The synthesis of the macrocyclic receptor L1, which contains a tetraamine chain linking the 6,6'-positions of a 2,2'-dipyridine moiety, is reported. Its basicity properties and complexation features toward Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) have been studied in aqueous solutions by means of potentiometric, UV/Vis spectroscopy and fluorescence emission measurements and compared with those of ligand L2, in which a 1,10-phenanthroline moiety replaces the dipyridine unit of L1. The Cd(II) atom, located on the twofold axis, assumes a CdO(4)N(2) distorted octa-hedral coordination geometry. Millimolar concentrations of tervalent manganese pyrophosphate can partially activate nitrate reductase which has been inactivated with NADH and HCN. The tervalent manganese complex is nevertheless not reduced by NADH in the presence of the enzyme, that is, it is not a substrate for the diaphorase moiety of the nitrate reductase. Ferric o-phenanthroline, on the other hand, is a good diaphorase substrate, but fails to activate the inactive enzyme.

Three new phenanthroline-derived ligands were synthesized by the Schiff base condensation method. Vascular endothelial cells cover the luminal surface of blood vessels in a monolayer. Proliferation of these cells is crucial for the repair of damaged endothelial monolayers. In the present study, we identified a zinc complex, Zn(ii)2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Zn-12), that stimulates the proliferation of bovine aortic endothelial cells in a culture system. We have studied the effect of Cr(III)(phen)3 [(tris(1,10-phenanthroline) chromium(III) chloride)] on lymphocytes in order to find out if metallothioneins (MTs) are produced in the process. We also investigated whether zinc pretreatment is able to protect cells from apoptosis reported to occur for this compound.
