Nitrous oxide respiration in acidophilic methanotrophs.

Aerobic methanotrophic bacteria are considered strict aerobes but are often highly abundant in hypoxic and even anoxic environments. Despite possessing denitrification genes, it remains to be verified whether denitrification contributes to their growth. Here, we show that acidophilic methanotrophs can respire nitrous oxide (N2O) and grow anaerobically on diverse non-methane substrates, including methanol, C-C substrates, and hydrogen. We study two strains that possess N2O reductase genes: Methylocella tundrae T4 and Methylacidiphilum caldifontis IT6. We show that N2O respiration supports growt…

Astrocyte networks modulate respiration - sniffing glue.

The role of astrocytes in the modulation of breathing has emerged. Within the two major respiratory control centers, the inspiration generating preBötzinger Complex and the chemosensitive parafacial respiratory group/retrotrapezoid nucleus, rhythmically active astrocytes have been discovered. These are connected in glial subnetworks that intermingle with the neuronal network. Furthermore, astrocytes modify overall respiratory network behavior through gliotransmitter release, especially during hypoxic and hypercapnic stress. Here, we review some recent discoveries regarding astrocyte-neuronal i

Cheyne-Stokes respiration: friend or foe?

BACKGROUND: Orthopnoea and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea are common entities regularly confronting thoracic physicians, particularly those with an interest in sleep medicine or non-invasive ventilatory support. One major cause is heart failure (HF), usually associated with abnormal lung function tests, and either obstructive or central sleep apnoea with Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSA-CSR). Whereas obstructive apnoea is considered injurious to the cardiovascular system, the effects of CSA-CSR are less clear and may be a compensatory response to severe HF. AIM: To determine whether there are co…

[Cheyne-Stokes respiration and cardiovascular risk].

Due to its high prevalence in patients with heart failure and its negative predictive value concerning morbidity and mortality, Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) is a sleep disorders of major interest. CSR correlates with the degree of heart failure and is characterised by a typical crescendo/decrescendo breathing pattern combined with phases of central sleep apnoea, caused by pulmonary oedema and oscillation of ventilatory control. Thus, CSR is a marker of the severity of heart failure. Treatment of CSR first involves optimisation of heart failure therapy by cardiologists and then application o…

The nucleus retroambiguus control of respiration.

The role of the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) in the context of respiration control has been subject of debate for considerable time. To solve this problem, we chemically (using d, l-homocysteic acid) stimulated the NRA in unanesthetized precollicularly decerebrated cats and studied the respiratory effect via simultaneous measurement of tracheal pressure and electromyograms of diaphragm, internal intercostal (IIC), cricothyroid (CT), and external oblique abdominal (EO) muscles. NRA-stimulation 0-1 mm caudal to the obex resulted in recruitment of IIC muscle and reduction in respiratory frequency.…

Respiration by buried echidnas Tachyglossus aculeatus.

Short-beaked echidnas have an impressive ability to submerge completely into soil or sand and remain there, cryptic, for long periods. This poses questions about how they manage their respiration, cut off from a free flow of gases. We measured the gradient in oxygen partial pressure (PO2) away from the snouts of buried echidnas and oxygen consumption (VO2) in five individuals under similar conditions, in two substrates with different air-filled porosities (fa). A theoretical diffusion model indicated that diffusion alone was insufficient to account for the flux of oxygen required to meet measu…

Spontaneous respiration anesthesia for respiratory papillomatosis.

Several anesthetic techniques for microlaryngeal laser surgery in children have been advocated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the operative conditions and safety of the spontaneous respiration anesthesia technique for carbon dioxide laser surgery in children with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). The anesthetic and operative records of 60 pediatric patients with RRP who underwent microlaryngeal laser surgeries between 1991 and 1997 were reviewed. Papilloma location, severity of involvement, oxygen saturation, airway stability, need for intubation, duration of procedure,…

A confused man with rapid respiration.

A 71-year-old man presented with incoherent, slurred speech, auditory hallucinations, and tachypnea. According to the neighbor who called for emergency medical service, the man had appeared to be in good health the day before. On admission, his blood pressure was normal.

Effect of continuous swallowing on respiration.

We examined the effect of continuous swallowing on breathing pattern and ventilation in 7 adult subjects. Repetitive swallowing was induced by oral infusion of water at a variable rate of 40, 60, 80 or 100 ml/min, while the subject breathed through the nose. The number of swallows increased from a mean of 5.2 (+/- 2.7 SD) swallows/min during the control period to 9.2 +/- 2.0 to 13.7 +/- 2.9 swallows/min during infusion of 40 and 100 ml/min, respectively. The duration of interruption of breathing was bolus volume-dependent, increasing from 0.55 +/- 0.09 sec with a mean bolus volume of 4.6 +/- 1

Psychometric correlates of respiration: a review.

It appears that substantial differences exist in the ventilatory response of individuals to various stressors such as exercise and high levels of CO2 in the inspired air. Both these stresses are commonly experienced by workers in various settings, and both hyperventilation and hypoventilation are capable of provoking a chain of events that conceivably could have catastrophic results for the man or woman working in extreme environments. A portion of the exaggerated responsiveness of some individuals to exercise or CO2 is associated with psychopathology. Anxiety neurosis, or neurocirculatory aes

Cyanide-resistant respiration in Streptomyces citreofluorescens.

The capacity of Streptomycetes to carry out cyanide-resistant respiration was investigated. With the model strain, Streptomyces citreofluorescens, it was shown that deprivation of glucose followed by transition from exponential to stationary growth was coupled with declining sensitivity of cellular respiration to cyanide ions. Cyanide-resistant oxidase is located within the cytoplasmic membrane. The occurrence of the cyanide-resistant oxidase did not correspond to qualitative changes of cytochrome spectrum. Cytochrome d is involved neither in cyanide-sensitive nor in cyanide-resistant respirat…

Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea and periodic respiration.

Patterns of breathing at night were recorded in 4 patients with heart-failure. 2 had periodic breathing while awake and in 2 it developed after they fell asleep. In all 4 the phase of hyperventilation disturbed sleep. These cases also illustrate other problems caused by periodic respiration in heart-failure, which range from tiredness during the day to an inability to sleep for more than a few minutes. Nocturnal waking in the hyperventilation phase of Cheyne-Stokes breathing should be differentiated from paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea caused by episodes of pulmonary oedema at night.

Cyanide-resistant respiration in Neurospora crassa.

Cell respiration in wild type and poky was studied as part of a long-term investigation of cyanide-resistant respiration in Neurospora. Respiration in wild type proceeds via a cytochrome chain which is similar to that of higher organisms; it is sensitive to antimycin A or cyanide. Poky, on the other hand, respires by means of two alternative oxidase systems. One of these is analogous to the wild-type cytochrome chain in that it can be inhibited by antimycin A or cyanide; this system accounts for as much as 15% of the respiration of poky f(-) and 34% of the respiration of poky f(+). The second …
