PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The non-specific presentation of acute Q fever makes it difficult to diagnose in children, but untreated Q fever can result in chronic infections that have severe complications.
RECENT FINDINGS: Pediatric Q fever cases continue to be infrequently reported in the literature, and primarily document cases of persistent infections with Coxiella burnetii. Standardized treatment protocols for chronic Q fever in children still do not exist. Doxycycline and hydroxychloroquine are the treatment combination most utilized by healthcare providers to treat Q fever endocarditis or osteom…

Q fever is a disease found in both humans and animals, caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. The epidemiology of Q fever is that of the animal reservoirs of the infection including both direct and indirect contact and use of a variety of products from such animals as cattle, sheep, and goats. Pneumonia is the major manifestation of Q fever in some countries. It is mild to moderate in severity, and mortality is unusual. It can occur as sporadic or outbreak cases.

Clinical manifestations of Q fever infection are fever, productive cough, decrease in exercise tolerance and chills. Cardiovascular involvement is well recognized and usually presents as endocarditis and infection of an aneurysm or vascular graft. Myocarditis has only rarely been described as a manifestation of acute Q fever infection. In this report we desc…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this era of emerging infectious diseases and bioterrorism it is important to be up to date with the diagnosis and management of Q fever pneumonia.
RECENT FINDINGS: A considerable amount of new information has emerged regarding the pathogenesis of Coxiella burnetii infection. The complete genome of this microorganism has now been sequenced and there are several unique features. The spectrum of manifestations of infection due to C. burnetii continues to expand. Some of the more recently described findings are acalculous cholecystitis, rhabdomyolysis, long-term persistence …

Q fever is a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii--an obligate, gram negative, intracellular bacteria. The term Q (Query) was first used because at the time the disease was named its etiology was unknown. Q fever is divided into acute and chronic infections characterized by different evolution, serological profiles and treatment. Pericarditis, as a manifestation of Q fever is rare and difficult to diagnose. This is due to the following: firstly, the clinical presentation of acute Q fever is pleomorphic, nonspecific and self limited, and secondly, the diagnosis relies on the physician's…

Q fever is a widespread disease caused by the rickettsia Coxiella burnetii, an obligate intracellular bacteria which man usually acquires through the inhalation of infected dust from subclinically infected animals. Q fever may be acute or chronic. The chronic form mostly presents as endocarditis, which is difficult to diagnose and may ultimately be fatal. Immunocompromised conditions and underlying heart disease are the most important risk factors to consider in cases of Q fever endocarditis. The ultimate diagnosis is based on specific diagnostic tests which include serology, demonstration of …
