Thyroidectomy is a common procedural skill in the armamentarium of an otolaryngologist but has its own set of complications. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To report the long-term results after definitive radiotherapy (RT) for pyriform sinus squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

A branchial remnant originating in the pyriform sinus causes a recurrent fistula or abscess in the neck. In spite of excision, recurrence may result from inadequate removal of the fistula tract. Mutation of the p53 protein may be the commonest genetic event in the development of malignant neoplasms in humans. We analyzed the immunohistological expression of p53 in tissue sections from 51 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus who were treated with surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. Overexpression of p53 was found in 37 (72.5%) tumors. No correlation was found between p53 overexpression and clinical and histopathological parameters. Recurrence and overall survival did not differ between p53-positive and p53-negative cases.

Acute suppurative thyroiditis is very rare and often related to congenital abnormalities of the branchial pouches or immunodeficiency. A patient who developed syncope due to carotid sinus syndrome is described. The patient was suffering from carcinoma of the pyriform fossa for the past one year and received radiotherapy in the region of the neck for the same.
