Repercussions of perceived threat to health in the Spanish population.

Studies have shown that COVID-19 has had a worldwide psychological impact. Confinement due to COVID-19 has had important repercussions on the mental health of the general population, with high levels of stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder, and so forth. Similarly, important labor, economic and social changes taking place are affecting people's well-being. The objective of this study was to analyze the repercussions of perceived threat from COVID-19 on the mental health of the population, and to evaluate the mediating role of perceived economic impact. The parti

Bone Health and Denosumab Discontinuation in Oncology Populations.

Managing bone health after denosumab cessation is a commonly encountered challenge. Although the “rebound phenomenon” is generally recognized by endocrinologists in the context of osteoporosis, it is not as widely understood in the context of bone metastases and cancer. This commentary reviews the evidence on the efficacy and safety of various bone health agents in mitigating the “rebound phenomenon” in cancer populations.

Oral health status in a population of Nigerian diabetics.

Oral manifestations of diabetes mellitus have been documented, but the effect of glycemic control on the oral tissues has been scantily reported. The oral health status of 65 metabolically controlled adult diabetic patients attending the Diabetes Clinic of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, was prospectively assessed over six months and compared with that of 54 non-diabetic acting as controls. The mean duration of diabetes was 100.5+/-85.1 months. The difference in periodontal status of the patients and control, assessed using the Community Periodontal Ind

Health and employment of a female population in an urban area.

The authors discuss the results of a survey of women aged 25 to 50 living in a university town in southern France (Montpellier). Morbidity of these women (reported health problems, consultation with health care professionals etc) was analysed as a function of whether or not they were employed out of the home. Overall, differences were minimal; after correction for demographic factors, the only significant difference was more frequent reports of fatigue, overwork or nervousness in the employed women. Satisfaction with life situations was more closely correlated with health than was employment p

Parental Influence on Mental Health Therapy for a Health Disparity Population: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Parents influence children's access and engagement in mental health therapy, through factors like parent attitudes and session attendance. This is especially true for transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) youth, who benefit most from affirming therapy - compared to non-affirming therapy - which is tailored to support a client's gender and linked with enhanced treatment engagement. To support TGD youth's ability to engage in optimal treatment, it is important to understand parent's influence on youth's therapy experiences. OBJECTIVE: Analyze qualitative data from TGD youth, parents,

Measuring the Health of an Invisible Population: Lessons from the Colorado Transgender Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Transgender people, those whose gender identity does not match their sex assigned at birth, face barriers to receiving health care. These include discrimination, prohibitive cost, and difficulty finding transgender-inclusive providers. As transgender identities are not typically recognized in public health research, the ability to compare the health of the transgender population to the overall population is limited. OBJECTIVE: The Colorado Transgender Health Survey sought to explore current disparities and their effects on the health of transgender people in Colorado. DESIGN AND

A mismatch between population health literacy and the complexity of health information: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Low health literacy is associated with poorer health and higher mortality. Complex health materials are a barrier to health. AIM: To assess the literacy and numeracy skills required to understand and use commonly used English health information materials, and to describe population skills in relation to these. DESIGN AND SETTING: An English observational study comparing health materials with national working-age population skills. METHOD: Health materials were sampled using a health literacy framework. Competency thresholds to understand and use the materials were identified. Th

Does the public health education affect health inequality among the migrant population in China?

BACKGROUND: As an essential component of public health infrastructure, public health education plays an important role in advancing health equity. In China, the large migrant population, while contributing substantially to socioeconomic development, continues to face significant health risks and inequalities due to frequent rural-to-urban mobility and occupational transitions. These issues not only undermine the well-being of migrants but also impede balanced social and economic progress. In this context, the present study systematically investigated the impact of public health education on he

Bladder health in US women: population-based estimates from the RISE FOR HEALTH study.

BACKGROUND: Bladder health encompasses total bladder well-being and not merely the absence of urinary symptoms. While much is known about the prevalence of urinary symptoms in women, little is known about the distribution of bladder health (eg, optimal to poor). OBJECTIVE: We report the distributions of multiple dimensions of bladder health and function in a population-based sample of community-dwelling women, overall and separately in women without urinary symptoms to begin to explore bladder health dimensions that may precede the onset of symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: RISE FOR HEALTH is a region

Willingness of population health survey participants to provide personal health information and biological samples.

BACKGROUND: Biological sample collection and data linkage can expand the utility of population health surveys. The present study investigates factors associated with population health survey respondents' willingness to provide biological samples and personal health information. METHODS: Using data from the 2019 Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Monitor survey (n = 2,827), we examined participants' willingness to provide blood samples, saliva samples, probabilistic linkage, and direct linkage with personal health information. Associations of willingness to provide such information …

Measuring population health: correlates of the Health Utilities Index among English and French Canadians.

This study used cross-sectional data from the 1994/95 National Population Health Survey (NPHS) in Canada. The objective of the study was to examine the relationship between several established correlates of health status in the general population and the Health Utilities Index (HUI), a multi-dimensional, preference-based measure of health status. Analyses were carried out separately for the English-speaking (n = 9,853) and French-speaking (n = 1,519) respondents. The index correlated strongly with self-ratings of health status and functional disability and varied as expected according to age, …

No Time for That: Health Care Economics and Population Health Limitations of Anal Cancer Screening.

High-resolution anoscopy has become an integral component of recommended anal cancer screening in broad populations. While high-resolution anoscopy has been shown to decrease the rate of anal cancer in high-risk populations with known high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, it may have low utility as a broader population screening tool. Its applicability and implementation are limited by the current number of trained providers, high monetary costs, and high opportunity costs to patients and providers. Efforts to enhance its attractiveness should focus on decreasing the ratio of the number
