Speed Breeding of Soybean by Using 22 h Photoperiod Increases Photochemical Efficiency of Pods and Produces Six Generations Per Year.

Fast generation cycling of plants has the potential to overcome the bottleneck of traditional breeding programmes, which often require several years to achieve the desired outcomes. Recent speed breeding methodologies have reduced generation times in both short- and long-day species by optimizing environmental conditions. However, protocols for short-day plants impose a constant short-day photoperiod throughout the entire life cycle, even though plants could benefit from extended light exposure. Here, we report a speed breeding scheme for soybean (Glycine max) based on a long-day photoperiod o

Epigenetic Control of Cold Stress Tolerance in Plants: Emerging Mechanisms and Applications for Crop Improvement.

Low temperature is an abiotic stress factor that affects plant development and geographic expansion, resulting in significant economic losses in worldwide food production each year. Through evolution, plants have developed intricate adaptation systems, with epigenetic regulation-modifying gene expression without altering DNA sequences-being pivotal in the cold stress response and memory formation. This review provides a systematic overview of the role of the main epigenetic mechanisms, including histone modifications, DNA methylation, non-coding RNA regulation, and chromatin remodeling, in pla

Genetic covariance between plant biparental populations: concept and estimation.

Covariances between relatives, between traits evaluated in the same environment, and between the values for the same trait in different environments have long been exploited in plant and animal breeding. An assumption underlying these covariances is that individuals belong to a single population or that populations have homogeneous covariances. This assumption is routinely violated, yet a framework for defining and estimating the covariance between populations is lacking. Our objective was to develop and validate a framework for estimating the genetic covariance between plant biparental popula

Mutagenesis of kiwifruit CENTRORADIALIS-like genes transforms a climbing woody perennial with long juvenility and axillary flowering into a compact plant with rapid terminal flowering.

Annualization of woody perennials has the potential to revolutionize the breeding and production of fruit crops and rapidly improve horticultural species. Kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) is a recently domesticated fruit crop with a short history of breeding and tremendous potential for improvement. Previously, multiple kiwifruit CENTRORADIALIS (CEN)-like genes have been identified as potential repressors of flowering. In this study, CRISPR/Cas9- mediated manipulation enabled functional analysis of kiwifruit CEN-like genes AcCEN4 and AcCEN. Mutation of these genes transformed a climbing woody p

Tree grafting: an introspection with reference to breeding, production and productivity in Hevea brasiliensis.

Grafting has transformed the propagation and productivity of perennial tree crops, but genetically variable rootstocks and functional stock-scion interactions can limit the uniform expression of elite scion potential. Evidence from Hevea brasiliensis highlights the need for compatible and uniform rootstocks, self-rooted planting material, and emerging graft assisted biotechnological approaches to improve plantation uniformity and productivity. Due to high heterozygosity and difficulty in fixing desirable traits, grafting has long been the preferred method of propagation in many perennial crops

Upgrading the genome of an elite japonica rice variety Kongyu 131 for lodging resistance improvement.

Developing a new rice variety requires tremendous efforts and years of input. To improve the defect traits of the excellent varieties becomes more cost and time efficient than breeding a completely new variety. Kongyu 131 is a high-performing japonica variety with early maturity, high yield, wide adaptability and cold resistance, but the poor-lodging resistance hinders the industrial production of Kongyu 131 in the Northeastern China. In this study, we attempted to improve the lodging resistance of Kongyu 131 from perspectives of both gene and trait. On the one hand, by QTL analysis and fine m

CRISPR/Cas9-Based Genome Editing Using Rice Zygotes.

Genome-editing technology involving the targeted mutagenesis of plants using programmable nucleases has been developing rapidly and has enormous potential in next-generation plant breeding. Its application has been hindered in many cases, however, due to technical hurdles, such as the low rate of macromolecule delivery into plant cells and tissues or difficulties in plant transformation and regeneration. Here, a protocol for CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing using rice zygotes is described. The genome-editing system is constructed via polyethylene glycol/calcium-mediated transfection with CRISP…

Mosquito breeding in rice fields and its role in malaria transmission in Mandla district, M.P.

A study of the breeding of mosquitoes in the rice field agro-ecosystem was carried out in Mandla district during 1987 and 1988. Results revealed that mosquito breeding commences in July and ends in October. Mosquito breeding in rice fields is inversely proportional to the distance from village. A. culicifacies breeds in rice fields up to a plant height of 20 cm and then gradually declines and becomes scarce, and is taken over by A. theobaldi and A. splendidus. A. fluviatilis breeds in irrigation channels almost throughout the rice growing season. There were a large number of other mosquito bre

Research and practice on shuttle breeding between Henan and Xinjiang based on elite cotton germplasm from China's mainland.

To address the bottleneck of a narrow genetic base and the difficulty of concurrently improving high yield and superior fiber quality in Xinjiang cotton, which has resulted from long-term reliance on local germplasm, this study introduced excellent germplasm resources from China's mainland. A total of 16 hybrid populations were developed by crossing these mainland resources with the superior Xinjiang cultivar Xinluzhong 51. Through shuttle breeding between Henan and Xinjiang (referred to as Yu-Jiang shuttle breeding) and multi-ecological alternating selection, the yield potential and stability

Characterization and Mapping of a Rolling Leaf Mutant Allele rlT73 on Chromosome 1BL of Wheat.

Leaf rolling is regarded as an important morphological trait in wheat breeding. Moderate leaf rolling is helpful to keep leaves upright and improve the photosynthesis of plants, leading to increased yield. However, studies on the identification of genomic regions/genes associated with rolling leaf have been reported less frequently in wheat. In this study, a rolling leaf mutant, T73, which has paired spikelets, dwarfism, and delayed heading traits, was obtained from a common wheat landrace through ethyl methanesulfonate mutagenesis. The rlT73 mutation caused an increase in the number of epider

Chromosome-level genome assembly of a triploid poplar Populus alba 'Berolinensis'.

Many recent studies have provided significant insights into polyploid breeding, but limited research has been carried out on trees. The genomic information needed to understand growth and response to abiotic stress in polyploidy trees is largely unknown, but has become critical due to the threats to forests imposed by climate change. Populus alba 'Berolinensis,' also known "Yinzhong poplar," is a triploid poplar from northeast China. This hybrid triploid poplar is widely used as a landscape ornamental and in urban forestry owing to its adaptation to adverse environments and faster growth than

Occurrence of albinism during wheat androgenesis is correlated with repression of the key genes required for proper chloroplast biogenesis.

The phenomenon of albinism in wheat androgenesis is linked to the transcriptional repression of specific genes involved in chloroplast biogenesis during the first weeks of in vitro culture. Isolated microspore culture is widely used to accelerate breeding programs and produce new cultivars. However, in cereals and particularly in wheat, the use of this technique is limited due to the high proportion of regenerated albino plantlets. The causes and mechanisms leading to the formation of albino plantlets in wheat remain largely unknown and, to date, no concrete solution has been found to make it

Molecular and evolutionary mechanisms of self-incompatibility in angiosperms.

As an intraspecific outcrossing mechanism, self-incompatibility (SI) widely adopted by hermaphroditic plants is usually controlled by a polymorphic multi-allelic S locus. Typically, six molecular types of SI have been found, including type-I controlled by the pistil S S-RNase and pollen S SLFs commonly spread in Plantaginaceae, Solanaceae, Rosaceae and Rutaceae, type-II by SRK and SCR in Brassicaceae, type-III by PrsS and PrpS in Papaveraceae, type-IV by CYP-GLO2-KFB-CCM-PUM in Primulaceae, type-V by TsSPH1-TsYUC6-TsBAHD in Turneraceae and type-VI by HPS10-S and DUF247I-S in Poaceae, with type

Evaluation and selection of superior snap melon (Cucumis melo var. momordica Duth. & Full.) genotypes using morphological, yield, and selected fruit quality traits.

The snap melon (Cucumis melo var. momordica Duth. & Full.), recognized for its characteristic fruit splitting at maturity, is a nutritious and resilient cucurbit with considerable potential for crop improvement. However, systematic breeding efforts remain limited due to low genetic variability present in available germplasm and the relationships among yield and selected fruit quality traits. This study evaluated 30 snap melon genotypes to quantify genetic variability, heritability, trait correlations, and genetic divergence for the identification of superior breeding materials.
