Older women who died by suicide: suicide means, sociodemographic and psychiatric risk factors, and other precipitating circumstances.

UNLABELLED: ABSTRACTBackground:US suicide rates among older women have substantially increased over the past decade. We examined potential differences in sociodemographic and risk/precipitating factors among older female suicide decedents who died by drug overdose versus firearms, hanging/suffocation, and other means, and postmortem toxicology results by suicide means. METHODS: Data are from the 2005 to 2015 US National Violent Death Reporting System (N = 12,401 female decedents aged 50 years and over). We used three logistic regression models, with overdose versus firearms, overdose versus h…

An audit of the precipitating factors for haemolytic crisis among glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase-deficient paediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is one of the most common genetic enzyme deficiencies leading to haemolytic anaemia. This study aimed to investigate the precipitating factors for haemolytic crisis in G6PD-deficient paediatric patients in Jordan. METHOD: A retrospective study of data from the records of 258 paediatric patients admitted to a major paediatric hospital in North Jordan from January 2001 until April 2007. Patients included were G6PD-deficient children who were admitted to the hospital secondary to an episode of haemolytic anaemia. RESULTS: Of 258 pa…

A preliminary study of filariasis related acute adenolymphangitis with special reference to precipitating factors and treatment modalities.

Episodic adenolymphangitis (ADL) is one of the important clinical manifestations of lymphatic filariasis. Recurrent ADLs contribute to the progress of the disease and also have important socioeconomic implications since they cause significant loss of man days. The present study was conducted in order to identify the precipitating factors responsible for ADL attacks and also to examine the different modalities of treatment. Sixty-five individuals with filariasis related ADL attacks, who are residents of Alleppey district (endemic for Brugia malayi) were studied. All efforts were taken to identi…

Is intimate partner abuse underestimated as a precipitating factor for venous thromboembolism in women?

Major and minor trauma increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), but violence against young women is not reported as a precipitating factor for thrombosis. Here, we report 20 cases of first VTE events in women of childbearing age after evidence of intimate partner violence. Other risk factors for VTE were often associated. In most cases, women did not report this state of violence at the first consultation and their doctors did not suspect it. We imagine that it is an underdiagnosed situation and should call for a systematic evaluation. Screening for intimate partner abuse could have

Beyond temperature and precipitation: ecological risk factors that modify malaria transmission.

Being able to identify the ecological factors that impact risk for malaria would confer important predictive capacity to target malaria control interventions in a community. Temperature and water available for breeding habitats have been shown to be important primary ecological factors that impact the distribution of the malaria vectors and the rate at which the mosquito and parasite develop. However, to this point, studies focusing on the local level have been met with many inconsistent results when assessing malaria risk using both temperature and precipitation. This paper reviewed existing

Hirschsprung's disease, a rare precipitating factor in neonatal perforated Meckel's diverticulum.

Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum (MD) during the neonatal period may occur in the presence of distal colon obstruction. Herein, we describe a unique case of a 2-day-old infant that presented with pneumoperitoneum, in which a perforated MD was induced by distal intestinal obstruction secondary to total colonic aganglionosis. In the setting of neonatal perforated MD found intraoperatively, the determination of the possible precipitating etiology is necessary. The clinical history of delayed passage of meconium is emphasized, and either a rectal or colon biopsy is recommended intraoperatively

Self-perception of factors that precipitate or inhibit seizures in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

PURPOSE: To assess self-perception of factors that precipitate or inhibit seizures in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-six males and 39 females with JME and mean age of 25.8+/-8.7 years were analysed. All patients completed a standardized questionnaire to assess for the presence or absence of precipitant or inhibitory factors for their seizures in a face-to-face interview. These data were statistically analysed through logistic and linear regression models and Phi coefficient. RESULTS: Ninety-two percent of the patients identified at least one pre

Precipitating factors leading to decompensation of chronic heart failure in the elderly patient in South-American community hospital.

BACKGROUND: Exacerbations of heart failure appear frequently associated with precipitating factors not directly related to the evolution of cardiac disease. There still a paucity of data on the proportional distribution of precipitating factors specifically in elderly patients. The aim of this study was to examine prospectively the precipitating factors leading to hospitalization in elderly patients with heart failure in our community hospital. METHODS: We evaluate elderly patients who need admissions for decompensate heart failure. All patients were reviewed daily by the study investigators …

Role of Stress as a Precipitating Factor of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease: A Case Series.

Easily mistaken for multiple neurological and psychiatric pathologies, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is still underdiagnosed, with a difficult, late, and often retrospective recognition. Furthermore, its pathophysiology is poorly understood, and to date, no intervention has proven effective in its prevention or associated morbidity and mortality. The authors present a series of two clinical cases that not only expose its natural history and challenging differential diagnosis but also warn of a potential impact of psychological and stressful factors in its predisposition and/or precipitation.

Circulating fibroblast growth factor-2 precipitates HIV nephropathy in mice.

People of African ancestry living with the human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) are at risk of developing HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN). Children with HIVAN frequently show high plasma fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) levels; however, the role of circulating FGF-2 in the pathogenesis of childhood HIVAN is unclear. Here, we explored how circulating FGF-2 affected the outcome of HIVAN in young HIV-Tg26 mice. Briefly, we demonstrated that FGF-2 was preferentially recruited in the kidneys of mice without pre-existing kidney disease, precipitating HIVAN by activating phosphorylated extrace

Another possible precipitating factor in multiple sclerosis: the exposure to organic solvents.

Recent clinical observations seem to indicate that a possible correlation may exist between the appearance of inflammatory diseases of the nervous system and exposure to organic solvents. In certain cases the patients could not be distinguished, either from the clinical or laboratory point of view, from typical cases of multiple sclerosis. These observations raise the problem of a possible action of organic solvents on the immunological responses, already described in different pathological conditions as a further possible precipitating factor in MS.

Bilateral nervus intermedius neuralgia with neurovascular contact: a case report highlighting hypertension and eczema as potential precipitating factors.

BACKGROUND: Nervus intermedius neuralgia (NIN) is a rare craniofacial pain syndrome. Bilateral involvement is extremely uncommon, and the pathophysiology and precipitating factors of NIN remain poorly understood. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old female presented with a 3-month history of bilateral paroxysmal stabbing deep ear pain triggered by cold wind and auricular pressure, superimposed on a persistent dull ache. She had a 5-year history of hypertension, with poor blood pressure control (140-160/90-105 mmHg) for four months preceding symptom onset. Otoscopic examination revealed bilateral …

Development of a checklist for systematic screening of precipitating factors in older patients admitted to hospital with delirium.

OBJECTIVES: Causes of delirium are often multiple in older people and a significant number of them are missed at the initial assessment. We wanted to develop a checklist to help clinicians to systematically screen for the most frequent and important causes of delirium in this population. METHODS: Three investigators, based on previous studies, drafted three possible checklist base models, comprising 18-29 items. A panel of 12 experts voted to choose one of the models, and then followed a modified Delphi consensus method to review each item and further develop the checklist. The consensus chec
