Religiosity and political worldviews as protective factors during an ongoing national trauma.

This study examined religiosity and political worldviews, specifically government support, as socio-cultural mechanisms that buffer anxiety and promote coping during an ongoing war. Drawing on Terror Management Theory (TMT) and Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, we hypothesized that these orientations would be associated with higher individual and collective coping: individual resilience, societal resilience, perceived social cohesion, and hope, and with lower psychological distress, as well as better preservation of these resources over time. Data were collected across seven waves during

The Addis Declaration on Immunization: A binding reminder of the political support needed to achieve universal immunization in Africa.

While African countries have improved access to immunization since the start of the millennium, progress has stagnated in the last few years. One in five African children is not vaccinated with life-saving vaccines, and recent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) including yellow fever, measles, and meningitis, among others point to gaps in immunization coverage as well as disease surveillance. In 2017, African Heads of State endorsed the Addis Declaration on Immunization (ADI) at the 28th African Union Summit and committed to ensuring universal access to immunization across the co

Eliminating malaria in Nigeria: insights from Egypt's success and pathways to sustainable eradication.

Malaria remains a critical public health challenge in Nigeria, with the country bearing the highest global burden of the disease. Despite ongoing efforts, malaria continues to exact significant health, economic, and social tolls. Inspired by Egypt's successful malaria elimination strategies, this study explores actionable interventions that Nigeria can adapt to achieve sustainable malaria eradication. Egypt's achievements were driven by robust surveillance systems, vector control measures, political commitment, community engagement, and international collaboration. These strategies are assesse

Interlinkages between Climate Change and Food Systems: The Impact on Child Malnutrition-Narrative Review.

The pandemics of obesity, undernutrition, and climate change represent severe threats to child health. They co-occur; interact with each other to produce sequelae at biological, psychological, or social levels; and share common underlying drivers. In this paper, we review the key issues concerning child diet and nutritional status, focusing on the interactions with climate and food systems. Inadequate infant and young child feeding practices, food insecurity, poverty, and limited access to health services are the leading causes of malnutrition across generations. Food system industrialization

'If someone donates $1000, they support you. If they donate $100 000, they have bought you'. Mixed methods study of tobacco, alcohol and gambling industry donations to Australian political parties.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Business corporations' use of political donations to garner political influence is especially troubling in relation to products that damage human health. We sought to investigate patterns of donations to Australian political parties from tobacco, alcohol and gambling industry actors and the experiences of key informants. DESIGN AND METHODS: We analysed public data on federal and state donations for 10 years to June 2015. We conducted 28 semi-structured interviews with current and former politicians, ex-political staffers and other key informants, concerning the role playe

Ethno-ophthalmology in the Egyptian delta: an historical systems approach to ethnomedicine in the Middle East.

Ethnomedical studies of the Middle East may be enriched by a long-term historical perspective, which takes into consideration the complex syncretism, through time, of both literate and nonliterate medical systems in this region, as well as the tumultuous history of conquest and colonialism in the Middle East. In this paper, the authors place the seemingly idiosyncratic, local, 'ethno-ophthalmological' practices of one northern Egyptian community, which is afflicted by the binding eye disease, trachoma, into a broader historico-political context, through examination of the four major literate m

Political participation in an electoral autocracy: latent profiles of efficacy, interest, ideology, and trust in Hungary.

Hungary is often portrayed as an exceptional case of democratic backsliding driven by unique political and cultural conditions. We tested this view by analyzing five waves of European Social Survey data from Hungary (2014-2023) and conducting latent profile analyses based on political interest, political self-efficacy, institutional trust, and ideological self-placement. Across time, four recurring profiles emerged-Moderate system believers, Committed Fidesz voters, Alienated citizens, and Diverse opposition members-with a fifth profile, the Uncommitted opposition, appearing in 2020 and 2023.

Spanish newsreel NO-DO (1943-1975). The diffusion of science as a legitimizing instrument of the Franco regime: polio and other immuno-preventable diseases.

The official NO-DO newsreels were screened in Spain on a weekly basis from 1943 to 1981. These official news and documentary programmes were compulsory in cinemas from the moment they were first produced until the end of the Francoist dictatorship (1975). NO-DO held an information monopoly and was used as the regime's propaganda tool to indoctrinate the population, building stories tailored to the regime's interests and masking social realities. In this study, we examined newsreels on medical subjects relating to diseases preventable by vaccination. A majority of reports centred on poliomyelit

Towards elimination of viral hepatitis in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia: insights from the Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board (VHPB).

The Visegrad Group - the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia - face shared challenges in preventing and controlling viral hepatitis. A regional meeting convened by the Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board evaluated health systems, epidemiology, and national policies, revealing accomplishments and needs for prevention, screening, diagnosis, and linkage to care of viral hepatitis. Universal hepatitis B (HBV) vaccination exists, yet vaccine hesitancy and incomplete coverage threaten progress, while surveillance and registries remain fragmented. Access to hepatitis C (HCV) treatment has impro

Intergenerational trauma: A silent contributor to mental health deterioration in Afghanistan.

Multiple theories, including family systems, epigenetics, attachments, and many others, have proposed mechanisms for trauma transmission from generation to generation. Intergenerational trauma is today one of the most important psychosocial issues affecting Afghans' mental health and psychology, with the potential to affect subsequent generations. A variety of factors have impacted the mental health of the Afghan population over the years, including years of conflict, socioeconomic instability, natural disasters, chronic drought conditions, economic turmoil, and food insecurity, all of which h

Combating vaccine hesitancy and other 21st century social determinants in the global fight against measles.

The year 2019 marked the return of measles after almost two decades of unprecedented successes in global vaccination programs. Measles transmission due to sharp declines in measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination coverage is now widespread among nations that previously saw impressive public health gains including Philippines, DR Congo, Madagascar, Samoa, many in Europe, and the United States and Venezuela in the Americas. Key determinants include the interruption of vaccine health systems due to war, conflict, and political instability; food insecurity and urbanization; and an increasingly glo

How Academic Medicine Can Amplify Truth Amid the Noise of Misinformation, Inaccuracies, and Lies.

Inaccurate statements and lies from public figures and political and government leaders have the power to exacerbate dangerous upheavals in our political, health care, and social environments. The widespread misinformation, inaccuracies, and lies about the COVID-19 pandemic (about the origin of the virus, the severity of illness, vaccination, and "cures," to name a few) illustrate the potentially disastrous consequences of false information. Academic medicine must recognize the dangers of such lies and inaccuracies, particularly those related to health, and must understand their sources in tra

Political cost, value balance, and the optimization of university public health emergency governance: an evolutionary game and small signal analysis.

In major public-health emergencies, universities constitute core nodes within a multi-actor intersecting governance network composed of governments, universities, students, media and social-sector organizations. While uniform closed-campus management can maximize the protection of students' physical health, it frequently overlooks students' mental-health needs and value-recognition concerns, which may exacerbate tensions between universities and students. Taking political costs associated with university pandemic governance as the research subject, this study integrates systems theory and cost

Prioritisation in speech and language therapy departments in Scotland and Malaysia.

This study investigates how prioritisation in health services have influenced speech and language therapy (SLT) services in Scotland in prioritising their caseload. Additionally, it evaluates how current prioritisation systems may contribute towards the development of the SLT service in Malaysia. Health, education and social agencies in Malaysia were contacted and a literature review was conducted. Information on prioritisation systems used in Malaysia was unavailable. Prioritisation systems from seven SLT departments within Scotland were investigated, of which three SLT managers took part in

Folk-economic beliefs: An evolutionary cognitive model.

The domain of "folk-economics" consists in explicit beliefs about the economy held by laypeople, untrained in economics, about such topics as, for example, the causes of the wealth of nations, the benefits or drawbacks of markets and international trade, the effects of regulation, the origins of inequality, the connection between work and wages, the economic consequences of immigration, or the possible causes of unemployment. These beliefs are crucial in forming people's political beliefs and in shaping their reception of different policies. Yet, they often conflict with elementary principles

Beyond the anti-racist reason: a postcolonial perspective on pandemic politics.

This article interrogates the politics of the COVID-19 pandemic from a postcolonial perspective. One alarming concern during the pandemic is the rise of racism against Asians all over the world. However, little explored behind media reports are the legacies, tensions and challenges left by imperial domination inherited from the past, especially within the postcolonial regimes in Asia, such as Hong Kong and China. Drawing upon postcolonialism as a critical lens, this article makes perceptible the intractable issues of health politics. Postcolonial challenges shown by COVID-19 include immigratio

Attitudes and practices of Sudan's health sector partners towards strengthening and utilising the national health system components (2015-2022).

While the emphasis on strengthening and utilising a unified national system has gained momentum in discussions among health partners throughout the world, there are evident discrepancies between commitments and practice. Sudan presents an interesting case where the last decade has witnessed major political changes that have influenced health sector partnerships. This study investigates the shifts in attitudes and practices of Sudan's health sector partners towards strengthening and utilising the national health system, specifically focusing on the components of financial management, procuremen

The Legislative Trajectory of Korea's Nursing Act: Insights From the Multiple Streams Framework.

BACKGROUND: The enactment of the Korean Nursing Act emerged through a prolonged and conflict-laden policy process shaped by workforce instability, interprofessional conflict, and changing political conditions within the Korean healthcare system. Recent healthcare crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2024 healthcare service vacuum, further intensified policy attention toward nursing workforce governance and healthcare system sustainability. AIM: This study examines the legislative trajectory and postenactment policy developments of the Korean Nursing Act between 2005 and 2025 throug

Systems thinking in public health policy development.

A systems thinking approach is essential for public health policy development, offering a framework to navigate the dynamic complexities inherent in public health issues. This methodology enables policymakers to comprehend the interconnections within public health systems and anticipate the potential consequences of policy implementation. This paper explores the application of systems thinking and modelling methodologies in addressing key public health concerns, such as obesity, infectious diseases, and tobacco use. A review of the literature illustrates how systems thinking informs evidence-b
