The effect of aqualase and phacoemulsification on the corneal endothelium.

PURPOSE: To compare corneal endothelial cell loss after cataract surgery by phacoemulsification and by Aqualase. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized study of 75 eyes of 75 patients undergoing cataract surgery. Patients were randomly assigned to receive either phacoemulsification or Aqualase for cataract removal. Specular microscopy was used to calculate endothelial cell counts preoperatively and 3 weeks and 6 months afterwards. Best-corrected visual acuity was also measured. The t-test was used to detect statistical significance. RESULTS: The mean endothelial cell loss was 8.1% in th

[Cataract surgery by phacoemulsification in Werner's syndrome].

We report two cases of Werner's syndrome, a sister and a brother of 32 and 28 years, respectively, who were operated on for cataracts in both eyes. This hereditary syndrome, also called the adult progeria, is characterized by several manifestations of premature aging. Cataract surgery in this syndrome often predisposes to complications such as wound dehiscence and bullous keratopathy. The 4 eyes of the two patients were operated on using the phacoemulsification technique. The operations were successful, and we did not observe any serious complications during the 2-year follow-up period: cystoi

Phacoemulsification in Eyes With Posttrabeculectomy Choroidal Detachment.

Four patients developed choroidal detachment within 3 months after trabeculectomy, documented with b-scan ultrasonography (BUS) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). Intraocular pressure (IOP) of the patients ranged from 3 to 5 mm Hg. Patients were treated with cycloplegia and steroids without complete resolution of detachment. Twelve months later all patients had developed visually significant cataracts and underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. Procedures were uncomplicated. Visual acuity ranged 0.1 to 0 LogMAR in the first postoperative month. IOP demonstrated an inc

Outcomes of sphincterotomy for small pupil phacoemulsification.

PURPOSE: Sphincterotomy, an alternative to iris hooks or pupil stretching, is a technique that can aid in small pupil phacoemulsification. The incidence of post-operative complications of this procedure, however, has not been studied. Our study evaluates the post-operative outcomes of phacoemulsification surgery with adjunctive pupillary sphincterotomy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of case notes and Medisoft ® electronic record of patients that had undergone simultaneous sphincterotomy, phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation by a single surgeon between Mar

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome and cataract surgery by phacoemulsification.

Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is a systemic age-related disease in which abnormal extracellular material is produced and accumulates in many ocular tissues. Its ocular manifestations involve all of the structures of the anterior segment as well as conjunctiva and orbital structures. The presence of pseudoexfoliation should alert the physicians to the increased risks associated during and after cataract surgery. Increasing awareness of this condition are important in the detection and preoperative determination of patients inclined to be at greater risk for complications during surgery. Data regar

Descemet membrane detachment during phacoemulsification. A Review.

Descemet membrane detachment (DMD) is an uncommon but clinically significant complication of cataract surgery, particularly phacoemulsification. This review summarizes current evidence on the incidence, risk factors, diagnosis, and management of DMD associated with cataract surgery. A narrative literature review identified 28 relevant publications between 1995 and 2025 across PubMed Medline, Cochrane Library Database, and Scopus, including retrospective and prospective studies, review articles, and case reports. Most cases of DMD result from mechanical trauma at the clear corneal incision site
