Vestibular, proprioceptive, and haptic contributions to spatial orientation.

The control and perception of body orientation and motion are subserved by multiple sensory and motor mechanisms ranging from relatively simple, peripheral mechanisms to complex ones involving the highest levels of cognitive function and sensory-motor integration. Vestibular contributions to body orientation and to spatial localization of auditory and visual stimuli have long been recognized. These contributions are reviewed here along with new insights relating to sensory-motor calibration of the body gained from space flight, parabolic flight, and artificial gravity environments. The contribution of vision and proprioception to judgements of finger proximity.

We sought to determine whether an increase in judged egocentric distance created by increasing vergence-specified distance would be negated when participants pointed at their own finger. It was found that ocular position dominates limb proprioception in the judgement of finger distance in the sagittal plane when vision is available. In contrast, an increase in perceived egocentric distance was largely attenuated by the presence of limb proprioception in reduced visual cue conditions. We conclude that the relative contribution of vergence to perceived distance depends upon the strength of the v…

The human glenohumeral joint. A proprioceptive and stability alliance.

The glenohumeral joint, because of its relatively poor osseous and capsuloligamentous stability, depends upon the proprioceptive and stabilizing capabilities of musculotendinous structures more than any other joint in the human body. The purpose of this review is to compare the morphology, histology, and sensorimotor functional relationships of the human glenohumeral joint with the more abundant animal research data. From a synthesis of this information, a proprioceptive and stability alliance is proposed for the human glenohumeral joint which is initiated by mechanoreceptor activation from ca

Proprioceptive consequences of tendon vibration during movement.

1. Previous studies have used tendon vibration to investigate kinesthetic illusions in the isometric limb and end point control in the movin … the arm was prevented, and the movement velocity was changed randomly from trial to trial, leaving proprioception as the only useful source of kinematic information with which to perform the task. 3. In randomly occurring trials, vibration was applied to the tendon of the biceps brachii, a muscle that lengthens during elbow extension. In some experiments the ti …

Vibration of calf muscles has reverse effects on right and left ankle proprioception in high and low proprioceptive performer groups.

PURPOSE: Previous research has found hemispheric asymmetries in the utilization of proprioceptive information. It is undetermined, however, if there is any change in asymmetry in proprioceptive function when external stimulation, such as vibration, is presented. The present study was to investigate the immediate effects of vibration stimulation (VS) on bilateral ankle proprioception. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six recreational male basketball players were included. Proprioception was assessed by using the active movement extent discrimination apparatus (AMEDA) in standing, and vibration was…

The Effect of Fatigue on Shoulder Proprioception: A Literature Review.

Recent findings suggest that most sports-related injuries occur during the latter stages of these activities, often due to fatigue, which can impair proprioception and increase the risk of injury. Proprioception can be divided into three categories: joint position sense, the sense of movement (kinesthesia), and the sense of force reproduction. While several studies have examined how exercise-induced fatigue affects various aspects of proprioception on lower limb joints, research focusing on the shoulder joint is limited. This comprehensive review of the effects of exercise-induced fatigue on s…

Proprioception and Cognitive Polarization in Autism: The Bipolar Tensile Model.

This article introduces the Bipolar Tensile Model, a neurosemiotic and integrative framework for understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD … ve configurations, such as operational rigidity, sensory disorganization, and repetitive behaviors. Proprioception is understood not as a peripheral sensory channel, but as a semiotic regulator of interhemispheric coherence and embodied self-awareness. Drawing on a narrative synthesis of clinical, neuropsychological, and neurophysiological literature - and suppo …

Proprioception as a sensory root for body and motor awareness.

The primary function of proprioception is to stabilize and protect the body. However, its role may extend beyond this fundamental function. Proprioceptive signals have been hypothesized to contribute to the emergence of body awareness (i.e. sense of ownership) and motor awareness (i.e. sense of agency). However, this hypothesis has never been explicitly empirically tested in neuropsychological studies involving a large sample of patients. We investigated this assumption in the context of pathological disturbances of body and motor awareness following right-hemisphere stroke. In an observationa…

Resting state functional connectivity associated with impaired proprioception post-stroke.

Deficits in proprioception, the knowledge of limb position and movement in the absence of vision, occur in ~50% of all strokes; however, our lack of knowledge of the neurological mechanisms of these deficits diminishes the effectiveness of rehabilitation and prolongs recovery. We performed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) on stroke patients to determine functional brain networks that exhibited changes in connectivity in association with proprioception deficits determined by a Kinarm robotic exoskeleton assessment. Thirty stroke participants were assessed for proprioce…

The proprioception of the knee joint following tibia plateau fractures.

Proprioception is a conscious and/or unconscious perception of position change in an extremity or joint in space. In our study our purpose was to evaluate whether the lower extremity proprioception in long term, is altered following tibia plateau fractures and to assess its relation with age and type of fracture. This retrospective study includes the evaluation of proprioception in 38 tibia plateau fracture patients (29 male, 9 female) of various types who were operated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) technique in our clinic, by comparison of both operated knee and unaffected …

Does knee joint proprioception alter following medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction?

BACKGROUND: This study firstly aimed to determine whether proprioception deficits, as measured by joint position sense (JPS), occur in people following recurrent patellar dislocations. Secondly, to determine whether JPS changes following medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction (MPFL) reconstruction for patellar instability. METHODS: Thirty people following recurrent patellar dislocation were recruited. Pre-operative JPS was assessed using the passive angle reproduction test. Through this, an assessor moved a participant's limb to a target position. This was returned to neutral, before f…

Proprioception and muscle torque deficits in children with hypermobility syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Sensorimotor deficits such as impaired joint proprioception and muscle weakness have been found in association with hypermobility syndrome (HMS) in adults. HMS is more common in children than adults, yet such deficits have not been adequately investigated in paediatric populations. It is therefore uncertain as to what sensorimotor deficits are present in children with HMS. This study investigated knee joint proprioception and muscle torque in healthy children and those with HMS. METHODS: Thirty-seven healthy children (mean age +/- s.d. = 11.5 +/- 2.6 yrs) and 29 children with HMS …

Knee joint proprioception in patients with posttraumatic recurrent patella dislocation.

In 30 healthy volunteers with clinically inconspicuous knee joints and nine patients with posttraumatic recurrent patella dislocation, the proprioceptive abilities of the knee joint were evaluated by an angle reproduction test. The results of the control group showed no gender- or dominant-specific difference. The patient group showed a significant deterioration of proprioceptive capability in the injured knee joint. Even in the contralateral, uninjured knee joint, the angle reproduction test result was significantly reduced compared with the control group. After applying an elastic knee banda

The effect of the hypermobility syndrome on knee joint proprioception.

Proprioceptive sensory feedback is utilized by the central nervous system for conscious appreciation of the position and movement of the bod … d acuity between the sexes (at 5 degrees P = 0.63, at 30 degrees P = 0.48). The increased acuity in proprioception observed towards full extension in the control population (P < 0.001) was absent in the HMS subjects (P = 0.596). Findings reported here suggest that HMS subjects have poorer proprioceptive feedback than controls. Reduced sensory feedback may lead t …
