[Concentration characteristics and ecological risk of persistent organic pollutants in the surface sediments of Tianjin coastal area].

Surface sediments were sampled from various surface water bodies in Tianjin coastal area, and four types of persistent organic pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organic pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were measured. The purposes were to investigate the concentration characteristics of the four types of pollutants and to assess their ecological risks. The results showed that all the 16 priority PAHs were detected from the 10 sediments sampled from the Tianjin coastal area. The total concentrations of the 1…

Persistent organic pollutants and metals in the freshwater biota of the Canadian Subarctic and Arctic: an overview.

Over 1999-2002, an extensive series of contaminant studies was conducted on freshwater biota of Canada's Arctic and Subarctic regions. The majority of inorganic contaminant studies focused on mercury and fish. While mercury concentrations were low in benthic feeding fish such as whitefish, predatory fish such as lake trout, pike, and walleye frequently had mercury levels which exceeded 0.2 mug/g, the consumption guideline for frequent consumers of fish, and 0.5 microg/g, the guideline for the commercial use of fish. Numerous consumption advisories were issued for lakes along the Mackenzie Rive

Association of In Utero Persistent Organic Pollutant Exposure With Placental Thyroid Hormones.

In utero exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can result in thyroid function disorder, leading to concerns about their impact on fetal and neonatal development. The associations between placental levels of various POPs and thyroid hormones (THs) were investigated. In a prospective Danish study initially established for assessing congenital cryptorchidism, 58 placenta samples were collected from mothers of boys born with (n = 28) and without (n = 30) cryptorchidism. The concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenz…

Associations between pre-disease biomarkers of persistent organic pollutants and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis risk in four European cohorts.

OBJECTIVES: Previous retrospective studies suggested that occupational exposures to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) may be associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but prospective studies with biomarker exposure assessment are scarce. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the relationship between POP exposures and ALS risk in the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health study (EPIC) cohort and to conduct a meta-analysis including results from the prior study of 3 small prospective Finnish cohorts in addition to the Danish EPIC cohort. METHODS: We identified 166 incident ALS cas…

Prenatal Exposure to Persistent Organic Pollutants Is Associated with Altered Lipid and Metabolomic Profiles in Mothers and Newborns.

Maternal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has been linked with adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes, yet the underlying biological pathways involved remain poorly characterized. In this study, we examined associations between POP concentrations in maternal plasma and cord blood and metabolomic and lipidomic profiles of pregnant women and their newborns and further assessed relationships with neonatal birth weight. A total of 257 mother-infant dyads were included. Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCs) were quantified using gas chr…

Associations of accumulated persistent organic pollutants in breast adipose tissue with the evolution of breast cancer after surgery.

Chronic exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is suspected to contribute to the onset of breast cancer, but the impact on the evolution of patients after diagnosis is unclear. We aimed to analyze the contribution of long-term exposure to five POPs to overall mortality, cancer recurrence, metastasis, and development of second primary tumors over a global follow-up of 10 years after surgery in breast cancer patients in a cohort study. Between 2012 and 2014, a total of 112 newly diagnosed breast cancer patients were recruited from a public hospital in Granada, Southern Spain. Historica…

Levels of persistent organic pollutants in breast milk samples representing Finnish and Danish boys with and without hypospadias.

Hypospadias is a congenital malformation of penile urethra with unknown etiology in most cases. Persistent organic pollutant (POP) exposure may disrupt endocrine function during a critical window of development of male genitalia. In animal studies, POPs have been associated with male reproductive disorders, including hypospadias, but only few studies have assessed this relationship in humans. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between hypospadias and POP concentration levels in breast milk, as a proxy for prenatal exposure. This is a nested case-control study of Danish and

Low-Dose Persistent Organic Pollutants Impair Insulin Secretory Function of Pancreatic β-Cells: Human and In Vitro Evidence.

Low-dose persistent organic pollutants (POPs), especially organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), have emerged as a new risk factor for type 2 diabetes. We evaluated whether chronic exposure to low-dose POPs affects insulin secretory function of β-cells in humans and in vitro cells. Serum concentrations of OCPs and PCBs were measured in 200 adults without diabetes. Mathematical model-based insulin secretion indices were estimated by using a 2-h seven-sample oral glucose tolerance test. Insulin secretion by INS-1E β-cells was measured after 48 h of treatment with …

Detection of persistent organic pollutants binding modes with androgen receptor ligand binding domain by docking and molecular dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are persistent in the environment after release from industrial compounds, combustion productions or pesticides. The exposure of POPs has been related to various reproductive disturbances, such as reduced semen quality, testicular cancer, and imbalanced sex ratio. Among POPs, dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (4,4'-DDE) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are the most widespread and well-studied compounds. Recent studies have revealed that 4,4'-DDE is an antagonist of androgen receptor (AR). However, the mechanism of the inhibition remains elusi…

Associations of plasma persistent organic pollutants with brain atrophy, cognitive decline and risk of dementia in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP), including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides, are established neurotoxicants in experimental models; yet it remains uncertain whether exposures in the general population increase the risk to develop brain aging pathologies. We assessed the prospective associations of plasma POP concentrations with three dementia-related outcomes in a population-based cohort of older adults. METHODS: Analyses included 515 participants from the Three-City Study, free of dementia at baseline at the time of blood measurements (1999-2000,…

Different associations of albuminuria with total and cardiovascular mortality by concentrations of persistent organic pollutants in the elderly.

Epidemiologic studies have indicated that albuminuria is associated with mortality from all causes and cardiovascular disease (CVD), with substantial heterogeneity. We evaluated if the associations of urine albumin creatinine ratio (ACR) with all-cause and CVD mortality differed depending on serum concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), strong lipophilic chemical mixtures with very long half-lives, which are recently linked to many degenerative diseases. Study subjects were participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004 who were 60 years or older…

Reducing emissions of persistent organic pollutants from a diesel engine by fueling with water-containing butanol diesel blends.

The manufacture of water-containing butanol diesel blends requires no excess dehydration and surfactant addition. Therefore, compared with the manufacture of conventional bio-alcohols, the energy consumption for the manufacture of water-containing butanol diesel blends is reduced, and the costs are lowered. In this study, we verified that using water-containing butanol diesel blends not only solves the tradeoff problem between nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter emissions from diesel engines, but it also reduces the emissions of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polycycl…
