Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia) complex is a highly resistant gram-negative pathogen known to cause lung infection in cystic fibrosis, chronic granulomatous disease, and immunocompromised patients. However, it may rarely infect immunocompetent patients as well. Here, we present the case of a 30-year-old male patient who was treated for B. cepacia pneumonia in the hospital, discharged with oral antibiotics, and returned two months later with recurring B. cepacia pneumonia and bacteremia. The patient rapidly declined over the next 24 hours and expired in the intensive care unit. This cas

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Few studies have analysed a large number of patients with necrotizing pneumonia (NP) diagnosed based on computed tomography (CT) scans. The aim of the present study was to document the incidence and clinical features of NP in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on CAP patients who had been admitted to a tertiary referral centre and who had available enhanced CT scan images. Patients were allocated into NP and non-NP groups, and they were compared with respect to various clinical variables.
RESULTS: Of the

Necrotizing pneumonia (NP) is a rare but severe complication of community-acquired pneumonia in children, often mimicking Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation and presenting significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report the case of a 2-year-old boy with a prolonged and complex course of NP, initially suspected to have Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation. The patient presented with persistent fever, cough, and dyspnea, accompanied by co-infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae, influenza A (H3N2), human metapneumovirus, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Imaging revealed progres

A 33-year-old man presented with a 1-week history of odynophagia, fever, and dyspnea. Initial chest computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple bilateral consolidations predominantly in the lower lobes. Laboratory investigations revealed leukocytosis, while cultures remained negative and the patient was started on antibiotics for suspected community-acquired pneumonia. Despite this, his condition deteriorated, with follow-up CT showing necrotizing pneumonia and cavitations. He subsequently developed violaceous papular lesions on the upper extremities, and skin biopsy confirmed Sweet syndrome, c

INTRODUCTION: The number of patients with necrotizing pneumonia has increased in recent years. The aim of this study is to review the incidence, management, and outcome of pediatric necrotizing pneumonia requiring surgical therapy and to prove that lung resection results in favorable development of patients. We hypothesize that overall lung function in children after lung resection does not differ from that of the healthy population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective tertiary referral center study with a prospective follow-up spirometric study of patients with necrotizing pneumonia manag

Clostridia are uncommon causes of pleuropulmonary infection. Clostridial species infecting the pleuropulmonary structures characteristically cause a necrotizing pneumonia with involvement of the pleura. Most cases have iatrogenic causes usually due to invasive procedures into the pleural cavity, such as thoracentesis or thoracotomy, or penetrating chest injuries. Rarely clostridia pleuropulmonary infections are not related to these factors. The clinical course of pleuropulmonary clostridial infections can be very variable, but they may be rapid and fatal. We report a rare case of necrotizing p

The emergence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) as a cause of severe infections has been described in the recent years. In 2006, the first report of skin and soft tissue infection by CA-MRSA was published in Colombia. Herein, two additional cases of CA-MRSA are reported with a clinical course characterized by rapid progression, prolonged stay in the intensive care unit and complication of pneumonia with the onset of empyema. Both adult patients developed acute renal failure, and were treated with linezolide; the subsequent clinical response showed adeq

RATIONALE: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common cause of community-acquired pneumonia. Currently, it is believed that many cases of pulmonary infection with negative results on pathogenic testing are caused by S. pneumoniae. There have been no reports of the detection of S. pneumoniae antigen in lung lavage fluid.
PATIENT CONCERNS: An elderly male patient with suboptimal fasting blood glucose control and a history of liver abscess.
DIAGNOSIS: Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed inflammatory lesions in both lungs with consolidation in the middle lobe of the right lung.
INTERVENTIONS: Aft

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify factors that predict progression to necrotizing pneumonia (NP) in children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MPP) who fail to respond to initial therapy and to develop a predictive model to support early clinical decision-making.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical and laboratory data of children with macrolide-unresponsive Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (MUMPP) admitted to Tianjin Children's Hospital from January 2021 to January 2025. MUMPP was defined as persistent fever (≥ 38.5°C, lasting ≥ 4 h/day) after ≥ 72 h of standardized intrave

BACKGROUND: We report a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sepsis and pneumonia in a postpartum patient.
CASE: A 21-year-old gravida 1 para 1 presented on postpartum day 9 with persistent elevated fever, dyspnea, cellulitis of the upper extremities, and an infected episiotomy site. Computed tomography of the chest revealed multiple widely distributed nodules and bilateral infiltrates with central cavitations. Sputum, blood, urine, and episiotomy site cultures grew MRSA, subsequently demonstrated by molecular fingerprinting and antibiotic susceptibility to be community

Penetrating anorectal and perineal injuries, though rare, present significant management challenges due to the complex anatomy and high risk of life-threatening complications, such as necrotizing pneumonia. This case report details a neglected anorectal trauma, which, after hematogenous spread of Staphylococcus aureus, led to severe sepsis and fatal necrotizing pneumonia. The infection, originating from the trauma site, spread through the bloodstream, resulting in widespread pulmonary tissue destruction. Early diagnosis, aggressive intervention, and a multidisciplinary approach are crucial for

A 37-year-old healthy man was transferred to the emergency department of this hospital because of fever and hemoptysis. A radiograph of the chest revealed a cavitary lesion in the right upper lobe. Computed tomography of the chest showed necrotizing cavitary pneumonia. Urgent throacoscopic lobectomy was performed. Sputum and intraoperative pleural pus grew methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The pathological examination reportedly revealed cryptococcal infection. He had a full recovery after intravenous linezolid treatment.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is being recognized increasingly as a cause of community-acquired infection. The organism usually causes skin and soft tissue infection. Here, we present a patient with community-acquired MRSA pneumonia and review the literature. The patient, a 37-year-old Saudi male with no significant medical history was admitted with fever, respiratory distress and scrotal ulceration. Scrotal swabs and blood cultures grew MRSA. Imaging studies showed necrotizing pneumonia. Physical examination and echocardiographic findings revealed no evidence of endocardi
