Neuroexistential psychotherapy: bridging the gap.

As science continues to advance, many psychotherapeutic approaches have updated their theories and practices accordingly. However, existentialism has remained ambivalent to these developments, leading it to appear less effective, rigorous, or valid, despite ample evidence to the contrary. The purpose of this article is twofold. First, it is an invitation for natural-scientifically trained psychologists and psychotherapists to recognize the substantive benefits of grounding their thinking and practice in human-scientific philosophical reflection. Second, to encourage existentially oriented psyc

Supervision in Transference-Focused Psychotherapy.

Transference-focused psychotherapy is a modified psychoanalytic psychotherapy for patients with borderline personality disorder as well as patients with impaired personality functioning. Supervision of candidates and psychotherapists is regarded as mandatory and employs video recording of all sessions. The supervisor's task is to be aware of the patient's external reality as well as of the treatment frame. Only after the setting is protected in this way, the treatment process is focused with an emphasis on the therapeutic relationship (transference) in the here-and-now. The parallel process (r…

[Chronic pollakiuria: cystectomy or psychotherapy].

BACKGROUND: Persistent unexplained urological complaints and diseases are a common problem in clinical practice. Psychological components can play an important role in urological complaints. Neglect of these facts can lead to an insufficient or incorrect treatment. Therefore, apart from the specific medical diagnostics, a complete examination of mental and psychological functions before an invasive intervention is also required. PSYCHOSOMATICS IN UROLOGY: Illustrated by the case of a young woman with a request for a cystectomy while suffering from a chronic pollakiuria, this paper explains th

Interpersonal psychotherapy for eating disorders.

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a leading evidence-based treatment for those eating disorders in which binge eating is a feature. This article begins with a consideration of the rationale for using IPT to treat patients with eating disorders. This is followed by a review of the evidence supporting its use and a brief description of treatment including an illustrative clinical case vignette. The article closes with a discussion of possible future directions for research on IPT for eating disorders.

[Group interpersonal psychotherapy: a review].

Interpersonal Psychotherapy was conceived as a psychotherapeutic approach to treating Depression, but has since now been broadly used to treat many other disorders. It has also recently been adapted to delivery in the group setting, with both advantages and disadvantages as other group psychotherapies. This adaptation, first used by Wilfley and colleagues, maintained the main features of IPT, i.e. the central role of the interpersonal focus and identification of one (or two) out of four problem interpersonal areas (Grief; Role Transition; Role Disputes; Interpersonal Deficits). It also kept th…

Psychotherapy and mental health teams.

Mental health teams in different configurations and settings are under increasing pressure to offer formal psychotherapies as well as psychologically informed management to large numbers of 'difficult' patients with severe and complex presentations. This pressure has arisen variously from consumers, governmental agencies and commissioning bodies. Although these teams are an important resource, they receive limited training, supervision or support in models of psychotherapy, especially those incorporating a relational dimension and offering a coherent 'common language'. This commonly results in…

[Psychotherapy of posttraumatic stress disorders].

Since the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was introduced in DSM-III in 1980, a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches have been developed to address the specific problems and needs of traumatized patients. Successful treatment of PTSD requires a well thought-out therapeutic attitude. The therapist must find a well-balanced position between over-identification and turning away out of helplessness. A sensation-seeking attitude should be avoided as should the danger of vicarious traumatisation. In many instances, PTSD can not be treated sufficiently by psychotherapy alone: a co…

Psychotherapy for histrionic personality disorder.

The author uses a configurational analysis method for case formulation and to establish links between individualized formulation and treatment techniques. A prototype of formulation for the histrionic personality disorder is presented, using theories for formulation about states of mind, defensive control processes, and person schemas. A phase-oriented prototype of a treatment plan is linked to these levels of formulation. The result can provide a guideline for clinicians and a teaching document for trainees.

Psychotherapy for intractable inflammatory dermatoses.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with inflammatory dermatoses respond to conventional treatment. Recalcitrance may indicate underlying emotional factors after infection, contact allergy, and noncompliance have been ruled out. Psychiatric treatment has been reported to be effective. OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to determine whether insight-oriented psychotherapy, by effecting last change, would provide long-term cutaneous and psychiatric improvement. METHODS: On the basis of emotional distress attributed to a recalcitrant inflammatory dermatosis, four patients were referred for psychiatric evaluation.…

[Psychotherapy procedures in chronic pain].

Psychotherapeutic possibilities of treating chronic pain are employed in two different ways: Firstly in the form of psychotherapy in patients whose strategies for coping with pain and/or pain genesis can be described in terms of psychopathological categories; secondly in the form of pain-coping training, which is generally indicated in the presence of chronic pain, in particular that which is traditionally termed organic. With respect to their effectiveness in achieving, in the first place, mood change, and in the assessment of symptoms, the individual procedures have been well tested. The que…

Behavioral psychotherapy for anxiety disorders.

Behavioral psychotherapy is probably the treatment of choice for most phobic and obsessive-compulsive disorders and plays a lesser role in the management of panic disorder without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. This article discusses treatment goals and strategies for each disorder.

[Ambulatory psychotherapy of sex offenses].

We present the theoretical basis and results of a comprehensive research project concerning the psychotherapeutic treatment of sexual offenders in an ambulant setting. The therapeutic sample (n = 86) consists of patients with the following symptoms: exhibitionism, child molestation and sexual aggressive acts towards women. Data concerning the sexual deviant symptomatology, the general and sexual socialization and the actual psycho-social situation are demonstrated. The sexually deviant symptoms is considered in regard to basic personality deficits and general life-coping strategies of the pati

Behavioural psychotherapy of uncommon referrals.

In a behavioural clinic, over a period of nine years, trainee nurse-therapists treated 65 unusual referrals (8 per cent) out of a total of 800 patients. The remainder had phobic, obsessive-compulsive, sexual and social disorders, which responded encouragingly to behavioural treatment. Of the unusual referrals, useful results were obtained by behavioural treatment for stuttering, hairpulling, tics, and writer's cramp; bulimia is worth further study. Unresponsive conditions included compulsive gambling and obesity.

[Experiences with ambulatory group psychotherapy].

It has been reported about the results of ambulatory psychotherapy in groups. We believed that the process in a group will be stimulated specifically by different concepts and kinds of intervention. Thus, the behaviour of the therapeut seems to be very important. Special attention is also paid to the preparation of the patients within a complex therapy programme. In this way it is possible, also to improve ambulatory ability and indication of dynamie psychotherapy in a group.

Does psychotherapy benefit neurotic patients.

Smith, Glass, and Miller examined the benefits of psychotherapy in 475 controlled studies. Their data were reexamined, and only studies of patients coded as having neuroses, true phobias, and emotional-somatic complaints and who had sought treatment were included in the present analysis. The results of 81 controlled trials were integrated statistically using the metaanalytic technique. The findings provide further evidence on the efficacy of psychotherapy. The condition of the typical patient after treatment was better than that of 77% of untreated controls measured at the same time. The rate …

Dependence and psychotherapy--developmental considerations.

This article illustrates how the assessment of the level and degree of dependency in psychotherapy can be used as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool. Dependency varies with the stage of psychosexual development, with the degree and state of illness, and with the stage of treatment. Appropriate monitoring of this factor promotes optimal growth potential in the patient.
