A comparison of self-esteem and perfectionism in anorexia nervosa and body dysmorphic disorder.

Previous studies have identified phenotypic similarities between anorexia nervosa (AN) and body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which share the common feature of negative body image. Studies comparing endophenotypes that may cut across both disorders-as suggested by the National Institute of Mental Health's Research Domain Criteria-are limited. Sixty-nine individuals (AN, n = 24; BDD, n = 23; mentally healthy controls [MHCs], n = 22) completed diagnostic interviews and self-reports assessing self-esteem and perfectionism. Clinical groups showed greater perfectionism in almost all subdimensions as w…

A clinical investigation of motivation to change standards and cognitions about failure in perfectionism.

BACKGROUND: Clinical perfectionism is a transdiagnostic process that has been found to maintain eating disorders, anxiety disorders and depression. Cognitive behavioural models explaining the maintenance of clinical perfectionism emphasize the contribution of dichotomous thinking and resetting standards higher following both success and failure in meeting their goals. There has been a paucity of research examining the predictions of the models and motivation to change perfectionism. Motivation to change is important as individuals with clinical perfectionism often report many perceived benefit…

A preliminary evaluation of cognitive-behaviour therapy for clinical perfectionism: a case series.

OBJECTIVE: The construct of 'clinical perfectionism' has been developed in response to criticisms that other approaches have failed to yield advances in the treatment of the type of self-oriented perfectionism that poses a clinical problem. The primary aim of this study was to conduct a preliminary investigation into the efficacy of a theory-driven, cognitive-behavioural intervention for 'clinical perfectionism'. DESIGN: A multiple baseline single case series design was used. METHOD: A specific, 10-session cognitive-behavioural intervention to address clinical perfectionism in eating disorde…

Exploring How Soccer Players With Perfectionism Navigate Challenges in Talent Pathways.

The study provides a qualitative exploration of how soccer players reporting perfectionism navigate challenges in talent pathways. Eighteen players (10 females, eight males, Mage = 16.17 years, SD = 3.47) from talent pathways with higher levels of perfectionism and perfectionistic cognitions (1SD above the mean of samples from previous studies) participated in semistructured one-to-one interviews. Using semantic thematic analysis, seven themes were identified: cycles of anxiety, sadness at being a substitute, self-criticism and hopelessness during slumps, ruminating on mistakes, worthless when…

Perfect Riders: Personality, Perfectionism, and Mental Health in Norwegian Competition Riders.

The purpose of the study was to elucidate the relationship between personality traits, perfectionism, and mental health (self-efficacy, positive emotions) among competition riders. Data were collected by online questionnaires among 662 licensed competition riders in Norway. The results showed that riders who were high on conscientiousness and low on neuroticism had better mental health than other riders. Self-oriented perfectionism predicted mental health and mediated partly the associations between personality traits and mental health. Socially prescribed perfectionism had no association with…

Self-critical perfectionism, dependency and entropy during cognitive behavioural therapy for depression.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether 'personality vulnerability' (i.e., self-critical perfectionism or dependency) predicts the trajectory of change, as well as variability and instability (i.e., entropy) of symptoms, during cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for depression. DESIGN: Study participants were outpatients (N = 312) experiencing a primary mood disorder. Participants received CBT for depression group sessions over 15 weeks. Self-report measures of self-critical perfectionism, dependency, and depression were collected longitudinally. METHODS: A latent growth mixture modelling (LG…

Influence of Nurses' Perfectionism on Professional Quality of Life: The Role of Submissive Compassion.

Background/Objectives: Nurses are frequently exposed to emotionally demanding situations, placing them at risk of adverse psychological outcomes such as secondary traumatic stress (STS) and burnout. Personality traits, particularly perfectionism, may influence these outcomes. Submissive compassion, characterized by caring behavior motivated by a desire for approval or avoidance of rejection, may play an explanatory role in these relationships. Methods: This study examined whether submissive compassion was statistically associated with the relationship between perfectionism and professional qua…

The mediating role of maladaptive perfectionism in the relationship between childhood trauma and depression.

Childhood trauma resulting from violence, abuse, and neglect has long-term effects on health and is linked to the development of diseases and mental disorders, including depression. It turns out that traumatic experiences in childhood can also foster traits of perfectionism, whose maladaptive form may further increase the risk of developing depression. The aim of this study was to assess the role of perfectionism in the relationship between childhood trauma and depression in adulthood. The analysis involved 308 participants (73 with depression and 235 healthy controls). The study used question…

Perfectionism unbound: An integrated individual and group intervention for those hiding imperfections.

The tendency to hide and mask suffering and one's perceived imperfections is one of the biggest obstacles in treating those with prominent perfectionistic traits. In this single case, we present an integrative form of psychotherapy for patients with recurrent strategies aimed at neither displaying nor disclosing their perfectionism. Emily was a 26-year-old woman diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and reported a personality pathology as diagnosed through the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders. The intervention comprised of a 4-month individual therapy and 2-month group therapy. Th…

The relationship between shame, perfectionism and Anorexia Nervosa: A grounded theory study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the potential relationship between shame, perfectionism and Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and their impact on recovery from AN. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 people currently accessing services for AN. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using constructivist-grounded theory methodology. RESULTS: A model was developed which found a vicious cycle between shame and perfectionism. Participants tried to alleviate their feelings of shame by striving for perfectionism, however failing caused them more shame. Participants who …

Examining the roles of metacognitive beliefs and maladaptive aspects of perfectionism in depression and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Metacognition and perfectionism are factors found to be associated with both anxiety and depression. A common component that underlies these factors is the influence of perseverance, or the tendency to continue a behaviour or thought even if it is no longer productive. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between metacognitive beliefs with maladaptive aspects of perfectionism (i.e. perseverance behaviours), and their relation to anxiety and depression. METHOD: Participants (n = 1033) completed six self-report questionnaires measuring metacognitive beliefs about…

Buffering against maladaptive perfectionism in bipolar disorder: The role of self-compassion.

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive perfectionism is a transdiagnostic risk and maintaining factor for a range of mental health conditions, including bipolar disorder (BD). Self-compassion represents a potential protective factor against maladaptive perfectionism, however no studies to date have examined the relationship of these constructs in BD. The aim of the present study was to examine associations between maladaptive perfectionism, self-compassion and symptoms among individuals with BD. METHODS: Baseline data were collected from 302 participants with a DSM-IV diagnosis of BD participating in an int…

Patients' perspective of a group intervention for perfectionism in anorexia nervosa: A qualitative study.

This study aimed to explore the experiences of adults with anorexia nervosa who took part in a perfectionism group intervention in an inpatient setting. Thematic analysis was used to explore patient feedback collected in focus groups. Patient feedback was generally positive and centred around three main themes: perceived benefits of the group, the content of the group and suggested improvements. The findings suggest that a brief perfectionism group intervention is an acceptable treatment with a range of perceived benefits for patients with severe anorexia nervosa. Understanding patients' exper…

The Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale: correlations with depression in college students with learning disabilities.

Interpretations of depression in children and adolescents with learning disabilities have tended to be neuropsychological or motivational. Some research has related various cognitive-behavioral constructs with depression and other problematic outcomes for this population. Research with nonlearning-disabled college students has provided correlations for scores on the Self-oriented and the two social scales of the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale with those on depression. No such work has been done with college students having learning disabilities. Measures for multidimensional perfectionis…
