Diversity and professional excellence.

There are compelling moral and practical reasons why the memberships in professions should mirror the populations that they serve. In order to address this general issue more exactly, this essay will confine itself to a particular case as an emblem for the general point. The particular case is the profession of orthopedic surgeons in the United States. From an examination of this specific case, it is hoped that more general issues of racial, ethnic, and gender fairness within the professions will also be addressed.

What's in a Name? Assessing the Accuracy of Self-identifying as a Professional or Semi-Professional Gambler.

Growing interest in pursuing a professional gambling career has been accompanied by a rise in individuals self-identifying as professional gamblers. Whether this trend reflects an actual increase in individuals sustaining livelihoods from gambling or inaccurate appropriation of a now glamorized identity is unclear. Adopting a self-image of professional gambler in the absence of ability to earn a sustainable income from the activity may increase risk of problem gambling and deter help-seeking. However, extent of problem gambling in this cohort is uncertain. This study aimed to: (1) determine an

"The patient is awake and we need to stay calm": reconsidering indirect communication in the face of medical error and professionalism lapses.

BACKGROUND: Although speaking up is lauded as a critical patient safety strategy, it remains exceptionally challenging for team members to enact. Existing efforts to address the problem of silence among interprofessional teams involve training low-authority members to use direct language and unambiguous challenge scripts. The role or value of indirect communication in preventing medical error remains largely unexplored despite its pervasiveness among interprofessional teams. This study explores the role of indirect challenges in the face of medical error and professionalism lapses. METHODS: O…

Voice as a Marker of Professional Identity: Exploring Occupational Voice Use by Fitness Professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Fitness instructors (FIs) are professional voice users of the instructor type. They are required to use their voices to coach, motivate, and acknowledge the clientele while leading their classes or sessions. FIs are expected to recruit and retain clients to their sessions, and in order to do so, create themselves as a brand within the marketplace. FIs are at increased risk of developing dysphonia, yet few of them report concerns about this occupational risk factor. In order to devise risk mitigation plans and policies, it is essential to understand how these professionals use the

Defining Exposures in Professional Football: Professional American-Style Football Players as an Occupational Cohort.

Studies of professional American football players have shown that football-related activities lead to acute injuries and may have long-term adverse health outcomes including osteoarthritis, neurocognitive impairment, and cardiovascular disease. However, the full complement of what constitutes professional football exposure has yet to be effectively articulated. Most likely, professional football exposure encompasses a multifaceted array of experiences including head impacts and joint stresses, long-term pain medication use, dietary restrictions, and strenuous training regimens. To study the he

Review of cardiometabolic risk factors among current professional football and professional baseball players.

Data on the development of cardiovascular disease in professional football players are conflicting. Studies have documented a higher prevalence of obesity, lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, increased left ventricular and left atrial size, and higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome in former professional football linemen compared with nonlinemen. It has been suggested that former National Football League players are at risk for early cardiovascular disease and premature death. A print media report in 2006 indicated an increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease and early mo
