Violent Victimization in the Prison Context: An Examination of the Gendered Contexts of Prison.

Currently there are few published, multilevel studies of physical assault victimization of prisoners. This study builds on the extant resear … n addition, the data suggest that 8% of the variance in victimization is due to the prison context. Prisons with high proportions of violent offenders, males, inmates from multiracial backgrounds, and inmates with major infractions had increased odds of victimization. Moreover, the sex-composition of the prison has significant main and interactive effects …

Healthcare considerations for aging people in prisons.

The number of older adults aged 50 years and above who are incarcerated is increasing rapidly around the world. Providing high quality healthcare for aging incarcerated populations requires tailored services and approaches that consider their unique needs in carceral environments. However, there is limited research on healthcare from the perspective of relevant interest-holders, which challenges the development of interventions to address unmet needs and improve healthcare quality. This study aimed to understand the perspectives of interest-holders on the healthcare considerations of aging pri

More than 120 countries report priso … A range of international standards exist that provide for the conditions and treatment of people in prisons to prevent prison overcrowding and protect them from its consequences. Nutritional Characteristics of Menus in State Prisons.

Nutrition-related health disparities plague prisons in the United States. Unregulated and inadequate prison menus may contribute to noncommunicable chronic health conditions in this vulnerable population. The purpose of this research was to assess nutrition offerings provided by prison menus. Researchers requested the most current version of all master menus and associated nutrition analyses for gendered and age-centric (pediatric vs geriatric) menus. Menu and nutrient data were extracted and entered into a spreadsheet for analysis. Prisons serve gendered or nongendered menus to the general po…

Experiences of midwifery care in English prisons.

BACKGROUND: In the United Kingdom (UK), all prisoners must receive healthcare equivalent to that available in the community. However, evidence suggests that equality in healthcare provision for perinatal women in UK prisons is not always achieved. The aim of this research was to examine pregnant women prisoners' and custody staffs' experiences and perceptions of midwifery care in English prisons. METHODS: A qualitative approach based on institutional ethnography was used to research women's experiences in three English prisons over a period of 10 months. In total, 28 women participated in aud…

Grave Disability in U.S. Jails and Prisons.

Many states authorize involuntary psychiatric care on the basis of grave disability, a legal standard often defined as a person's inability to provide for basic needs because of mental illness. Mental illness is prevalent in U.S. jails and prisons, and although correctional facilities must generally provide incarcerated people with basic necessities (e.g., food, clothing, and shelter), incarcerated people may still meet criteria for grave disability. This Open Forum examines the assessment and treatment implications of grave disability in correctional contexts and ways to support the well-bein…

Hepatitis C in Israeli prisons: status report.

The article discusses and analyzes the changes that have taken place since 2016 in Israeli policy with regard to the treatment, diagnosis an … the Israel Prison Service and not that of a medical body. This reality places the medical staff in prisons in a state of dual loyalty, and also means the prison healthcare system is excluded from national health plans and major sources of budgeting, leaving it without sufficient means to provide the necessary level of care. These problems plague the pris …

Gender and violence risk assessment in prisons.

Our study examines the association between Historical, Clinical, Risk Management-20: Version 2; Psychopathy Checklist-Revised; and Violence Risk Assessment Guide scores and violence perpetrated during incarceration by male and female inmates. Using a sample of 288 men and 183 women selected from prisons in 2 states, we used receiver operating characteristics analyses to assess the potential of these 3 measures to predict threatened, physical, or sexual prison violence measured in 2 ways: inmate self-report and formal institutional infractions. We found all 3 instruments to demonstrate moderate…

The Elusive Goal of Drug-Free Prisons.

BACKGROUND: Although there is a need for well-designed evaluations, international evidence shows that drugs frequently enter prisons and enforcement efforts are said to be linked to adverse events. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to examine drug enforcement within a federal prison system, overseen by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), and to detail competing perspectives. METHODS: Three main sources of data were used in this qualitative study: 16 interviews conducted between 2010 and 2012 with former CSC senior officials, former frontline staff, and external stakeholders; CSC research p…
