BACKGROUND: Plasma expander (PE) based on polyethylene glycol (PEG) conjugated to albumin has shown positive results maintaining blood volume during hemodilution and restoring blood volume during resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock. Polyethylene glycol conjugation to human serum albumin (HSA), PEG-HSA, increases size, weight, and colloidal osmotic pressure, with minor effects on solution viscosity.

A series of polymers of polyglutamic acid have been tested as plasma volume expanders. The results indicate that those polymers prepared from backbones of 40,000 molecular weight or over and side chains of 3,000 molecular weight or over, will have plasma volume retention half-life of 15 hours or longer. Plasma renin activity (PRA), volume (PV), osmolality, and hemodynamic parameters were examined in relation to the anaerobic threshold (AT) during progressive cycle ergometry (PE) and repetitive bouts of unilateral isokinetic knee extension-flexion (LE) at 50% maximum voluntary contractions in eight normotensive males. Physiological adaptation including expansion in plasma volume is exaggerated in women with twin pregnancies. In singleton pregnancy and multiparous twin pregnancies there is an association between plasma volume expansion and birth weight, but this is not so in primigravid twin pregnancies.
