The role of event understanding in guiding attentional selection in real-world scenes: The Scene Perception & Event Comprehension Theory (SPECT).

Your understanding of what you see now surely influences what you will look at next. Yet this simple concept has only recently begun to be systematically studied and elaborated within theoretical frameworks. The Scene Perception & Event Comprehension Theory (SPECT) distinguishes between front-end and back-end processes that occur while viewers perceive and comprehend dynamic real-world events. Front-end processes occur during each eye fixation (information extraction, attentional selection) and back-end processes occur in memory (the current event model, the stored event model, prior knowledge

Moving a Shape behind a Slit: Partial Shape Representations in Inferior Temporal Cortex.

Current models of object recognition are based on spatial representations build from object features that are simultaneously present in the retinal image. However, one can recognize an object when it moves behind a static occlude, and only a small fragment of its shape is visible through a slit at a given moment in time. Such anorthoscopic perception requires spatiotemporal integration of the successively presented shape parts during slit-viewing. Human fMRI studies suggested that ventral visual stream areas represent whole shapes formed through temporal integration during anorthoscopic percep

The function of efference copy signals: implications for symptoms of schizophrenia.

Efference copy signals are used to reduce cognitive load by decreasing sensory processing of reafferent information (those incoming sensory signals that are produced by an organism's own motor output). Attenuated sensory processing of self-generated afferents is seen across species and in multiple sensory systems involving many different neural structures and circuits including both cortical and subcortical structures with thalamic nuclei playing a particularly important role. It has been proposed that the failure to disambiguate self-induced from externally generated sensory input may cause s

The barista on the bus: cellular and synaptic mechanisms for visual recognition memory.

Our ability to recognize that something is familiar, often referred to as visual recognition memory, has been correlated with a reduction in neural activity in the perirhinal cortex. In this issue of Neuron, Griffiths et al. now provide evidence that this form of memory requires AMPA receptor endocytosis and long-term depression of excitatory synapses in this brain area.

Learning how: A "mindless" procedure alone gives rise to contextual cueing-A weakly supervised connectionist model of statistical context learning in visual search.

Because our environment is not random, it is beneficial to assimilate the statistics of sensory impressions and improve performance, such as visual search for a target object in a cluttered array of nontarget objects (contextual cueing [CC] effect). Computational models of CC have so far focused on predicting the target location from a particular configuration of nontarget items. This contrasts with recent findings according to which display repetitions train human participants' general procedures for the search task. Here, we test the latter idea by employing a connectionist model of visual s

Topological structure and the creation of visual complexity.

What does it mean for something to be complex? Fundamentally, complexity is a cue that something is less easily represented by our minds. With this fact in view, complexity becomes a tool: By understanding the factors that lead to various impressions of complexity of a given object, we can effectively "reverse engineer" the underlying form of the mental representation of that object. Here, we use this tool to explore the ways that topological structure relates to perceived complexity - and, thus, whether, or in what way, topological structure may be part of the representation of objects. In tw

Influence of a twofold voluntary hyperventilation on visually evoked cortical potentials and human pupillogram.

We studied the direct and aftereffects of twofold hyperventilation (HV) on pattern reversing VEPs and pupillograms (PGs) of 19 healthy volunteers. The VEP-N80 and P100 latencies increased during HV. Both peak times were maintained for a longer period, up to 20 minutes after HV-2 ended. In addition, the PG-latency time during HV and the PG-construction time during and after HV were increased. The results indicated a temporary delay of neural afferent transmission in the visual system during and after HV. A similar delay of the nervous transmission appeared in the efferent part of the system reg

Transient visually evoked potentials to sinusoidal gratings in optic neuritis.

Transient visually evoked potentials (VEPs) to sinusoidal gratings over a range of spatial frequencies have been recorded in cases of optic neuritis. The use of the response to pattern onset in addition to the response to pattern reversal extended the range to higher spatial frequencies by up to two octaves. There was an increase in VEP delay and a greater degree of discrimination from a control group at higher spatial frequencies. This finding is discussed in the light of previous reports of luminance and checkerboard VEPs in demyelinating optic nerve disease. An attempt is made to relate amp

The SPOT Grid: Naturalistic images with predefined settings, patterns, objects, and textures.

In the natural world, higher-level visual features (e.g., scenes and objects) systematically covary with specific lower-level constituent features (e.g., textures and patterns). This natural covariation makes it difficult to isolate aspects of behavior or brain activity that are specific to a single level of the feature hierarchy. For example, a particular neural or behavioral response may reflect recognition of a "jungle" scene, or it may reflect sensitivity to the lower-level features - leaf textures, dense vertical lines, etc. - that constitute jungle scenes. To address this challenge, we d

Beware bisection: the direction of time-numerosity interactions depends on objective reference.

In time perception studies, one of the most commonly employed tasks across humans and animals is temporal bisection. In this task, subjects must classify intervals presented into "short" and "long" duration categories. Crucially, this classification can be done either in reference to explicitly learned "anchors", or in a "reference-free" mode in which no anchors are provided and the subject must use an implicit standard - the so-called "partition variant". Previous work has demonstrated identical performance and modeling between the anchored and partition variants leading to the conclusion tha

Effect of eccentric fixation on the steady-state pattern electroretinogram.

PURPOSE: The steady-state pattern electroretinogram (ssPERG) is used to assess retinal ganglion cell function in a variety of research contexts and diagnostic applications. In certain groups of patients or study participants, stable central fixation of the stimulus is not guaranteed. The present study aimed at assessing the effects of misfixation on the ssPERG response to checkerboard reversal stimuli. METHODS: Using two check sizes (0.8° and 15°), we compared ssPERG responses for several amounts of fixation deviation, ranging from 0° to 19° horizontally and from 0° to 14° diagonally. The sti

From pixels to perception: A benchmark for human-like symmetry detection.

Symmetry, a fundamental concept in nature, science and art, has challenged computer vision researchers because it occurs in various forms and human symmetry perception can deviate from the mathematical definition. Previous symmetry detection datasets are limited by the number of annotators and by missing the nuances of human perception. We introduce PIX2PER, a novel dataset for reflection symmetry in natural scenes and artworks. We also introduce WF1, a modified version of the widely-used F1 detection performance score, by adding weights to precision and recall to accommodate for the perceived

No stone unturned: Prevalence effects in interactive search are different than those in visual search.

When carrying out a search for a target object, manipulation with the environment may be required to successfully detect the target. These searches are known as interactive searches. Many real-life examples of interactive search involve searching for targets that are unlikely to be present or are said to have low target prevalence. To date, the effects of low target prevalence upon interactive search behaviors remain unclear. We conducted two experiments to examine search exhaustiveness in interactive search, focusing on whether searchers were less exhaustive when prevalence was low, primarily

Multiscale structural complexity as a quantitative measure of visual complexity.

While intuitive for humans, the concept of visual complexity is hard to define and quantify formally. We suggest adopting the multiscale structural complexity (MSSC) measure, an approach that defines structural complexity of an object as the amount of dissimilarities between distinct scales in its hierarchical organization. In this work, we apply MSSC to the case of visual stimuli, using an open dataset of images with subjective complexity scores obtained from human participants (SAVOIAS). We demonstrate that MSSC correlates with subjective complexity on par with other computational complexity

Performance and confusion effects for gist perception of scenes: An investigation of expertise, viewpoint and image categories.

Human object recognition often exhibits viewpoint invariance. However, unfamiliar aerial viewpoints pose challenges because diagnostic features are often obscured. Here, we investigated the gist perception of scenes when viewed from above and at the ground level, comparing novices against remote sensing surveyors with expertise in aerial photogrammetry. In a randomly interleaved single-interval, 14-choice design, briefly presented target images were followed by a backward white-noise mask. The targets and choices were selected from seven natural and seven man-made categories. Performance acros

Recurrent connectivity supports higher-level visual and semantic object representations in the brain.

Visual object recognition has been traditionally conceptualised as a predominantly feedforward process through the ventral visual pathway. While feedforward artificial neural networks (ANNs) can achieve human-level classification on some image-labelling tasks, it's unclear whether computational models of vision alone can accurately capture the evolving spatiotemporal neural dynamics. Here, we probe these dynamics using a combination of representational similarity and connectivity analyses of fMRI and MEG data recorded during the recognition of familiar, unambiguous objects. Modelling the visua

A case of quasi-infinite visual acuity and illusory size.

In certain real-life situations, moiré patterns can enhance the observer's ability to resolve fine spatial detail of solid structures, theoretically to unlimited degrees. An example of such a situation can be seen in traffic signs on the M25 motorway around London. Moreover, owing to the interferential nature of the moiré pattern, its angular physical size is independent of observer distance, and thus creates an apparent size discrepancy: the closer you get, the smaller the size of the pattern appears to be-an illusory situation resembling Michael Ende's tale of the pseudo-giant Mr Tur Tur.

A review of the impairments, preserved visual functions, and neuropathology in 21 patients with visual form agnosia - A unique defect with line drawings.

We present a comprehensive review of the rare syndrome visual form agnosia (VFA). We begin by documenting its history, including the origins of the term, and the first case study labelled as VFA. The defining characteristics of the syndrome, as others have previously defined it, are then described. The impairments, preserved aspects of visual perception, and areas of brain damage in 21 patients who meet these defining characteristics are described in detail, including which tests were used to verify the presence or absence of key symptoms. From this, we note important similarities along with n
