To improve our current understanding of normal flora in children, we investigated bacterial isolates from the pharynx and nasopharynx of 173 and 233 healthy children, respectively. The bacterial isolation rates were compared among three age groups: infants (<1 year), toddlers (1-5 years), and school-aged children (6-15 years). Acinic cell carcinoma accounts for approximately 2 to 6% of all salivary gland tumors. It usually originates in the parotid gland; the minor salivary glands and the upper respiratory tract are involved only infrequently. All cases of malignant tumours of the pharynx (excluding tumours of the tongue) were analyzed based on the retrospective data from the 5 clinical centers in Poland from the years 1992-2001. A considerable--over 50% increase in morbidity was found out regarding particularly tumours of the oropharynx. Multiple primary cancers were found in 23 of 68 patients (34%) with an index cancer in the oral cavity or pharyngeal area treated in our institute from June 1995 to July 1998. Four cases had triple primary cancers. All 68 cases underwent upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy as well as ultrasonography of the liver. Hypoparathyroidism occurs secondary to surgery for carcinoma of the pharynx and larynx in which a total thyroidectomy is required. The indications for partial and total thyroidectomy are presented. Hypoparathyroidism is an important and complex problem with the clinical presentation ranging from tetany to latent chronic hypoparathyroidism. Serum calcium, phosphate, magnesium, and protein levels are important parameters to monitor. A therapeutic strategy is presented and its complications are discussed. The role of magnesium in calcium metabolism is emphasized.
