Hydrogel dressings for treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, decubitus ulcers and pressure injuries, are localised areas of injury to the skin or the underlying tissue, or both. Dressings are widely used to treat pressure ulcers and there are many different dressing options including hydrogel dressings. A clear and current overview of the current evidence is required to facilitate decision-making regarding dressing use for the treatment of pressure ulcers. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of hydrogel dressings on the healing of pressure ulcers in any care setting. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the fo…

Alginate dressings for treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, decubitus ulcers and pressure injuries, are localised areas of injury to the skin or the underlying tissue, or both. Dressings are widely used to treat pressure ulcers and there are many options to choose from including alginate dressings. A clear and current overview of current evidence is required to facilitate decision-making regarding dressing use for the treatment of pressure ulcers. This review is part of a suite of Cochrane reviews investigating the use of dressings in the treatment of pressure ulcers. Each review will focus on a part…

Electromagnetic therapy for treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers are defined as areas "of localized damage to the skin and underlying tissue caused by pressure, shear, friction and/or the combination of these". Electromagnetic therapy (EMT), in which electrodes produce an electromagnetic field across the wound, may improve healing of chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of EMT on the healing of pressure ulcers. SEARCH METHODS: For this update we searched the Cochrane Wounds Group Specialised Register (searched 12 July 2012); The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The C…

[Infected pressure ulcers: evaluation and management].

Pressure ulcers in elderly individuals can cause significant morbidity and mortality and are a major economic burden to the health care system. Prevention should be the ultimate objective of pressure ulcer care, and it requires an understanding of the pathophysiology leading to pressure ulcers and the means of reducing both intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors. Clinical examination often underestimates the degree of deep-tissue involvement, and its findings are inadequate for the detection of associated osteomyelitis. Microbiological data, if obtained from deep-tissue biopsy, are useful for di…

Clinical practice guidelines. Pressure ulcers in adults: prediction and prevention. Panel for the Prediction and Prevention of Pressure Ulcers in Adults.

This clinical practice guideline makes specific recommendations for identifying at-risk adults and for defining early interventions for preventing pressure ulcers. The guideline may also be used to treat Stage I pressure ulcers (nonblanchable erythema of intact skin). These guideline recommendations are not intended as the basis of care of infants and children, nor do they apply to individuals with existing Stage II or greater pressure ulcers or to individuals who are fully mobile.

Skin Ulcers: Prevention and Diagnosis of Pressure, Venous Leg, and Arterial Ulcers.

Pressure, venous leg, and arterial ulcers are common and costly skin conditions that affect patients in all clinical settings. Clinical features can help differentiate these ulcers. Pressure ulcers are associated with restricted mobility, poor perfusion, and compromised skin status. Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are attributed to chronic venous hypertension resulting from venous insufficiency or obstruction. Risk factors for a first VLU include previous nonvenous leg ulcer, male sex, chronic venous hypertension, and older age. Arterial ulcers result from skin and soft tissue ischemia due to arterio…

Acoustic pressure wound therapy in the treatment of stage II pressure ulcers.

Pressure ulcers are localized skin injuries secondary to unrelieved pressure or friction. Patients with immobility issues are at increased risk for developing pressure ulcers. In 2004, stricter federal regulations for prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers in institutional settings--eg, long-term care facilities--were introduced. Effective, low-cost treatments for pressure ulcers are needed; acoustic pressure wound therapy (APWT), a noncontact, low-frequency, therapeutic ultrasound system, is one option. A retrospective case series of six long-term care patients (two men and one woman, ag…

Rehabilitation Workforce Interventions for Pressure Ulcer Prevention: A Scoping Review.

Background: Pressure ulcers remain a prevalent and largely preventable adverse event across healthcare settings, particularly among people with impaired mobility and activity, and reduced self-care capacity. Although rehabilitation interventions address key risk factors for pressure ulcer development, their contributions are often implicit and fragmented in the literature. This review aims to systematically map rehabilitation interventions described in the literature for pressure ulcer prevention across healthcare settings. Methods: We conducted a scoping review following the Arksey and O'Mall…

[Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma masquerading as a pressure ulcer].

An 84-year-old man with a history of amputation and follicular lymphoma developed a non-healing ulcer on his stump, initially diagnosed as a pressure ulcer cause by the clinic and lack of B-symptoms. Despite wound care, the lesion worsened. A biopsy revealed de novo diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), non-germinal center subtype. This case highlights the need for malignancy screening in chronic wounds, particularly in high-risk patients, emphasizing the importance of biopsy when standard treatment fails.

Nanotechnological Antibacterial and Conductive Wound Dressings for Pressure Ulcer Prevention.

The development of pressure ulcers, associated with increased temperature and moisture in specific areas of the body, and the risk of microbial infections in patients lying in a static position for prolonged periods of time represents a serious issue in medicine. In order to prevent the formation of pressure ulcers, this work aims to present advanced nanostructured coatings developed by three research groups. Nanometric silver, ash and functionalized torrefied biomass were the basis for the treatment of wound dressings to improve thermal conductivity and antimicrobial properties of the convent…
