Fatty livers resembling those seen in the early stages of kwashiorkor have been produced in primates. Ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured in groups of human subjects with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), ocular hypertension (OHT), low-tension glaucoma (LTG), retinal degenerations (RD), in OHT volunteers treated with single doses of 2% epinephrine, 4% pilocarpine, 0.5% timolol or 1% p-amino-clonidine, and in normal subjects before and after exercise. The eyes and pineal glands from 10 monkeys immunized with S-antigen were studied using routine histopathological and immunohistochemical techniques. Seven out of 10 animals developed uveitis between 19 and 33 days after the initial immunization. Histopathology of the eyes harvested 70 days after immunization showed moderate to marked uveoretinitis, subretinal fibrosis, retinal necrosis and gliosis. We examined the in-vitro mechanical characteristics of the diaphragm and parasternal intercostal muscles in adult baboons. At optimal length (Lo) the parasternal intercostal muscles were consistently faster than the diaphragm as judged by a shorter time-to-peak tension and a reduced twitch-to-tetanus ratio. Intraocular granulomas associated with tuberculosis were observed in 2 subhuman primates (Ateles geoffroyi and Macaca mulatta). Bacterial cultures from lung tissues at the time of necropsy confirmed the presence of Mycobacterium bovis and M tuberculosis, respectively. The absence of generalized clinical signs in spite of systemic dissemination of the organisms in these cases and the public health significance of tuberculous infections emphasize the importance of proper observation and diagnostic procedures in primate colonies and display collections.
