BACKGROUND: Nevus density in children, a well-known risk factor for malignant melanoma, depends both on constitutional factors and on previous ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Secular trends of childhood UV exposure could thus be indirectly monitored by repeated standardized surveys assessing nevus density in children, such as the "childhood monitoring of nevus density (CMONDE-Study)".
METHODS: Two complete surveys comprising all children at the time of school enrolment were performed in the city and county of Göttingen, Germany, during the years 1999 and 2000. A total of 4252 children with a media

For evaluation of the community health program, 1543 inhabitants aged 40-79 years were recruited as cohort members in Miyama Village, Wakayama Prefecture. In this cohort, bone mineral density (BMD) of 400 subjects, 50 males and 50 females each randomly selected from each of four age strata, was measured at the lumbar spine and femur neck by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Information on exposure to possible risk factors was obtained from a self-administered questionnaire. The results were as follows; BMD at the lumbar spine and femur neck in women aged 70-79 who maintained an exercise habit

UNLABELLED: This study was performed in 1000 adult Italian subjects to focus on the effects of dietary calcium intake on bone health. A higher fracture risk appears to be associated with a reduced calcium intake. An adequate daily calcium intake is recommended to counteract osteoporotic fractures.
PURPOSE: The principal aim of the present study was to focus on the effects of dietary calcium intake on bone mineral density (BMD) and fragility fractures in a representative sample of an adult Italian outpatient population.
METHODS: The study group consisted of 1000 consecutive adult Italian subj

The aim of this study was to detect mutations in the genes coding for the low-density lipoprotein receptor and apolipoprotein B in patients of Southeast Asian origin with clinically diagnosed familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and to relate these findings with the observed lower incidence of coronary heart disease in this part of the world. A total of 86 unrelated patients with FH were selected on clinical grounds, and complete DNA analysis of the low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-receptor and apolipoprotein B (apoB) genes by DGGE and DNA-sequencing was performed. In the majority (73%) of the coho

It is not known whether asthma constitutes a risk factor for osteoporosis or what the impact is of inhaled corticosteroids on bone mineral density (BMD). The study population (n = 3,222) was a random stratified sample from the Kuopio Osteoporosis Study, which included all women 47 to 56 yr of age residing in Kuopio Province, Eastern Finland. Spinal and femoral BMDs were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The BMD values of 119 asthmatics were cross-sectionally compared with those of 3,103 nonasthmatics. Of the 119 asthmatic women, 28 had not used corticosteroids, 65 had used oral

Bone mineral density (BMD) measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) can be expressed in terms of standard deviations, above or below mean young adult T-scores and above or below age-matched Z-scores. The differences between the left neck of the femur (LN), right neck of the femur (RN) and lumbar spine (L2-L4) were statistically significant, irrespective of whether expressed as T-scores or Z-scores. Therefore skeletal status assessment should involve as many sites as practically possible. Considering the low radiation dose and short scanning time, it is suggested that at least the

Understanding how variation in key abiotic and biotic factors interact at ecologically relevant spatial scales is crucial for predicting population dynamics, distributions, and abundances. This is especially true for vectors that transmit human pathogens. However, studies investigating the effects of environmental variation on vectors have typically investigated environmental factors in isolation or in laboratory experiments that examine constant environmental conditions that often do not occur in the field. To address these limitations, we conducted a semi-field experiment in Athens, Georgia,

After the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, peaks of common infectious diseases surpassed pre-pandemic levels, raising questions about causes and ways to monitor these changes. A proposed measure, the Pathogen Population Density (PPD) score, could help track these shifts. PPD refers to the concentration of infectious agents within a population at a given time and location, serving as a potential indicator of infection levels in susceptible individuals at the population level. It is likely that PPD remains relatively stable within a specific community, as an equilibrium forms between infections …

Most small rodent species display cyclic fluctuations in their population density. The mechanisms behind these cyclical variations are not yet clearly understood. Density-dependent effects on reproductive function could affect these population variations. The fossorial water vole ecotype, Arvicola terrestris, exhibits multi-year cyclical dynamics with outbreak peaks. Here, we monitored different water vole populations over 3 years, in spring and autumn, to evaluate whether population density is related to male reproductive physiology. Our results show an effect of season and inter-annual facto…

INTRODUCTION: In the aging process of the body, in addition to changes in fat and muscle content, there is also bone loss, implying the possibility of a strong muscle-bone-lipid link. In this study, we initially investigated the relationship between lumbar BMD and low muscle mass and the relationship between "muscle-bone-lipid."
METHODS: The datasets from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 were used in a cross-sectional investigation. BMD and appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM) were measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and appendicular skelet

Genotyping by sequencing approaches have been widely applied in major crops and are now being used in horticultural crops like berries and fruit trees. As the original and largest producer of cultivated blueberry, the United States maintains the most diverse blueberry germplasm resources comprised of many species of different ploidy levels. We previously constructed an interspecific mapping population of diploid blueberry by crossing the parent F1#10 (Vaccinium darrowii Fla4B × diploid V. corymbosum W85-20) with the parent W85-23 (diploid V. corymbosum). Employing the Capture-Seq technology de

At 28 days post-infection autoinfective third-stage larvae (L3a) of Strongyloides stercoralis occurred in jirds infected with 10,000 infective third-stage (L3i). Previously in the jird model of strongyloidiasis, autoinfection had been seen in immunologically immature or immunosuppressed jirds only. The heavily infected jirds described herein had a strong anti-L3i immune response at the same time the living L3a were found in their tissues. This was demonstrated by the rapid killing of L3i in subcutaneously implanted diffusion chambers. No decrease of intestinal motility was observed in these he

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia is associated with cognitive impairment, but the exact link between them remains controversial. The non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) is an emerging plasma marker for comprehensively assessing lipid metabolism, and its association with cognitive impairment has not yet been elucidated. OBJECTIVE: This investigation intends to delineate the association between NHHR and cognitive impairment. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed utilizing data from the baseline survey of China Health and Retirement Lo

BACKGROUND: Inuit are considered to be vulnerable to cardiovascular disease because their lifestyles are becoming more Westernized. During sequence analysis of Inuit individuals at extremes of lipid traits, we identified 2 nonsynonymous variants in low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR), namely p.G116S and p.R730W.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Genotyping these variants in 3324 Inuit from Alaska, Canada, and Greenland showed they were common, with allele frequencies 10% to 15%. Only p.G116S was associated with dyslipidemia: the increase in LDL cholesterol was 0.54 mmol/L (20.9 mg/dL) per allele (P=5.

Coexistence between cooperative and cheating individuals remains a central puzzle in social evolution. Here, we investigate how population density modulates coexistence using Kluyveromyces lactis strains that interact via physical attachment. Snowflake (cooperative) strains flocculate into multicellular clusters that settle efficiently, while Co-Uni (cheater) strains remain planktonic unless attached to Snowflakes, enabling them to exploit settling benefits without contributing to cluster formation. We manipulated settling density over 15 transfers (~60 generations) to alter encounter rates be…

At their southern range limits in North America, moose (Alces alces) experience increased overlap with white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and associated parasites through shared habitat use. Moose persist at low densities in New York state, USA, and are incidental hosts to multiple pathogenic endoparasites. Understanding the contributions of endoparasitism to moose morbidity and mortality requires investigation into their health status and drivers of parasite infection. We summarized health data from 60 live-captured and 191 opportunistically necropsied moose (spanning 2000-23) and use
