Computer-aided prosthetic rehabilitation of a resected maxilla after mucormycosis using a quad zygomatic implant protocol with digital planning.

The rehabilitation of patient function and esthetics is essential from a social and psychological point of view. After a maxillary resection, the supporting structures that help provide retention or stability to a removable prosthesis are lacking. An effective, functional, straightforward, comfortable, and esthetic prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with a resected maxilla using a digital workflow is presented. The rehabilitation was done using a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufactured bar and clip-supported overdenture prosthesis over quad zygomatic implants.

Fluid Volume Management in Prosthesis Users: Augmenting Panel Release with Pin Release.

BACKGROUND: Management of fluid in the limbs is a challenge faced by people with disabilities. In prosthetics, a means for transtibial prosthesis users to stabilize their residual limb fluid volume during the day may improve socket fit. OBJECTIVE: To determine if releasing the panels and locking pin of a cabled-panel adjustable socket during socket release significantly improved limb fluid volume recovery and retention over releasing the panels alone. DESIGN: Repeated-measures experiment to assess the effects on limb fluid volume retention. SETTING: Participants were tested in a laboratory

A new implant for nasal reconstruction.

Extraoral implants have been used for many years to anchor silicone nasal prostheses. This report describes the design and use of a specially engineered bifunctional implant, which is placed via an intraoral approach, to simultaneously anchor nasal and oral prostheses for an edentulous patient who has undergone a complete rhinectomy. The bifunctional implant was designed and milled from commercially pure titanium using computer-aided design/computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology. The nasal part of the implant was designed to fit through the prepared site and protrude into the pir

Implant-supported prosthesis in a child with hereditary mandibular anodontia: the use of ball attachments.

This report describes the provision of an implant-supported hybrid overdenture in an 8-year-old child with mandibular anodontia. An interdisciplinary approach to treatment planning was employed. Two implant fixtures were placed in the canine regions and ball attachments connected to provide support and retention for the prosthesis. There was only one implant-related complication during the first follow-up year. Close follow-up during the child's growing years is essential for the maintenance of the peri-implant tissues and to replace the prosthesis as mandibular growth occurs.

Essix appliances. Provisional anterior prosthesis for pre and post implant patients.

Missing anterior teeth are being replaced by implant-supported restorations quite frequently in modern dentistry. Providing the patient with a temporary prosthesis prior to or following implant fixture placement must satisfy established esthetic and functional criteria. When orthodontic treatment is included as part of the overall treatment effort, additional considerations include the retention and stabilization of newly established tooth positions. This article describes the fabrication, use and advantages of a provisional anterior prosthesis that replaces missing teeth prior to or following

Fabrication of orbital prosthesis by two different methods in patients with post-COVID-19 rhino-orbital maxillary mucormycosis: A case series.

Neoplasms, congenital disorders, fungal infections, and traumatic injuries are the predominant causes of orbital defects. Various retentive mechanisms such as application of adhesive, utilization of mechanical undercuts, and implant-supported attachments are generally used in the maxillofacial prosthesis. In the orbital region, the result of magnet-retained attachments is favorable compared with other mechanisms. Different advantages of the magnet-retained prosthesis are less manual dexterity needed during insertion or removal and better maintenance of hygiene. The skin-implant interface and t

Patient-matched osseointegrated prostheses for thumb amputees: a cadaver and feasibility study.

Thumb amputations affect 50% of hand functionality. Common solutions consist of microsurgical treatments or silicone vacuum prosthesis. Not all patients are eligible for microsurgical treatment and the use of vacuum prosthesis is often discouraged because of their instability. On the contrary, osseointegrated prosthesis provide stable retention and osseoperception. This cadaveric study evaluated the process of a patient-matched osseointegrated prosthesis for the treatment of thumb amputees. Computed tomography (CT) medical images reconstruction provided information on metacarpal stump, used as

Characteristics and outcome of 27 elbow periprosthetic joint infections: results from a 14-year cohort study of 358 elbow prostheses.

Elbow arthroplasty is increasingly performed in patients with rheumatic and post-traumatic arthritis. Data on elbow periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) are limited. We investigated the characteristics and outcome of elbow PJI in a 14-year cohort of total elbow arthroplasties in a single centre. Elbow prosthesis, which were implanted between 1994 and 2007 at Schulthess Clinic in Zurich, were retrospectively screened for infection. PJI was defined as periprosthetic purulence, the presence of sinus tract or microbial growth. A Kaplan-Meier survival method and Cox proportional hazard analysis wer

Innovative hybrid approach: digital and analog fabrication of orbital prosthesis for post-COVID-19 mucormycosis defects using photogrammetry technique.

In addition to anatomical loss, removal of the full or portion of the orbit results in a facial deformity and psychological distress for the patient. This article details a practical case of prosthetic rehabilitation using digital workflow for an orbital deformity caused by post-COVID-19 Mucor mycosis. The main goal of this case study was to create a maxillofacial orbital prosthesis that is well-retained, simple to use, and accurate in terms of appearance. The study addresses the problems involved in fabricating the orbital prosthesis, particularly the unique dimensions and form of the defect,

Attachment-retained gingival prosthesis for implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis in the maxilla: a clinical report.

The rehabilitation of edentulous maxillae is a complex procedure due to the involvement of esthetic and functional requirements. A trial maxillary denture can be used to identify the need for adequate upper lip support when replacing removable complete dentures by implant-fixed dental prostheses. This clinical report describes the outcome of the rehabilitation of an edentulous atrophic maxilla with unfavorable maxillomandibular relationship and deficient upper lip support. A trial denture was fabricated and used to diagnose the need for a prosthesis capable of restoring the upper lip support.

Upper eyelid retraction in long-standing anophthalmic sockets.

Marked retraction of the upper eyelid is a rare but distressing complication of the anophthalmic socket. It usually occurs in long-term prosthesis wearers who have undergone enucleation in childhood or 20 to 30 years previously. Contributing factors include a large prosthesis, infrequent removal of the prosthesis, and lid closure difficulties. Clinically, the upper eyelid may be severely retracted, producing a wide-eyed stare as well as problems with comfort and prosthesis retention. The upper fornix may be foreshortened or of adequate depth but misdirected posteriorly. The postulated mechanis…

Facial defects restored with extraoral implant-supported prostheses.

A facial defect results in cosmetic, functional, and psychologic problems and acts as a difficult and challenging procedure for the maxillofacial surgeon and the prosthodontist. Retention of a facial prosthesis is an important key in the patient's satisfaction and acceptance. The introduction of extraoral implant applications have been accepted as an advanced retention method. The purpose of this article is to report the results from our clinical experience with patients wearing facial prostheses anchored to extraoral ITI implants (Straumann, AG, Basel, Switzerland).

Retention of telescopic versus LOCATOR attachments and marginal bone loss surrounding implant-retained maxillary overdentures: A 2-year randomized clinical trial.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: A maxillary implant-retained overdenture (Max IOD) represents a controversial prosthesis. Biomechanically, the prosthesis induces strain on the implants, associated with complications from maintenance difficulties to implant loss. Whether the choice of attachment system affects retention of the prosthesis and marginal bone loss (MBL) around the implants remains unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical trial was to assess the amount of retention and MBL provided by 2 attachment types: telescopic (TA) and LOCATOR (LA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty participants (24 wo

Rehabilitation of Unilateral Congenital Microtia by Implant-retained Prosthesis.

Microtia is a major congenital anomaly of the external ear. It includes a spectrum of deformities from a grossly normal but small ear to the absence of the entire external ear. These deformities account for three in every 10,000 births, with bilaterally missing ears seen in fewer than 10% of all cases. Extraoral implant-retained ear prosthesis has been proven to be a predictable treatment option for rehabilitation of such congenital anomalies. This paper aims to present principles of maxillofacial implants, review of literature, advantages, disadvantages, and considerations in treatment planni
