Oronasal fistula post-septoplasty.

Nasal septal surgery is one of the most common otolaryngology procedures performed, with rare occurrences of major postoperative complications. Oronasal fistula is a rare complication of septal surgery, with only few cases being reported in the literature. It is commonly caused by a congenital cleft palate, cleft palate surgery, traumatic injuries, infections, or neoplasms; however, it does not usually occur post-septal surgery. Here, we report the case of a 55-year-old male who presented with a symptomatic oronasal fistula post-septoplasty. Unlike other reported cases, there were no features

Fibrolipoma associated with a mucus retention cyst in the palate: a case report.

Fibrolipomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms of the fatty tissue rarely encountered in the oral cavity. They account for around 1% to 5% of all neoplasms affecting the mouth and occur as raised, slow-growing, painless lesions of normal or yellow coloration and uncertain etiology. In contrast, mucus retention cysts are epithelium-lined cavities originated from a salivary gland. They are also raised, asymptomatic, slow-growing lesions, located on the floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa and lips. This article reports a diagnostic and a surgical treatment of a rare fibrolipoma case associated with

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the hard palate presenting as ipsilateral sixth nerve palsy.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is an uncommon malignant neoplasm composed of basaloid epithelial and myoepithelial cells. The palate is the most commonly involved intraoral site for ACC. Here, we document the case of an advanced ACC arising from the hard palate that presented with right-sided sixth nerve palsy in a 75-year-old male with no other systemic illnesses. ACC of the head and neck involving the cavernous sinus and presenting as isolated sixth nerve palsy is exceedingly rare. In the absence of vasculopathic or ischemic risk factors, regardless of the age of the patient; neuroimaging sh

Solitary fibrous tumor of the soft palate: A report of two cases.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are a unique group of mesenchymal neoplasms of fibroblastic or myofibroblastic origin and are extremely rare in the oral cavity. The present study reported two additional cases of SFTs in the soft palate, along with the computed tomography characteristics, which demonstrated well-circumscribed soft tissue lesions with marked and homogenous enhancement. Following wide resection, one of the cases showed certain malignant pathological characteristics, including infiltration of mucinous gland, hypercellularity, nuclear atypia and weak positive staining for S-100. Mammaglobin protein localization and gene expression in the salivary glands.

PURPOSE: This study aims to delve deeper into the hypothesis that normal salivary gland tissue expresses both protein and mRNA of mammaglobin (MGB). METHODS: Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples of submandibular (10), parotid (5), palatal (5) and labial glands (30) salivary glands were immunohistochemically investigated. The labial samples were used to examine the MGB positive ratio (MGB-PR), and localize MGB by double immunofluorescence staining and quantitative mRNA gene expression. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis rank-sum test for group comparison, and Spearman's rank correlation coe

Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma of the Maxilla Arising From Minor Salivary Glands of Hard Palate: A Rare Case Report.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of salivary glands. It is specifically found in the major salivary glands. The cases that emerge from minor salivary glands are rarely described. Histologically, it commonly exhibits a characteristic biphasic pattern consisting of epithelial and myoepithelial components. The histopathological resemblance to other benign and malignant neoplasms that also display myoepithelial characteristics makes the differential diagnosis challenging. Each differential diagnosis requires a very different management approach. Considering the diffi

[A Case of Malignant Melanoma of the Left Palate].

Malignant melanoma is a rare and highly aggressive neoplasm originating from melanocytes, typically occurring on the skin and exhibiting early lymphatic and hematogenous metastases. Despite advancements in chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy, a definitive standard treatment has yet to be established;surgical excision remains the most effective modality. We present a case of primary malignant melanoma of the left palate. A 64-year-old man was referred to our department with a chief complaint of a black pigmented lesion on the palate. Clinical examination revealed a 20×25 mm exophytic

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the head and neck in patients with AIDS.

The clinical and histologic features of five homosexual men with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who developed extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas of the head and neck region are presented. The primary sites of these malignant neoplasms include the larynx, palate, alveolar ridge, nasal vestibule, and skin overlying the mastoid tip. In all cases, the patients' lymphomas followed an aggressive clinical course with frequent central nervous system involvement. Although, to our knowledge, this is the first report of head and neck lymphomas in patients with AIDS, this malignant neoplasm has

Myoepithelial carcinoma of palate: case report.

Myoepithelial carcinoma is an uncommon malignant salivary gland neoplasm with a predilection for parotid gland. However, its occurrence in minor salivary glands is considerably less with only 28 cases being reported in the literature. We report a case of myoepithelial carcinoma of palate in a 50-year-old woman. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an extensive lesion in the palate. Microscopically, the tumor exhibited a wide spectrum of cytomorphologic features that overlap with other salivary gland tumors. Immunohistochemistry served as an adjunct in the diagnosis of th

Oral Malignant Melanoma: A Case Report.

Melanoma is a malignant neoplasm of the epidermal melanocytes. Awareness and early recognition of pigmented lesion inside oral cavity helps in initial diagnosis and further investigation and treatment. Oral malignant melanoma is a rare aggressive neoplasm commonly seen among middle age. The diagnosis of melanoma initiates from the pre-existing pigmented lesions. The poor prognosis of oral melanomas requires that pigmented lesions of undetermined origin be routinely biopsied. A case of malignant melanoma of hard palate with its clinical, radiological and histopathological presentation along wit

Acinic cell carcinoma of the posterior buccal mucosa: A rare case report.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasm that comprises approximately 17% of primary salivary gland malignancies or about 6% of all salivary gland neoplasms. The most common intraoral sites are the buccal mucosa, lips, and palate. The diagnosis of ACC frequently presents difficulties, owing to its great radiological and cytological similarity with benign tumors and with normal acinar component of the salivary gland, respectively. The management of ACC consists of complete surgical excision. Here, we report a case of ACC on the left retromolar trigone, a rare

Pleomorphic Adenoma in Retromolar Area: A Very Rare Case Report and Review of Literature.

Among all neoplasms affecting head and neck region, salivary gland neoplasms are rare. Pleomorphic adenomas are the most common benign salivary gland tumours making up to 50% of major and minor salivary gland tumours. Intraorally pleomorphic adenoma is mostly found on palate and lips and very rarely in retromolar area. Here we are reporting a rare case of pleomorphic adenoma in right lower retromolar area in a 31-year-old female, the lesion was excised in toto with safety margins under local anaesthesia and postoperative follow up after six months didn't showed any recurrence.

Hidden colon adenocarcinoma diagnosed from mouth metastasis: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: We report an unusual case of metastatic colon adenocarcinoma to the maxilla as an initial clinical sign of the disease, this being the second case reported in the palate. In addition, we show an extensive review of the literature, with clinical cases of adenocarcinoma with metastasis to the mouth. CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old man complained of "swelling on the palate" with a 3-week evolution time. He reported suffering from constipation and high blood pressure. The intraoral examination revealed a pedunculated, red, and painless nodule on the maxillary gingiva. Under the diag

Molecular profile of a pleomorphic adenoma of the hard palate: A case report.

RATIONALE: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor of salivary glands. PAs have the potential for regional and distant metastases that preserve their benign phenotype; they also have the potential for malignant transformation. The molecular pathogenesis of malignant neoplasms has been studied extensively in recent years, unlike that of benign tumors, such as PA. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this case report, we identified the molecular signatures of a 57-year-old Japanese woman. Our patient presented with a swelling of the hard palate with an erosive appearance. DIAGNOSES: The patie

[Oral cavity and oropharyngeal carcinomas in the materials of the University of Medical Science, ENT Department, in Poznan, in years 1980-1999].

624 patients with malignant neoplasms of the mouth and the oropharynx treated in the ENT Department K. Marcinkowski University of Medical Sciences in Poznań between 1980 and 1999 were analysed. Since the middle of the 90-ies a rapid increase of neoplasms incidence of this location has been observed. The most numerous group were tumours of the palatine tonsil (34.8%), tongue (32.5%), floor of the mouth (5.9%), soft palate (5.3%). Advanced neoplasms which encompassed the tongue, oropharynx, mouth floor base was observed in 134 patients (21.5%). The precise definition of their site of origin prim

Oral and oropharyngeal lymphomas: A multi-institutional collaborative study.

BACKGROUND: Lymphomas in the oral and oropharyngeal regions are relatively uncommon, and their diagnosis is challenging and complex due to the myriad histopathological subtypes. Herein, we report a large series of oral and oropharyngeal lymphomas and compare our data with the currently available literature. METHODS: All cases diagnosed as lymphomas affecting the oral and oropharyngeal regions were retrospectively retrieved from seven Brazilian institutions. Clinicodemographic data and histopathological features were evaluated and described, while a comprehensive literature review was undertak

Decoding myoepithelioma: Highlighting diagnostic dilemmas through a series of rare cases.

Myoepitheliomas are exceedingly rare neoplasms of the salivary glands. Minor salivary gland neoplasms most frequently occur in the palate (hard palate), followed by the lips, oral mucosa, and tongue/floor of the mouth. Additionally, less prevalent locations encompass the retromolar area, pharynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and larynx. The lack of distinctive cytologic features and bland morphology in both benign and malignant myoepitheliomas necessitates the use of histopathology and immunohistochemistry for accurate diagnosis. Hence, here, we report a series of three cases, including tw

Oral squamous cell carcinoma in a pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina).

An adult, gravid, female pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) presented for facial swelling centered on the left mandible that was approximately 5 cm wide. Differential diagnoses included infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic origins. Definitive antemortem diagnosis was not possible, and the macaque's condition worsened despite supportive care. Necropsy findings included a mandibular mass that was locally invasive and expansile, encompassing approximately 80% of the left mandibular bone. The mass replaced portions of the soft palate, hard palate, sinuses, ear canal, and the caudal-rostral

Plexiform (multinodular) schwannoma of soft palate. Report of a case.

Plexiform schwannoma is a rare benign neoplasm of the neural sheath characterized by a multinodular plexiform growth pattern. Only 5% of schwannomas have a plexiform or multinodular growth pattern. Schwannoma apparently derives from the Schwann cells. Extracranially, 25% of all schwannomas are located in the head and neck region, but only 1% show an intraoral origin. The intraoral lesions show a predilection for the tongue, followed by the palate, buccal mucosa, lip and gingival. Microscopic examination is necessary to confirm the diagnosis. Characteristic histological signs are the palisading

[Myoepithelioma of palate--case report].

Authors present a case of 12 year old boy and describe clinical and pathologic features of myoepithelioma originating from the soft palate. Neoplastic cells with myoepithelial differentiation are fairly common in salivary glands tumors. However, bening salivary gland neoplasms composed exclusively of myoepithelial cells are rare; they account for fewer then 1%.
