Low-Processed Extracts from Peppermint Leaves (Mentha × piperita L.) as a Source of Polyphenols and Essential Oils: Evaluation of Green Solvents and Valorization of Post-Extraction Plant Material.

This study examines a low-processed, food-grade extraction concept for peppermint leaves (Mentha × piperita L.) using solvents consistent with the principles of green chemistry and an infusion-like protocol. Primary extraction (2-30 min; 50-100 °C) was carried out using water, plasma-treated nanowater, a glycerol-water mixture (65%), an ethanol-water mixture (50%; at room temperature and at 50 °C), and rapeseed oil. To evaluate the potential use of biomass within a circular economy model, the residue remaining after the first extraction was subjected to secondary extraction under identical tim…

New green extraction approach for the isolation of Phytosterols from canola oil deodorizer distillate.

Canola oil deodorizer distillate (CODD) is a low value by-product from canola oil, rich in bioactives. We explored the extraction of phytosterols from hot-pressed and cold-pressed CODD. Operational parameters were optimized for a hot saponification procedure and utilizing fractional precipitation. A feed-to-solvent ratio of 1:10 (w/v) was optimal, and saponification was performed at 80 °C for 1 h. Preferential solubility of phytosterols in ethanol allowed effective elimination of impurities, especially hydrocarbons while a washing procedure eliminated terpenes. Phytosterols yield were 8.7 ± 0.

Erucic acid, a nutritional PPARδ-ligand may influence Huntington's disease pathogenesis.

Increasing recent evidence suggests a key role of oligodendroglial injury and demyelination in the pathophysiology of Huntington's Disease (HD) and the transcription factor PPARδ is critical for oligodendroglial regeneration and myelination. PPARδ directly involves in the pathogenesis of HD and treatment with a brain-permeable PPARδ-agonist (KD3010) alleviates its severity in mice. Erucic acid (EA) is also a PPARδ-ligand ω9 fatty acid which is highly consumed in Asian countries through ingesting cruciferous vegetables such as rapeseed (Brassica napus) and indian mustard (Brassica juncea). Beyond Autoxidation and Lipoxygenases: Fatty Acid Oxidation Products in Plant Oils.

For decades, research on oxidation of linoleic acid (LA, C18:2 n6) and α-linolenic acid (ALA, C18:3 n3) in plant oils has focused on autoxidatively formed and lipoxygenase-derived 9-hydro(pero)xy- and 13-hydro(pero)xy-LA and -ALA. Here, using a non-targeted approach, we show that other hydroxy fatty acids are more abundant in plant oils. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses unveiled highly abundant peaks in flaxseed and rapeseed oils. Using authentic reference standards, seven of the peaks were identified as 9-, 10-, 12-, 13-, and 15-HODE as…

Development of nucleic acid isolation by non-silica-based nanoparticles and real-time PCR kit for edible vegetable oil traceability.

For efficient extraction of amplifiable DNA from edible vegetable oils, we developed a novel DNA extraction approach based on the non-silica-based dipolar nanocomposites. The nanoparticle comprises a hydrophilic polymethyl methacrylate core with abundant capillaries, hydrophilic vesicles decorated with molecules having DNA affinity and a coating hydrophobic polystyrene layer. The nanoparticles are soluble in oil, adsorb the DNA from the aqueous phase and gave a high DNA recovery ratio. All DNA extracts from fully refined vegetable oil soybean, peanut, rapeseed, and cottonseed oils, including t

Strong mutagenic effects of diesel engine emissions using vegetable oil as fuel.

Diesel engine emissions (DEE) are classified as probably carcinogenic to humans. In recent years every effort was made to reduce DEE and their content of carcinogenic and mutagenic polycyclic aromatic compounds. Since 1995 we observed an appreciable reduction of mutagenicity of DEE driven by reformulated or newly designed fuels in several studies. Recently, the use of rapeseed oil as fuel for diesel engines is rapidly growing among German transportation businesses and agriculture due to economic reasons. We compared the mutagenic effects of DEE from two different batches of rapeseed oil (RSO) …

Total Mercury and Methylmercury in Lake Water of Canada's Oil Sands Region.

Increased delivery of mercury to ecosystems is a common consequence of industrialization, including in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) of Canada. Atmospheric mercury deposition has been studied previously in the AOSR; however, less is known about the impact of regional industry on toxic methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in lake ecosystems. We measured total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations for five years from 50 lakes throughout the AOSR. Mean lake water concentrations of THg (0.4-5.3 ng L-1) and MeHg (0.01-0.34 ng L-1) were similar to those of other boreal lakes and <5% of all sa

Enhanced α-ketoglutaric acid production and recovery in Yarrowia lipolytica yeast by effective pH controlling.

The replacement of chemical synthesis by environmentally friendly energy-efficient technologies for production of valuable metabolites is a principal strategy of developing biotechnological industry all over the world. In the present study, we develop a method for α-ketoglutaric acid (KGA) production from rapeseed oil with the use of Yarrowia lipolytica yeast. Sixty strains of Y. lipolytica yeasts were tested for their ability to produce KGA, and the strain Y. lipolytica 212 (Y. lipolytica VKM Y-2412) was selected as a promising KGA producer. Using a three-stage pH controlling, in which pH was…

Cooking Oil-Derived Aldehydes: Overlooked Components of the Western Diet with the Potential to Disrupt Fetal Brain Development.

Dietitians routinely recommend refined high polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) content culinary oils such as soybean, corn, canola, rapeseed and sunflower oils to pregnant women. Unfortunately, these PUFAs readily undergo peroxidation (especially at high frying or cooking temperatures), generating toxic lipid oxidation products, including reactive aldehydes and oxidized lipid mediators with established biological activities that may negatively impact fetal brain development. This hypothesis-driven perspective paper proposes a conceptual framework linking the maternal consumption of oils contami

Salt stress responses of Brassica napus roots and functional characterization of BnSAUR12 in salt tolerance.

Salt stress severely limits crop productivity by affecting plant growth and development. Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) shows considerable adaptability to saline environments; however, the molecular basis of root responses to salt stress remains largely unclear. In this study, we investigated the physiological, hormonal, and transcriptional responses of rapeseed roots under salt stress. Salt treatment altered root system architecture by inhibiting hypocotyl elongation and lateral root development while promoting primary root elongation. Targeted hormone metabolomic analysis revealed extensive ch

Integrated Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Analysis Reveals Molecular Responses Associated with Foliar Selenium Treatment Under Cold Stress in Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) Seedlings.

Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is an important oil crop, but seedling growth is often restricted by low temperatures in late autumn and winter. Selenium (Se) may modulate plant stress responses, but its dose-dependent effects and associated molecular responses in rapeseed under cold stress remain unclear. Seedlings were exposed to 4 °C for 3 d and received foliar applications of 10, 20, or 40 mg L-1 Na2SeO3. Based on physiological responses, the 20 mg L-1 treatment was selected for integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses alongside the normal-temperature control and the cold-stress gro
