Self-reported vaccine hesitancy and refusal among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental delays: a cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: Due to the spread of misinformation that some vaccines cause autism spectrum disorder (ASD), many parents report changes in their vaccination behavior following a diagnosis of ASD, putting their children at increased risk for preventable diseases. Our study aimed to determine the rate of vaccination-related concerns and refusal behaviors in parents of children with ASD and non-autistic developmental delays (non-ASD-DD) and to examine factors potentially associated with vaccine hesitancy and refusal. In our study, a questionnaire was distributed to all parents of children diagnosed

Methodological issues in the recruitment of primary care patients with depression.

OBJECTIVE: To compare two strategies of patient recruitment, waiting room (WR) screening and screening after physician referral (PR), for participation in a treatment-outcome study of minor depression and dysthymia in primary care. The influence of demographic factors on patients' refusal to participate in WR screening was also examined. METHOD: Of a convenience sample of 3,344 first stage patients, a total of 609 patients were evaluated in a semi-structured manner using a two-stage screening procedure from the mood module of the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD). RESULT…

"It was tidak cocok (incompatible)": Incompatibility, Decoloniality, and Vaccine Hesitancy in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

In 2018, vaccine hesitancy marked the nationwide measles-rubella vaccination campaign in the Indonesian province of Aceh. The hesitancy, which was supported by the provincial government, stemmed from concerns over porcine contamination in the vaccine product. "Tidak cocok" (incompatible) became a pervasive statement used to rationalize the refusal to participate in the vaccination program, permeated personal narratives, public responses to a vaccine allergy case, and an official meeting to determine the vaccination campaign's future. In this article, I theorize incompatibility as a lexical ite…

Associations of solution building and resilience with school refusal behavior among elementary school students.

This study examined the effects of solution building and resilience on school refusal behavior. The participants were 587 elementary school students (280 boys, 306 girls, and one student who did not report gender) who completed a self-report questionnaire. The results showed that resilience skills had a direct negative effect on the intensity of school refusal behavior among boys and an indirect negative effect mediated by solution building. However, among girls, resilience skills did not directly affect the intensity of school refusal behavior, but had a negative indirect effect through solut

Study refusal and exclusion from a randomized treatment study of generalized social phobia.

We examine treatment exclusion and refusal rates as well as reasons for non-participation in a sub-sample of phone interviews conducted to determine eligibility for a randomized study of treatments for generalized social phobia (GSP). This study compared group comprehensive cognitive behavioral therapy (CCBT) to fluoxetine (FLU), placebo (PLA), or their combination. Results suggest that the major exclusion for the study was due to comorbid depression, followed by having a different diagnosis as primary. Patient refusal to enter the study was also common, with the most frequently reported reaso

Altruism, Scepticism, and collective decision-making in foreign-born U.S. residents in a tuberculosis vaccine trial.

BACKGROUND: The current vaccine against tuberculosis, BCG, is effective when given in most TB-endemic countries at birth but has diminished efficacy against pulmonary TB after 15-20 years. As a result, new booster vaccines for adolescents and adults are being developed to realize the World Health Organization target of global elimination of TB by 2035. Multiple TB candidates thus are in active clinical development. METHODS: One of these, DAR-901, is advancing in human clinical trials. These clinical trials are conducted in BCG immunized adults with and without HIV infection in order to assess

A single growth hormone determination 30 minutes after the administration of the GHRH plus GHRP-6 test is sufficient for the diagnosis of somatotrope dysfunction in patients who have suffered traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Latinos are disproportionately affected by diabetes and people with diabetes experience frequent hospital admissions and readmissions. Care transition interventions can help reduce rates of readmission; however, there are many barriers to recruiting Latinos for participation in intervention research. Exploring reasons for study refusal furthers understanding of low research participation rates to help researchers address barriers. DESIGN: This study presents a cross-sectional, descriptive analysis of reasons for study refusal and attrition drawing from data collected as part of a r

Potential acceptance of HPV vaccination at ages 9-10 in the United States among parents of HPV vaccine-naïve children.

This study explored attitudes/perceptions among parents who have not yet agreed to HPV vaccination for their 11-12-y-old children. US parents/guardians were recruited from a consumer panel for this online, cross-sectional survey. Parents (≥18 y) were eligible if their oldest child was 11-12, participated in their child's vaccine decisions/visit, had not decided on, or would refuse the HPV vaccine, and understood English. Parents were excluded if their child had medical conditions affecting eligibility for HPV vaccination or if they declined to provide consent. Sampling quotas were used for par

The effects of knowledge, attitudes, and significant others on decisions to enroll in a clinical trial on osteoporosis: implications for recruitment of older African-American women.

This preliminary study explored the roles of knowledge, attitudes, and significant others on decisions of older African-American women to enroll in a clinical trial involving estrogen and osteoporosis. Sixteen older African-American women (average age 75 years) participated in three focus groups. Twelve of the women had enrolled in the clinical trial and four, although eligible, refused to enroll. Discussions revealed that knowledge of osteoporosis and estrogen and expectations of personal rewards and group benefits from medical research appear to differentiate the women who participated in th

Evaluation of a brief school-based e-cigarette prevention program for elementary school students.

OBJECTIVES: E-cigarette use remains high among children and adolescents. School-based programs that address reasons for use, provide education on risks, and improve refusal skills are important in preventing e-cigarette use. However, we lack evidence-based e-cigarette prevention programs for elementary school students. This program evaluation assesses changes in learning outcomes, refusal skills, coping skills, social self-efficacy, and intentions to use e-cigarettes following implementation of a school-based e-cigarette prevention curriculum. METHODS: Participants in this pre-post evaluation

Individual, household and community factors associated with HIV test refusal in rural Malawi.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate individual, household and community factors associated with HIV test refusal in a counselling and testing programme offered at population level in rural Malawi. METHODS: HIV counselling and testing was offered to individuals aged 18-59 at their homes. Individual variables were collected by interviews and physical examinations. Household variables were determined as part of a previous census. Multivariate models allowing for household and community clustering were used to assess associations between HIV test refusal and explanatory variables. RESULTS: Of 2303 eligibl

Heroin refusal self-efficacy and preference for medication-assisted treatment after inpatient detoxification.

OBJECTIVE: An individual's self-efficacy to refuse using heroin in high-risk situations is believed to minimize the likelihood for relapse. However, among individuals completing inpatient heroin detoxification, perceived refusal self-efficacy may also reduce one's perceived need for medication-assisted treatment (MAT), an effective and recommended treatment for opioid use disorder. In the current study, we examined the relationship between heroin refusal self-efficacy and preference for MAT following inpatient detoxification. METHOD: Participants (N=397) were interviewed at the start of brief
