges of the hand most commonly reported. Some authors have noted acroosteolysis to be acquired secondarily to the initiation of an immune complex disease that results in the vascular occlusion of the small arteries of the hand. Although the pathoetiology is unknown, the Hajdu-Cheney syndrome of idiopathic acroosteolysis is distinct from the other forms because a generalized skeletal dysplasia is the most distinct feature, and it is usually not present in early childhood. The purpo

Lymphatic Anomalies in Children: Update on Imaging Diagnosis, Genetics, and Treatment.

Lymphatic anomalies comprise a spectrum of disorders ranging from common localized microcystic and macrocystic lymphatic malformations (LMs) to rare complex lymphatic anomalies, including generalized lymphatic anomaly, Kaposiform lymph-angiomatosis, central conducting lymphatic anomaly, and Gorham-Stout disease. Imaging diagnosis of cystic LMs is generally straightforward, but complex lymphatic anomalies, particularly those with multiorgan involvement or diffuse disease, may be more challenging to diagnose. Complex lymphatic anomalies are rare but associated with high morbidity. Imaging plays

Gorham-Stout Disease Resulting in Spinal Deformity Treated by Fusion Surgery Combined With Everolimus Therapy: A Case Report.

CASE: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disorder characterized by progressive localized osteolysis and lymphatic malformation. A 26-year-old woman with GSD presented to our hospital with a Cobb angle of 100° and a kyphosis angle of 88°. Everolimus therapy was initiated to control the disease prior to surgery. After halo-gravity traction for 4 weeks, we performed anterior and posterior spinal fusion. Postoperative computed tomography revealed satisfactory bone union and no significant loss of correction 1 year post-surgery. CONCLUSION: This case suggests that anterior and posterior spinal f

A rare case of Gorham-stout syndrome involving the thoracic spine with progressive bilateral chylothorax: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Gorham-Stout syndrome (GSS) with spinal involvement is extremely rare, and bilateral chylothorax as a complication is usually fatal. In our case, pleural effusion appeared in the left hemithorax after ligating the right thoracic duct. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old patient presented with GSS affecting the thoracic spine with bilateral chylothorax. The case was successfully managed using combined conservative and surgical treatments. At the 2-year follow-up visit, the amount of pleural fluid was reduced, the patient's respiratory function had improved, and the deformity on the th

[Management of postoperative complications in cases of Gorham's disease with cervical spine involvement: A case report].

Gorham's disease is a rare osteolytic bone disease, caused by pathological vascular tissue, which may spread to adjacent organs. It is a disease of unknown etiology, primarily involving the axial skeleton and whose treatment is not codified. Cervical spine involvement is unusual. Stabilization of the cervical spine is a real surgical challenge. We report the case of a young adult treated in our neurosurgery department for a cervical spine localization of Gorham's disease.

[Lymphangiomatosis and Gorham-Stout disease].

Lymphangiomatosis (recently renamed "generalized lymphatic anomaly") is a rare disease of unknown etiology that features an increase in the number of lymphatic vessels in many different tissues. Gorham-Stout disease(GSD) is a related disease characterized by lymphatic vessels involving the bones and resulting in progressive bone destruction. Respective definitions remain unclear because these conditions largely overlap in the clinical setting and are both associated with pleural effusion and other visceral lesions. These two conditions have recently been differentiated based on imaging finding

Intercalary bone grafting for the reconstruction of phalangeal osteolysis in disappearing bone disease: case report.

Disappearing bone disease (DBD) is a rare condition of unknown etiology that may cause massive hand deformity due to severe osteolysis and soft-tissue atrophy. Bone grafting of the affected metacarpal bones or wrist has been described with moderate success in only 4 cases, but phalanx reconstruction has not been attempted. We report a case with multicentric DBD that was treated with staged intercalary iliac bone grafting of the phalanges of the dominant thumb and index finger. After 3 years, no graft resorption was noticed and the patient reported considerable functional improvement.

Gorham stout disease in pregnancy.

Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare disorder characterized by spontaneous and progressive bone resorption. Its clinical presentation varies from unremarkable to life-threatening, making diagnosis and treatment challenging. Despite extensive research, no definitive correlations have been established between GSD and age, gender, race, or environmental and infectious risk factors. A 32-year-old woman with GSD presented during her second pregnancy, experiencing gingival mass recurrence after 20 years. Biopsy revealed pyogenic granuloma, leading to 20 cycles of radiotherapy with no disease progres

Treatment for Gorham-Stout syndrome with a combination of teriparatide and denosumab.

Gorham-Stout syndrome is an aggressive, non-hereditary, and rare disease affecting bone metabolism. Its etiology and pathogenesis remain elusive. The syndrome manifests with diverse clinical symptoms, often leading to frequent misdiagnoses and presenting challenges in treatment. In this study, we report a case of cranial and maxillary osteolysis in a 47-year-old female patient with somatic mutations in the VEGF-A, VEGF-B, and VEGF-C genes and the EPHB4 gene. After treatment with bisphosphonates, this patient still had persistent resorption of the mandible, but switching to a teriparatide and d

Gorham-Stout disease of skull base leading to cranial settling and rhinorrhea: a case-based review.

PURPOSE: Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) is a rare progressive osteolytic disorder, theoretically caused by lymphovascular endothelial proliferation. Spinal involvement carries a dismal prognosis because of neurological consequences. Lesions of the skull base are extremely rare and entail even more devastating prognosis due to cervical instability and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage. Due to scarcity of this condition, the aim of this study was to give an overview of skull base GSD and review the cases with such condition reported in the literature. METHODS: In this case-based review, different a

A Child with Early-Onset Gorham-Stout Disease Complicated by Chylothorax: Near-Complete Regression of Bone Lesions with Interferon and Bisphosphonate Treatment.

We report a case of Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) complicated by chylothorax and treated with a combination therapy with interferon and bisphosphonates. This treatment may be helpful in improving the usually unfavorable prognosis of GSD beginning with a chylothorax before 1 year of age, and in reducing bone lesions. Moreover, the use of bisphosphonates appears to be useful in treating pain.

Gorham's disease: an osseous disease of lymphangiogenesis?

Gorham's disease, also known as massive osteolysis, Gorham-Stout disease, vanishing bone disease, or, phantom bone disease is a rare disorder of the musculoskeletal system. The disease is characterized by osteolysis in bony segments, with localized proliferation of lymphatic channels. The presence of abundant, leaky systemic lymphatic vessels is often accompanied by chylous ascites. There is no standardized treatment available for Gorham's disease, and its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Future strategies for understanding Gorham's disease should emphasize its apparent identity as a disea
