An audit of phototherapy units.

Audit of phototherapy aims to examine their efficacy and functioning. Twenty-four centres providing neonatal care were visited by a team of two persons. Data form were completed with information regarding age of phototherapy units, its buildup in relation to number of tubelights, type of light and irradiance provided. Total of 58 units examined had a wide variety in relation to their build. There were only 21 units (36.2%) in which all the lights were in working order. Only five of the units (8.6%) had the recommended special blue lights. Only 18 of the units (31%) provided an acceptable level…

Tazarotene in combination with phototherapy.

Despite the vast array of available therapies for treating psoriasis, there remains a need for safer, more effective treatments. Topical tazarotene has been shown to be effective in treating mild-to-moderate psoriasis without causing the adverse effects, such as mucocutaneous toxicity, hyperostosis, and elevation in serum lipids, often associated with orally administered retinoids. A 2-week pretreatment with tazarotene 0.1% gel once daily, followed by tazarotene plus UVB therapy (tazarotene-UVB) 3 times per week for 10 weeks, was more effective than UVB therapy alone or in combination with veh

Phototherapy in the home setting.

Physiologic jaundice is a self-limiting process affecting approximately 50% of normal-term infants during the first week of life. Phototherapy has proven to be effective in reducing or preventing the rise in bilirubin levels in the newborn when it is related to this natural process. However, phototherapy generally prolongs the length of hospital stay for the jaundiced newborn. The trend toward early discharge and the increase in the availability of highly sophisticated technical equipment designed for home use affords the family the opportunity to actively engage in the decision to take their …

Phototherapy in a new light.

Visible light phototherapy has been used in the treatment of neonatal jaundice for more than 25 years. This article reviews the current state of knowledge of how phototherapy works and provides a framework for understanding why green may soon become the color of choice for phototherapy lamps.

The Antipruritic Effect of Phototherapy.

Phototherapy is widely used to treat inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Repeated suberythemogenic doses of UV-light reduce inflammation in these diseases and ultimately may lead to a complete disappearance of cutaneous symptoms for weeks or months. Chronic pruritus is an important and highly distressing symptom of many of these inflammatory skin diseases. Interestingly, pruritus is also reduced or completely abolished by UV-treatment of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, and sometimes reduction of pruritus is the first indication for skin improvement by photother…

Use of Phototherapy in Children.

BACKGROUND: Phototherapy is a well-recognized treatment in adults and children. Previous articles have reported success in treating recalcitrant skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, pityriasis lichenoides chronica, and vitiligo in children. METHODS: This was a retrospective review over an 18-month period from June 2012 to December 2013 of all children receiving phototherapy in a tertiary pediatric dermatology center. RESULTS: Seventy-five patients 3 to 17 years of age (mean 10.6 years; 35 male, 40 female) were included. Forty-eight (64%) patients had AD and 21 (28%) had …

Phototherapy and vitamin D.

The skin is the site for the photosynthesis of vitamin D and is a target tissue for the active metabolite of vitamin D. An increasing body of evidence indicates that vitamin D produced during phototherapy may be responsible for the positive effects observed during treatment of some skin diseases. Topical or oral application of vitamin D derivatives are used alone or with phototherapy. This paper reviews what is known about the use of phototherapy to enhance vitamin D levels, the use of vitamin D analogues with phototherapy, the efficacy of combination therapies, and controversies regarding som…

Phototherapy for alopecia areata.

Phototherapy is a useful therapeutic method for various skin diseases due to its modulatory effect on the cutaneous immune system. Alopecia areata is a dermatosis characterized by partial or complete hair loss. Collapse of the immune privilege of the hair follicle, which induces noncicatricial alopecia, is an important factor in its etiology. Several forms of phototherapy are used in dermatology.

Phototherapy for mycosis fungoides.

BACKGROUND: Both phototherapy and photochemotherapy have been used in all stages of mycosis fungoides since they improve the symptoms and have a favourable adverse effect profile. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed an extensive search of published literature using keywords like "phototherapy", "photochemotherapy", "NBUVB", "PUVA", "UVA1", "mycosis fungoides", and "Sezary syndrome", and included systematic reviews, meta-analysis, national guidelines, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), prospective open label studies, and retrospective case series. These were then arranged according to their …

Phototherapy trends in dermatology.

BACKGROUND: Use of phototherapy in the United States declined during the 1990s, largely due to unfavorable economic incentives. The trends in phototherapy since then are not well characterized. METHODS: We analyzed the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) data on quantity of phototherapy visits and associated diagnoses and payment sources. Trends were assessed by linear regression. RESULTS: There were an estimated 230 000 outpatient phototherapy visits per year, with an increasing trend over time (p = 0.03). Dermatologists managed 87% of the visits. Leading diagnoses associated wi…

[Phototherapy in the era of biologicals].

The development of biologicals had led to a dramatic change in the therapy of psoriasis, making necessary a re-evaluation of conventional therapeutic strategies. Four parameters must be evaluated: efficacy, economic burden, side effects and practicability. As for efficacy, according to published meta-analyses Infliximab reaches the efficiency of PUVA therapy, whereas the other biologicals, although being very effective, are inferior. Biologicals have a clear advantage in treating psoriatic arthritis. All published pharmacoeconomic studies demonstrate a significant advantage of phototherapy ove…

Phototherapy in the age of biologics.

Dermatologists are presented with a diversity of therapeutic modalities for the treatment of inflammatory, sclerosing, and neoplastic conditions, but with the development of various new irradiation devices that utilize specific parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, phototherapy has become a more viable, accessible, and efficacious option in the treatment of these conditions. The ultraviolet (UV) range (10-400 nm) is further subdivided into UVA and UVB, each of which has been particularly useful in a number of skin conditions. The most commonly used forms of UV irradiation are UVA1, psoralen p…
