DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Subjective wellbeing was assessed via a visual analogue scale and retrieved at admission to remand prison and then again after four and eight weeks. Characteristics of prisoners with neurodevelopmental disorders and difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found high rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) within the criminal justice system (CJS). However, little is understood about prisoners with neurodevelopmental disorders and difficulties (NDD) or their needs. This study aimed to identify prisoners with NDD and compare their characteristics with prisoners without NDD on a range of socio-demographic and social functioning measures. METHOD: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study carried out using face-to-face interviews w…

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy among HIV-infected prisoners.

Adherence, the act of following a course of medication in exactly the manner prescribed, is critical for the success of therapy. Adherence is influenced by many behavioural and social factors and incarceration might be one such factor. This study determined the level of adherence and reasons for non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy among 93 HIV-infected prisoners. Up to 56% of these patients had poor adherence. A similar rate of adherence was detected in prisoners after release. Problems with antiretroviral adherence among prisoners appear to be mostly linked to their deviant behaviour. Inm…

Frequent complaints of testicular lumps by young prisoners.

The definition of the age of young offenders was changed by an Act of Parliament (The Crime and Disorder Act 1998), which was implemented by the Home Office on 1 April 2000. This Act brought down the upper-age limit of young offenders from 20 to 17. Our objective was to investigate the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among this redefined group of young offenders. Among various types of STIs, we observed that a significant number of young prisoners had complaints of testicular lumps (35%), which were not reported in the past. We tried to find out the reason for this common complaint and …

[Prisoners, caregivers and volunteers faced with COVID-19].

An enclosed space with specific constraints, prison authorises volunteers to support seriously ill patients at the end of life. After receiving relevant training, these volunteers become members of an approved association and can enter compounds such as Fresnes penitentiary hospital in Val-de-Marne. While the missions of these volunteers have been disrupted by covid-19, solutions have been put in place to allow the connection with the prisoners to be maintained.

[UHSI in the somatic care system for prisoners].

Inter-regional secure hospital units have noted an increase in the complex pathologies and care load of detained patients they receive for somatic care in a short-stay scheduled hospitalisation. Communication between health care providers and prison staff is essential for the proper functioning of these closed units. Transmissions with level 1 health units are essential to ensure continuity of care upon the patient's return to custody.

Epidemiology and Treatment of Hepatitis B in Prisoners.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review details recent literature reports regarding Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and, in particular, Hepatitis B prevalence/incidence in incarcerated populations around the world. Furthermore, the review will summarize the national/international guidelines regarding HBV and look at diagnosis, vaccination, treatment, and linkage to care after release. Incarcerated settings also have higher rate…

Characteristics of Violent Crime Committed by Female Prisoners.

This study expands limited existing knowledge of the characteristics of violent crimes for which women in state prisons are incarcerated. An analysis was conducted utilizing survey data collected from female state prisoners by the U.S. Department of Justice for the Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities, 2004. The randomly selected, national sample consisted of 866 female state prisoners. Results suggest that the majority of the violent offenses occurred within the context of a relationship with the victim, most often in a domestic setting, and were influenced by the presence or ab…

Hospitalization Among HIV-Infected U.S. Marshals Service Prisoners.

The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) prisoner population is diverse and includes immigration violators, fugitives that have evaded apprehension, perpetrators of Medicaid fraud, and parole and probation violators. Unlike state and local jails, the USMS has numerous housing options for its prisoners. Given the unique characteristics, federal prisoners' quality of care, and subsequent clinical outcomes, may differ from those of state and local inmates. However, little is known about hospitalization rates and length of stay for HIV-positive USMS prisoners. The purpose of this study is to examine hospi…

Tests of Theories of Crime in Female Prisoners.

Several general theories of crime were tested with path models on 293 female prisoners in a U.S. State prison. The theories tested included Social Bond and Control, Thrill/Risk Seeking, and a new attachment-based Developmental Dynamic Systems model. A large battery of different instruments ranging from measures of risk taking, to a crime addiction scale, to Childhood Adverse Events, to attachments and clinical issues were used. The older general theories of crime did not hold up well under the rigor of path modeling. The new dynamic systems model was supported that incorporated adverse childho…
