A patient with necrotizing sialometaplasia of the hard palate was treated with wide resection on a biopsy diagnosis of carcinoma. The literature on this recently identified entity is reviewed and the characteristic clinical features, histopathology and ultrastructure are summarized. To the best of our knowledge, no ultrastructural study concerning this entity has been previously reported. Unless recognized early, an extensive resection might be done needlessly.

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate is twice as frequent among Indians of British Columbia as among non-Indians, although the reverse is the case whenever we consider isolated cleft palate. A family is described with 12 affected males. Close examination of this family revealed that the most likely explanation for the cleft palate was an X-linked recessive gene. It is concluded that isolated cleft palate among the Indians of British Columbia is an extremely rare anomaly.

BACKGROUND: The excision of oropharyngeal carcinoma of more than 50% of the soft palate followed by static reconstruction may result in functional deficits, including velopharyngeal insufficiency, swallowing, and speech difficulties. We describe a functional soft palate reconstruction technique aimed at restoring aeromechanical and acoustic functions, enabling swallowing without nasal regurgitation and speech with low nasalance.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We developed a new operative technique, using muscle transfer and a free flap to create a dynamic reconstruction. To prove the distinct nerve in…

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) as a dislocation malformation confronts parents with a malformation of their child that could not be more central and visible: the face. In addition to the stigmatizing appearance, however, in cases of a CLP, food intake, physiological breathing, speech and hearing are also affected. In this paper, the principles of morphofunctional surgical reconstruction of the cleft palate are presented. With the closure of the palate, and restoration of the anatomy, a situation is achieved enabling nasal respiration, normal or near normal speech without nasality, improved ventila…

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) represents a group of malformations of unknown etiology but similar phenotypes. This implies consequences for the diagnostics, therapy, prevention, prognosis and risk estimation.
OBJECTIVE: Definition of CLP subtypes and the embryonic development, clarification of correlations and differences between entities using epidemiological data, overview of the present state of genetic analyses, correlation to syndromes, sequences and associations and resulting consequences for clinical practice.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Update on embryological development of the f…

OBJECTIVE: Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) in the palate are very rare. We aimed to investigate the CT appearance of lymphoma in the palate to improve diagnostic quality and review the literature on NHL.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study retrospectively included patients with histopathologically confirmed lymphoma who were treated at our hospital between 2008 and 2015. We examined CT features, including tumor location, appearance, margins, and involvement of the surrounding tissues.
RESULTS: Records were available for eight cases of lymphoma over the study period. Of these, two were in the soft p…

Malignant myoepithelioma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm, which accounts for less than 2% of all the salivary gland carcinomas. Majority of cases have been reported in parotid, and only 8 cases of involvement of the hard palate have been reported in the literature so far. Hereby, a case of painless, ulcerated palatal mass of 2 years of duration reported. A diagnosis of malignant plasmacytoid myoepithelioma was made with the aid of immunohistochemical analysis, and wide surgical excision was considered keeping in mind the biological behavior of the tumor.

A patient with the unusual coexistence of distichiasis and cleft palate is described. Distichiasis is a rare congenital eyelid anomaly in which accessory eyelashes are present in the meibomian gland orifices. Its association with other systemic abnormalities is reviewed; the distinctions among distichiasis, trichiasis, entropion, and epiblepharon are outlined; and methods of treatment for distichiasis are described.
