Seasonal abundance and diel landing periodicity of Sabethes chloropterus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Trinidad, West Indies.

The seasonal occurrence and diel landing periodicity of Sabethes chloropterus (Humboldt) was studied weekly for 1 yr using the human bait catch in the Pt. Gourde Forest, Trinidad, W.I. Population abundance remained low throughout the dry season (16%) but increased after the onset of the rains in May and peaked by the middle of the rainy season (July-October). The diurnal periodicity of landing was unimodal during the wet season with a major peak between 1200-1600 hours and bimodal during the dry season with peaks at 0800-1000 and 1200-1400 hours. This study documents for the first time the per…

Long-term control of swelling after maxillo-facial surgery: a study of circaseptan reactive periodicity.

The course of swelling after maxillo-facial surgery was investigated by measuring the distance from the tragus to the pogonium. Post-operative distension does not diminish progressively, but decreases in a circaseptan rhythm. Antiphlogistic agents reduce the extent of the post-surgical swelling, but they also disturb the circaseptan reactive periodicity. This could indicate either an acceleration of the wound healing or a damping down or disturbance of the regeneration mechanisms of the organism. Although this question is of considerable clinical importance, present research has not yet provid…

Seasonal forcing and waning immunity drive the sub-annual periodicity of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Seasonal trends in infectious diseases are shaped by climatic and social factors, with many respiratory viruses peaking in winter. However, the seasonality of COVID-19 remains in dispute, with significant waves of cases across the United States occurring in both winter and summer. Using wavelet analysis of COVID-19 cases during the pandemic period, we find that the periodicity of epidemic COVID-19 varies markedly across the U.S. and correlates with winter temperatures, indicating seasonal forcing. However, seasonal forcing alone cannot explain the pattern of multiple waves per year that has be…

Factors associated with the periodicity of Loa loa microfilaremia in the Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: Loa loa microfilariae circulate in the peripheral blood of human hosts following a diurnal periodicity, with maximal microfilaremia levels generally observed between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Few studies have assessed factors potentially associated with this periodicity. METHODS: Microfilaremia data were collected repeatedly between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm from 13 individuals in the Republic of the Congo. Using local polynomial regression (LOESS), we determined the best models representing the dynamics of microfilaremia over this period. In a second step, using cosinor models, we evaluate…

Estimation of the reproduction number and identification of periodicity for HFMD infections in northwest China.

Repeated outbreaks of Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) infections have been observed in recent decades and dominated by various enteroviral serotypes. In particular, enterovirus 71 (EV-A71), coxsackievirus A16 (CV-A16) and coxsackievirus A6 (CV-A6) dominated the prevalence of HFMD infections alternatively in recent years with various outbreak sizes in Baoji, a city of Shaanxi Province in Northwest China. Estimating the reproduction number for various enteroviruses serotypes in northwest China (north temperate zone) and identification of cyclicity of HFMD infections are therefore an issue of

Cluster-status migrainosus with a weekly periodicity responsive to high-flow oxygen: A case report.

BACKGROUND: There are cases in the headache literature described as "cluster-migraine," but none of stereotyped cases of cluster headache evolving into status migrainosus. We believe this is the first documented case of "cluster-status migrainosus". CASE: A 54 year-old female hospital administrator presented with headaches with a unique periodicity and semiology that were acutely responsive to high-flow oxygen. She experienced cluster headache attacks every Thursday morning at 3-4 am, which would evolve into status migrainosus lasting through Sunday evening. These attacks were preceded by pro…

Periodicity of chronic ethanol administration as a variable in the induction of dependence in rats.

The effect of periodicity of chronic ethanol intragastric administrations on the induction of physical and behavioral dependence on ethanol has been assessed in two groups of rats. In the two groups, rats initially selected for an identical sensitivity to ethanol, were administered daily 10 g per kg b.w. during 15 days. In one group, this daily dose was administered in six intragastric pulses of 1.7 g/kg each, 3 hours apart. In the other group, the same 10 g/kg daily dose was administered in three pulses of 3.33 g/kg, 6 hours apart. In control rats determinations of blood ethanol level in thes…

Reduced growth hormone secretion with maintained periodicity following cranial irradiation in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

OBJECTIVE: Low dose cranial irradiation in children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) has been reported to reduce GH secretion in puberty. A recent study also reported a disturbed periodicity of GH secretion during puberty. We have focused on the different stages of puberty in studying these two parameters of GH secretion and have also compared the effects of 18 vs 24 Gy radiation dose. PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: Thirty-four children previously treated for ALL were compared with a control group of 208 healthy normally growing children. GH secretion was measured as 24-hour profiles. RE…

Monthly variation of hospital admission and mortality of peptic ulcer disease: a reappraisal of ulcer periodicity.

The occurrence of peptic ulcer is characterized by a seasonal variation, the meaning of which is poorly understood. The present study examined the periodicity of hospital admissions and mortality resulting from gastric and duodenal ulcer to determine its etiologic relevance. Ulcer periodicity was studied in the nationwide data sets of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Health Care Financing Administration, and the Vital Statistics. Both ulcer types were characterized by similar patterns of periodicity. Hospital admissions peaked during the first 3 months of the year, followed by a marked …

[Studies on the periodicity of fetal and neonatal heart rate variability by fast Fourier transform analysis].

Heart rate changes were analyzed by fast Fourier transform technique in 68 normal fetuses of 23 to 41 weeks, 8 normal deliveries, 11 normal … to 0.12 Hz. These results suggest that fetal heart rate is controlled basically by 8 sec or greater periodicity. Neonatal 1.3 to 1.6 sec periodicity suggests a relationship between heart rate and respiration. No change in periodicity was found in fetal heart rate after the administration of 0.5 mg of atropine sulfate to the mother in 12 cases.

[Periodicity in the rise and fall of the numbers of the principal Staphylococcus aureus phage groups].

The results of the phage typing of 5, 168 Staph. aureus strains isolated in a surgical hospital between 1959 and 1977 are analyzed for each year of this period. The wave of increase in the number of staphylococci belonging to phage group II which began, as discovered in this study, in 1965 and still showed no tendency towards decrease in 1977, as well as the periodicity of rises and falls in the number of staphylococci belonging to phage groups I and III are discussed and compared with the data contained in the literature. The authors come to the conclusion that Staph. aureus is subject to wav…

Periodicity of varicella-zoster virus in the presence of immune boosting and clinical reinfection with varicella.

BACKGROUND: Clinical reinfection with varicella is normally ignored in mathematical transmission models as it is considered too rare to be important. METHODS: We apply basic bifurcation analysis to a simple mathematical model of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) transmission incorporating reinfection. RESULTS: We demonstrate that under certain conditions this model can exhibit periodic behaviour as opposed to what is observed in VZV models that ignore the possibility of repeat varicella attacks. Periodicity can be induced by a combination of immune boosting and reinfection while the impact of zos…

Atypical atrioventricular Wenckebach periodicity caused by conduction through triple atrioventricular junctional pathway as a probable mechanism.

Electrocardiograms were taken from an 84-year-old man with right bundle branch block in whom atypical atrioventricular Wenckebach periodicity was frequently occurred. The electrocardiographic findings as mentioned below suggested that the atypical periodicity was caused by conduction through triple atrioventricular junctional pathways as a probable mechanism. When a P wave was blocked after a markedly prolonged PR interval of 0.64 s, the RP interval containing this blocked P wave ranged between 0.84 s and 0.86 s, and the next P wave was followed by a QRS complex of the same configuration, with…

Axonal spike-count regimes link spinal cord stimulation periodicity to artificial sensory detection and discrimination in rodents.

Electrical stimulation is widely used to evoke artificial sensation, yet how temporal stimulation patterns are transformed into neural activity and perception remains poorly understood. Recent behavioral studies have shown that increasing the aperiodicity of spinal cord stimulation pulse trains alters both detection thresholds and discrimination performance despite constant pulse counts, suggesting a role for temporal structure beyond rate alone. However, the neural mechanisms underlying these effects remain unresolved. We developed a biophysically grounded computational framework linking a fi…

Dietary Periodicity Disrupts the Gut Microbiota-Enterolactone Axis to Exacerbate MASLD in a Translational Guinea Pig Model.

Background/Objectives: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is closely linked to Western dietary patterns. Yet, preclinical studies rely on continuous high-fat feeding, overlooking the intermittent nature of human eating. Whether dietary periodicity itself influences the gut-liver axis and MASLD pathogenesis remains unknown. We compared continuous and intermittent high-fat, high-cholesterol (HFHC) diets in guinea pigs, a model that mirrors human lipoprotein metabolism, hepatic cholesterol handling, and hindgut fermentation. Methods: Integrated multi-omics analyses (…
