Treatment Modalities of Pediculosis Capitis: A Narrative Review.

The review has been done to find out the best-suited treatment modality for pediculosis capitis. Pediatric patients frequently experience pediculosis capitis, a head louse infestation brought on by the Pediculus humanus var. capitis. The primary sign of head lice infestation is a scratchy scalp, and the presence of living nits confirms this diagnosis. When a doctor diagnoses pediculosis as a primary bacterial infection, a bacterial impetignization and secondary infection, and cervical and occipital lymphadenopathy might make the clinical diagnosis more difficult. A proper therapy of pediculosi

Increasing pesticide-resistant ectoparasitic infections may increase pesticide poisoning risks in children.

Head louse and scabies mite infestations are common among pre-school and school-age children, and topical pesticides are frequently prescribed to treat such conditions. Ectoparasite resistance to the safest and most commonly prescribed pyrethrin/pyrethroid pesticides for ectoparasitic infections has, however, been increasing since the 1980s. The increasing resistance of these arthropods to the safest pesticides may lead to greater use of more toxic, alternative pesticides to control infestations and to prevent institutional outbreaks. MEDLINE and Cochrane searches, 1966-2008, were conducted to

Infestation of research zebra finch colony with 2 novel mite species.

A zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) housed in a neuroscience laboratory was observed to have numerous feather mites. Subsequently, similar mites were found on other birds in the animal facility and research space. The most abundant mite was a novel, undescribed species in the genus Neocheyletiella. Whereas known Neocheyletiella mites have previously been characterized as skin parasites of various birds worldwide, the species on the zebra finches is unique because it lives and builds nests in the feathers. Infrequent specimens of a 'true' feather mite, a new species of Megninialges, were presen

[The control of storage mites in the mycological laboratory].

Mycological cultures in the laboratory are threatened by storage mites who feed on fungi and cause contamination by transferring bacteria and fungi from culture to culture. To eliminate mites from fungal cultures without damage to the fungi themselves several chemical and physical procedures were tested. The following substances were added to Sabouraud glucose (2%) agar at concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0%: gamma benzene hexachloride (lindane), N-ethyl-o-crotonyltoluide, pyrethrins, dieldrin N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide, benzyl benzoate, and--as popular household remedies--Eau de Cologne, neutral soap…

[Chrysanthemum allergy. Pt. II: Experimental studies on the causative agents].

Experimental studies on allergic contact dermatitis due to Chrysanthemum indicum 1. (Chrysanthemum x-morifolium) (chrysanthemum of the florists) have indicated the following results: 1. In 5 patients with allergic contact dermatitis from chrysanthemum oil of turpentine and its sensitizing compounds gave no patch test responses. No relationship between contact allergy due to chrysanthemus and to turpentine oil could be determined. 2. The pyrethrins, constituents with insecticidal activity, derived from certain Chrysanthemum species and often suspected as the causative agents, play no role in ch…

Synthesis and insecticidal activity of new pyrethroids.

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroids are among the most potent pesticides known, with great potential for structural variation with retention or enhancement of potency. The simple methyl ester is easier to prepare (at least one step shorter) than the more complex pyrethroids modified on the alcohol moiety. The objective was to synthesise methyl esters of pyrethroid acids containing an aromatic ring on the acid moiety and evaluate their biological activity against Ascia monuste orseis Latr., Tuta absoluta Meyrick, Periplaneta americana (L.), Musca domestica L. and Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.). RESULTS: The

Toxicity of newly synthesized pyrethroids against the yellow fever mosquito larvae, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Synthesis of p-substituted benzyl esters of (+/-) cis 2,2-dimethyl-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)cyclopropane-carboxylic acid has been reported. (+/-) cis Dichlorovinyl acid esters of p-substituted phenols acquired insecticidal activity after introduction of methylene group. The insecticidal activity shown against mosquito larvae A. aegypti by compounds having electron withdrawing groups such as -NO2, -CN was substantially higher than that of the compounds having electron-donating groups such as -CH3, -OCH3.

Transformation of synthetic pyrethroid insecticides by a thermophilic Bacillus sp.

Employing a mineral salts medium containing Tween 80 as the primary carbon source, a strain of Bacillus stearothermophilus was isolated which was able to hydrolyse selected second and third-generation pyrethroids to non-insecticidal products. Of a range of pyrethroid insecticides the trans-isomer of permethrin was the most readily transformed by this microbial isolate, whilst flumethrin was the least. 3-Phenoxybenzoic acid and the respective halovinyl or haloacid moieties were detected as the major hydrolytic products of the pyrethroids. It is believed that 3-phenoxybenzoic acid was formed fro

Chronic sequelae and irreversible injuries following acute pyrethroid intoxication.

For patients the author has observed, the majority of complaints following an acute pyrethroid intoxication disappeared after the end of exposure. Residuals frequently observed after more than 2 years were: (1) cerebro-organic disorders (reduced intellectual performance with 20-30% reduction of endurance during mental work, personality disorder), visual disturbances, dysacousia, tinnitus; (2) sensomotor-polyneuropathy most frequently in the lower legs; (3) vegetative nervous disorders (paroxysmal tachycardia, pollakisuria, increased heat-sensitivity, orthostatic hypotonia and reduced exercise

Acute contact toxicity of insecticides for the chemical control of the invasive yellow-legged hornet Vespa velutina nigrithorax (Hymenoptera: Vespidae).

The yellow-legged hornet, Vespa velutina subs. nigrithorax Buysson, 1905, originally from Southeast Asia, has become an invasive species in … of four commercially available formulations containing acetamiprid, cypermethrin, a mix of natural pyrethrins, and Spinosad as active ingredients. These tests were performed in laboratory conditions, offering novel data for the chemical control of this invasive species. Our results suggest acetamiprid and spinosad as promising candidates for the yellow-legg …

Stereoselective metabolic disruption of cypermethrin by remolding gut homeostasis in rat.

Cypermethrin (CYP), a prototypical synthetic pyrethroid, reportedly causes metabolic disruption, while its stereoselective impact remains elusive. This study initially revealed that only α-CYP caused significant weight loss at 8.5 mg/(kg•day) in rats. All three CYP isomers caused the accumulation of hepatic glycogen, and hyperlipemia phenotype as the increment of total triglyceride. Rats treated with α-CYP had markedly high blood glucose levels and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index. The systematic inflammation of θ-CYP group rats was evidenced by high lipopolysaccharide-

The locus of inhibition of NADH oxidation by benzothiadiazoles in beef heart submitochondrial particles.

6-Chloro-1,2,3-benzothiadiazole (6-Cl-BTD) is an effective inhibitor of NADH oxidase (site I) but not of succinate oxidase in beef heart submitochondrial particles. For NADH oxidase activity maximal inhibition (80-85%) was achieved at 0.75mM 6-Cl-BTD. A similar level of inhibition was also observed (half maximal inhibitory concentration 0.5mM) towards NADH-duroquinone reductase; NADH-juglone reductase was slightly inhibited (23%) at 0.5mM 6-Cl-BTD while NADH-ferricyanide reductase was unaffected. The data suggest that 6-Cl-BTD interacts with an electron transport site on the oxygen side of NAD

Recognition and management of acute pesticide poisoning.

Most poisonings from pesticides do not have a specific antidote, making decontamination the most important intervention. For maximal benefit … xcessive use or use on large areas of nonintact skin. Non-dipyridyl herbicides, biocides (including pyrethrins, pyrethroids, and Bacillus thuringiensis) rarely produce anything other than mild skin, eye, and/or gastrointestinal irritation on topical exposure or ingestion.
