Exosomes - Spectacular role in reproduction.

Exosomes are nano-sized structures that are found in semen, epididymal -fluid, endometrium, as well as in follicular fluid. They are responsible for transporting bioactive cargo- proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Exosomes have been proven to influence processes in both female and male reproductive systems, including gametogenesis, acrosomal reaction, sperm capacitation, and embryo implantation in the endometrium. Exosomes are made of the same particles as the cells they come from and are secreted by normal and pathological cells. Therefore, exosomes can reflect the physiological state of ce

Glucocorticoid therapy in assisted reproduction.

As glucocorticoids are well-known as important regulators of stress and the immune system, their function and clinical use have elicited substantial interest in the field of reproduction. In particular, the effect of glucocorticoid therapy on endometrial receptivity during assisted reproduction, including in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles, has led to a great deal of interest and controversy. However, previous studies have not been able to provide consistent and reliable evidence due to their small, non-controlled designs and use of different criteria. Considering the potential risk of exposu…

Antimicrobial Resistance in Equine Reproduction.

Bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics following low-level "background" exposure to antimicrobial agents as well as from exposure at therapeutic levels during treatment for bacterial infections. In this review, we look specifically at antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the equine reproductive tract and its possible origin, focusing particularly on antibiotics in semen extenders used in preparing semen doses for artificial insemination. Our review of the literature indicated that AMR in the equine uterus and vagina were reported worldwide in the last 20 years, in locations as diverse as Euro

[Children born after assisted reproduction].

This review summarises the knowledge of children born after in vitro fertilization (IVF). They have small increased risk of preterm birth, low birthweight and congenital malformations compared with naturally conceived children. High rates of multiples after IVF have been a major explanation, but with increasing use of frozen embryo transfer, single embryo transfer has facilitated a huge decline in rates of IVF multiples. Attention has been drawn to potential metabolic disturbances and cardiovascular disease in IVF offspring. However, IVF children do not seem to have an increased risk of mental

Zika virus and assisted reproduction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Due to the fact that the Zika virus can be sexually transmitted, there is a potential risk for disease transmission at several stages of assisted reproduction. Such a possibility poses a serious challenge to couples pursing fertility with reproductive technologies. Here, we discuss what is known regarding Zika virus infection with respect to sexual transmission and correlate this knowledge with recent recommendations in the realm of infertility treatment. RECENT FINDINGS: Zika virus can be transmitted from infected men and women through vaginal, oral or anal intercourse. Zi…

Unisexual reproduction reverses Muller's ratchet.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a pathogenic basidiomycetous fungus that engages in outcrossing, inbreeding, and selfing forms of unisexual reproduction as well as canonical sexual reproduction between opposite mating types. Long thought to be clonal, >99% of sampled environmental and clinical isolates of C. neoformans are MATα, limiting the frequency of opposite mating-type sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction allows eukaryotic organisms to exchange genetic information and shuffle their genomes to avoid the irreversible accumulation of deleterious changes that occur in asexual populations, kno…

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome and reproduction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the recent diagnostic criteria, clinical implications, and therapeutic protocols for antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS). RECENT FINDINGS: Much has been learned in the recent years concerning the diagnosis of and clinical implications associated with the APS. A number of studies demonstrate some pathophysiologic mechanisms that suggest the impact of antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs) on successful growth and development of the placenta, and ultimately the embryo. These findings are discussed in context with establishing the Bradford Hill criteria for causatio

Thyroid diseases and female reproduction.

Thyroid diseases are very common in women of reproductive age. The aim of this study was to review the current evidence on physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of women with thyroid disorders that are currently seeking fertility, undergoing assisted reproduction technologies (ART) or being pregnant. Normal thyroid function is essential for normal function of the gonadal axis, thus important in maintaining normal reproductive capacity. On the contrary, any type of thyroid dysfunction may reduce the likelihood of pregnancy; the latter can be restored to normal after appropriate …

Thyroid hormone receptors and reproduction.

Thyroid disorders have a great impact on fertility in both sexes. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism cause changes in sex hormone-binding gl … plex. Hyper- and hypothyroidism are the main thyroid diseases that have an adverse effect on female reproduction and cause menstrual disturbances--mainly hypomenorrhea and polymenorrhea in hyperthyroidism, and oligomenorrhea in hypothyroidism. In recent studies, it has become evident that it is not only changes in serum levels of SHBG and sex steroids that are …

Congenital uterine anomalies affecting reproduction.

The following review seeks to summarise the current data regarding reproductive outcomes associated with congenital uterine anomalies. Such malformations originate from adverse embryologic events ranging from agenesis to lateral and vertical fusion defects. Associated renal anomalies are common both for the symmetric and asymmetric malformations. While fertility is minimally impacted upon by müllerian anomalies in most cases, such malformations have historically been associated with poor obstetric outcomes such as recurrent miscarriage, second trimester loss, preterm delivery, malpresentation

[Antiphospholipid syndrome and human reproduction].

Recurrent pregnancy loss is secondary to multiple illnesses. An important cause sometimes undiagnosed is the antiphospholipid syndrome, an autoimmune disease with various clinical alterations (miscarriage, hypertensive disorders, preterm delivery, vascular thrombosis, intrauterine retard growth, death intrauterine, abruption placentae). There are major and minor clinical criteria and precise indications that guide the physician to its recognition. Antibodies related with the syndrome are anticardiolipin and lupic anticoagulant, but other phospholipids seems to be implicated on this pathology a

Assisted reproduction: the epigenetic perspective.

Developmental pathways in humans and other organisms are buffered against changes in genotype and environment. Therefore, it should not come as a surprise that most of the children conceived by assisted reproduction technology (ART) are healthy, although ART bypasses a lot of biological filters and subjects the gametes and the early embryo to environmental stress. If, however, the buffer breaks down, the development of certain tissues or organs may follow abnormal trajectories. We argue that both normal and abnormal development in children conceived by ART can be explained by epigenetic mechan…

Antisperm immunity in assisted reproduction.

Antisperm antibodies (ASA) can impair the fertilising capacity of human spermatozoa, acting negatively on sperm motility and cervical mucus penetration, and at the level of in vitro gamete interaction. Several methods attempt to improve the potentially deleterious effects of ASA-mediated infertility: by decreasing ASA production, by removing ASA already bound to sperm, artificial insemination (AIH) and fertilisation (IVF, ICSI). Only ICSI seems able to overcome the problem, with fertilisation and pregnancy rates of ASA-positive patients undergoing this technique in the same range as ASA-negati
