Biosynthetically inspired manipulation of the antibiotic paromomycin led, in six high-yielding steps, to a ring A harboring an α,β-unsaturated 6'-aldehyde and an allylic 3'-methylcarbonate group. Tsuji deoxygenation in the presence of 5 mol % Pd(2)(dba)(3) and Bu(3)P granted access to a novel series of 3',4'-dideoxy-4',5'-dehydro ring A hybrids. The neomycin-sisomicin hybrid exhibited superior in vitro antibacterial activity to the parent compound neomycin.

Two cases of sarcoidal-type allergic contact granuloma due to metals in ear piercing are presented, the first to palladium (Pd) only, and the second to Pd and possibly also to other metals. Both the patients developed papulonodular lesions at the helices following ear piercing, which after 3-4 weeks, became more granulomatous and very resistant to treatment. A study of the prevalence of allergic patch test reactions to palladium chloride compared to nickel sulfate was performed in a group of Finnish schoolchildren. Thermochemical hydrogenation of crude oil is a key step in biofuel production. This process is CO2-intensive because (i) H2 is derived from fossil fuels, and (ii) the reactions require high temperatures and pressures. A novel method is proposed for the solvent extraction of palladium. A superamolecular compound, hexaacetato calix(6)arene in low concentration in toluene quantitatively extracts microgram concentration of palladium at pH 7.5. It can be stripped from the organic phase with 2 M nitric acid and determined spectrophotometrically as its stannous chloride complex at 635 nm. We report a patient with contact stomatitis due to combined sensitization to palladium and platinum. Patch testing showed strong and persistent allergic patch test reactions to palladium chloride (1% pet.), ammonium tetrachloroplatinate (0.25% pet.), and a palladium metal plate. A platinum metal plate showed a weaker reaction. Histological examination of a biopsy from the test site of palladium chloride (1% pet.) at D3 showed both eczematous and lichenoid changes.

We describe herein a palladium-catalyzed carbonylative route for preparing substituted lactones from aliphatic bromoalcohols. This exploits the ability of photoexcited palladium catalysts to activate C(sp3)-bromides in concert with irreversible thermal reductive elimination to access substituted five-membered lactones under mild conditions, from available reagents, and where regioselectivity is defined by the substrate.

The selective semihydrogenation of alkynes is a critical industrial process, yet conventional palladium-based methods often suffer from overhydrogenation, leading to poor alkene selectivity.
