Parasites from Indo-Pacific hump-backed dolphins (Sousa chinensis) and finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides) stranded in Hong Kong.

Between 1993 and 1998, 28 Indo-Pacific hump-backed dolphins (Sousa chinensis) and 32 finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocoenoides) stranded in Hong Kong territorial waters were examined postmortem for parasites. The nematode Halocercus pingi was discovered in the lungs of one hump-backed dolphin and in 10 finless porpoises, typically within abscesses or granulomata, and they were frequently accompanied by a catarrhal exudate and lesions characteristic of pneumonia. Seven of the 10 finless porpoises were calves with substantial lungworm infections, and three were neonates with visible fetal fold…

Temporal Increases in Mercury Concentrations are Associated with Increased Risk of Death by Infectious Disease in Harbour Porpoises (Phocoena Phocoena).

Trace elements, particularly heavy metals like mercury, pose significant risks to marine ecosystems due to their toxic and bioaccumulative p … nd indices of health, like infectious disease. Using liver tissue samples of 738 UK-stranded harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) collected between 1990 and 2021, we found mercury and selenium concentrations have increased, in contrast to declines in cadmium and lead. Spatial analyses revealed that mercury concentrations are highest at lower latitudes, whil …

Blast injury on harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from the Baltic Sea after explosions of deposits of World War II ammunition.

Harbour porpoises are under pressure from increasing human activities. This includes the detonation of ammunition that was dumped in large amounts into the sea during and after World War II. In this context, forty-two British ground mines from World War II were cleared by means of blasting in the period from 28 to 31 August 2019 by a NATO unit in the German Exclusive Economic Zone within the marine protected area of Fehmarn Belt in the Baltic Sea, Germany. Between September and November 2019, 24 harbour porpoises were found dead in the period after those clearing events along the coastline of …

Accumulation of trace elements in harbour porpoises and their selected helminths: a study from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

Marine ecosystems are increasingly affected by anthropogenic stressors, including pollution with trace elements. Trace elements (TE) can bio … analysed the concentrations of eleven TE (Ag, As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Sn, Sr and Zn) in harbour porpoises and their helminths, with a particular focus on nematodes. Our findings revealed that certain elements such as Fe, Mn, Zn, As, Co and Cd were accumulated to a higher degree in parasites than in host tissues. Additionally, differences in accumulation …

Multicentric plasmacytoma in a harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena off the coast of Whidbey Island, Washington State, USA.

Necropsy of a female adult pregnant harbor porpoise Phocoena phocoena revealed a multicentric plasmacytoma. The plasmacytoma infiltrated the cranial lung lobes, mediastinal lymph nodes and the spleen. Diagnosis was based on gross, histopathologic and immunohistochemical studies. Histopathology revealed a diffuse proliferation of atypical pleomorphic neoplastic round cells with plasmacytic features. Positive immunohistochemistry with anti-CD79a and anti-CD20 antibody markers and anti-multiple myeloma oncogene 1 (MUM-1) for plasmacytoma confirmed this neoplasm to be of B-cell origin. This is the

Anisakis spp. induced granulomatous dermatitis in a harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena and a bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus.

Cetaceans are well known definitive hosts of parasitic nematodes of the genus Anisakis (Nematoda: Anisakidae). Anisakid nematodes are also a health hazard for humans, potentially causing gastrointestinal infections or allergic reactions following the consumption of infected fish. In marine mammals, the nematodes develop from third-stage larvae to adults in the stomachs. In the first (or fore-) stomach, these parasites are typically associated with mucosal ulceration; parasites have not been identified in other organs. Two small cetaceans, a bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus and a harbour p

Lungworm infections in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in the German Wadden Sea between 2006 and 2018, and serodiagnostic tests.

Pseudaliid lungworm (Metastrongyloidea) infections and associated secondary bacterial infections may severely affect the health status of harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in German waters. The presented retrospective analysis including data from 259 harbour porpoises stranded between 2006 and 2018 on the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein's North Sea coast showed that 118 (46%) of these stranded individuals harboured a lungworm infection. During this 13-year period, a significant difference in annual lungworm prevalence was only observed between the years 2006 and 2016. Lungworm c…

Phenotypical characterization of changes in thymus and spleen associated with lymphoid depletion in free-ranging harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena).

Harbor porpoises from the North and Baltic Seas exhibit a higher incidence of bacterial infections compared to whales from less polluted arctic waters. Furthermore, thymic atrophy and splenic depletion, associated with elevated concentrations of environmental contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) body burdens, have been found in wildlife harbor porpoises. Thus, there is currently a debate about the potential adverse effect of xenobiotics on the immune system and therefore on the health status of this and other marine mammal species. The …

Drift and Selection in a Recently Colonized Sea: The Genomic Basis of Adaptation to Low-Salinity Waters in Baltic Harbour Porpoises.

Understanding how demography and natural selection interact during colonization of novel environments is a central question in evolutionary biology. The Baltic Sea region combines one of the world's strongest salinity gradients with a well-characterized postglacial history of less than ~12,000 years. The harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is distributed across this gradient as three populations-the North Sea, Belt Sea and Proper Baltic Sea populations. Using whole genome resequencing data from 59 individuals, we reconstructed the demographic history of Baltic colonization and identified geno

Anisakid nematode species identification in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from the North Sea, Baltic Sea and North Atlantic using RFLP analysis.

Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) are the only native cetacean species in the German North and Baltic Seas and the final host of Anisakis (A.) simplex, which infects their first and second gastric compartments and may cause chronic ulcerative gastritis. Anisakis simplex belongs to the family Anisakidae (Ascaridoidea, Rhabditida) as well as the phocine gastric nematode species Pseudoterranova (P.) decipiens and Contracaecum (C.) osculatum. These nematode species are the main causative agents for the zoonosis anisakidosis. The taxonomy of these genus with life cycles including crustaceans an…

Detection of Phocoena Pestivirus and Neutralizing Antibodies in Harbor Porpoises Found Dead at the North Sea and Baltic Sea Coasts.

In 2019, a marine pestivirus, Phocoena pestivirus (PhoPeV), family Pestiviridae, was described for the first time. To date, the impact of PhoPeV infections on harbor porpoises is still unknown. Therefore, a screening study was carried out on harbor porpoises found dead on the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts during 2021-2025. Analysis of organ samples collected from 84 harbor porpoises by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR showed the presence of PhoPeV RNA in samples from five animals (5.9%). Infectious virus was isolated from two of these samples. Phylogenetic analysis showed a close relati…

Behavioral reactions of harbor porpoises to impact pile driving noise are predicted by the auditory frequency weighted sound pressure level.

Offshore impact pile driving is a major source of high level underwater noise that can disturb marine mammal behavior tens of kilometers away. Projects involving pile driving are therefore subject to environmental impact assessments, which include modelling of the spatial extent of the behavioral disturbance. Reliable predictions about behavioral reaction distances require robust estimates of the minimum received levels of noise above which animals are likely to respond. Studies of reactions of harbor porpoises to pile driving noise in the wild and playback in captivity were identified, and re…

Latencies of click-evoked auditory responses in a harbor porpoise exceed the time interval between subsequent echolocation clicks.

Most auditory evoked potential (AEP) studies in echolocating toothed whales measure neural responses to outgoing clicks and returning echoes … with latencies of 90 and 160 ms, which are longer than 99% of click intervals used by echolocating porpoises, demonstrating that some higher-order echo processing continues well after the next click emission even during slow clicking. We propose that some of the echo information, such as range to evasive prey, is used to guide vocal-motor responses within …

Time-varying auditory gain control in response to double-pulse stimuli in harbour porpoises is not mediated by a stapedial reflex.

Echolocating animals reduce their output level and hearing sensitivity with decreasing echo delays, presumably to stabilize the perceived echo intensity during target approaches. In bats, this variation in hearing sensitivity is formed by a call-induced stapedial reflex that tapers off over time after the call. Here, we test the hypothesis that a similar mechanism exists in toothed whales by subjecting a trained harbour porpoise to a series of double sound pulses varying in delay and frequency, while measuring the magnitudes of the evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs). We find that the r

Temporary shift in masked hearing thresholds in a harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) after exposure to seismic airgun stimuli.

An auditory study was conducted to derive data on temporary threshold shift (TTS) induced by single impulses. This information should serve as basis for the definition of noise exposure criteria for harbor porpoises. The measurements of TTS were conducted on a harbor porpoise by measuring the auditory evoked potentials in response to amplitude-modulated sounds. After obtaining baseline hearing data the animal was exposed to single airgun stimuli at increasing received levels. Immediately after each exposure the animal's hearing threshold was tested for significant changes. The received levels …

Genital warts in Burmeister's porpoises: characterization of Phocoena spinipinnis papillomavirus type 1 (PsPV-1) and evidence for a second, distantly related PsPV.

We identified sequences from two distantly related papillomaviruses in genital warts from two Burmeister's porpoises, including a PV antigen-positive specimen, and characterized Phocoena spinipinnis papillomavirus type 1 (PsPV-1). The PsPV-1 genome comprises 7879 nt and presents unusual features. It lacks an E7, an E8 and a bona fide E5 open reading frame (ORF) and has a large E6 ORF. PsPV-1 L1 ORF showed the highest percentage of nucleotide identity (54-55 %) with human papillomavirus type 5, bovine papillomavirus type 3 (BPV-3) and Tursiops truncatus papillomavirus type 2 (TtPV-2). Mitogenomic and Ecological Perspectives on the Wide-Ridged Indo-Pacific Finless Porpoise Neophocaena phocaenoides: Toward Emerging Conservation Strategies.

Prior to this study, the narrow-ridged finless porpoise (Neophocaena asiaeorientalis) had been extensively studied across East Asia, whereas the wide-ridged finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides) remained comparatively poorly characterized throughout its broad geographic range, particularly in the Indian Ocean. This study addresses this gap through morphological, mitogenomic, and ecological analyses of an N. phocaenoides carcass from Kozhikode Beach, Arabian Sea, India. The specimen was identified as N. phocaenoides based on the absence of a dorsal fin, a broad dorsal ridge, a blunt beakl
