Relationship between ocular wavefront aberrations and refractive error in Chinese school children.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between ocular wavefront aberrations and refractive error in children's eyes remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to re-examine this relationship in Chinese school children under natural distance accommodation. METHODS: Ocular wavefront aberrations were measured in 86 Chinese children with spherical equivalent refraction (SER) between +0.5 D and -6.0 D and astigmatism less than -1.00 D. Wavefront aberrations were calculated using an objective method based on the Hartmann-Shack principle. Refractive error was obtained using a phoropter after cyclople

Pharmacological therapies for cataract and refractive errors: landscaping niches of ocular drug patenting.

We have used a focused and comprehensive ophthalmology patent database to characterize the international patenting landscape dedicated to the pharmacological treatment of cataract, corneal opacities and dystrophies, and complicated refractive errors. A total of 201 disclosures related to cataract or corneal clouding (published between 1982 and 2011), and 99 documents (published between 1991 and 2011) related to refractive or geometry errors were identified. Current applications for the treatment or prevention of primary cataract have ceased to address diabetic cataract specifically through the

Refractive state, ocular anatomy, and accommodative range of the sea otter (Enhydra lutris).

Sea otters are carnivorous, amphibious mammals that are active both above and under water. Accordingly, it might be expected that their eyes are adapted for both aerial and aqueous vision. We examined the anatomy and physiological optics of the sea otter eye with a view towards describing and explaining its amphibious visual characteristics. We employed photokeratoscopy to measure the refractive power of the sea otter cornea, which we found to be 59 D. Using video dynamic photorefraction, we found that sea otters can focus targets clearly both in air and water, relying on accommodation to comp

Impact of Preoperative Ocular Hypotony on Refractive Predictability After Phacovitrectomy for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment.

Background/Objectives: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is a vision-threatening condition often treated with combined cataract surgery and vitrectomy, but accurate postoperative refractive prediction may be difficult when ocular anatomy is altered by preoperative hypotony. This retrospective comparative study evaluated the effect of preoperative ocular hypotony on refractive predictability and visual outcomes after combined phacovitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Materials and Methods: Electronic medical records from Nagasaki University Hospital from 2010 to 2022 were reviewed.
