PURPOSE: Our objective was to assess, retrospectively, the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen treatment in radiation proctitis in all patients who have completed treatment for this disease at the Fremantle Hyperbaric Oxygen Unit. This unit is the only one of its kind in Western Australia.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients were assessed by a review of hospital records, blood bank records, and clinic review (if this was convenient), and all patients responded to a telephone survey. Patients were questioned regarding radiation proctitis symptoms and the degree to which each had improved.

Radiation therapy for malignant gynecologic disease and prostatic cancer has resulted in increased survival and cure rates. This modality has unfortunately produced debilitating radiation proctitis. BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy within pelvis is a vital component of curative therapy for urological, gynecological and rectal malignances. Chronic radiation proctopathy occurs in 5%-20% of patients following pelvic radiotherapy. BACKGROUND: Rectal blood loss is a common late sequel of radiation proctitis. Teleangiectasias appear in the mucosa in 2-5% of patients after radiotherapy of the pelvis. We report the case of a 65-year-old patient with peritonitis, septicaemia and toxic shock syndrome in whom the primary focus of infection was acute purulent proctitis with necrosis. Streptococcus pyogenes serotype T28R28 was isolated from blood culture and peritoneal pus. The patient recovered after a prolonged period of intensive therapy and four abdominal operations including anterior resection of the rectum. We believe this to be the first clinical description of streptococcal necrotizing proctitis.
